Dec 24, 2018 - Dusseldorf

Monday 24th: This morning’s tour was a guided walk through the old town of Dusseldorf with a culinary twist at the end and a look at the Christmas markets. Our guide who lives in the old town was very bright and breezy and was able to impart a feel for the area. Much of the old town is filled with bars and restaurants and as it was Christmas eve they were gearing up for a big night. The guide stressed how loud and boisterous it can get in the evening and even as we left about lunchtime the streets had started to fill up and the beer was...

Where is Shirley?

May 6, 2015 - Trains, planes, and automobiles to...

Rheine, Germany! That is, the car taxi to the flight to Dusseldorf, the five trains to Rheine complicated by partial rail strike and the taxi to Briggie's house. Whew! After our joyous reunion and resting up, made a car rez on expedia in town so we can all move around…great price…but no mini van as advertised due to demand from aforementioned strike. This resulted in a multi lingual exchange worthy of Abbot and Costello in which, due to strength of the idea of my reservation, I think I am getting a vw toureg sitting right there but I wind...

Sep 26, 2013 - Long week!

Well its definitely been a long week at Oktoberfest. Day one we went to the English beer garden which is an outside beer garden next to a body of water where u can rent kayaks etc. Than we went to the Chinese tower show is also an outdoor beer garden. Its kind of crazy, everything is served in glass no matter where u go. A lot of places give charge u a deposit on your glass to make sure it gets returned. For the most part, there aren't bars to go up and get a drink. U have to be at a table for a waitress to serve u. Almost every day we have...

Europe Fall 2013

May 29, 2013 - Dusseldorf

May 29 2013 We biked about 1 mile today for a total of 323 miles. Woke up to rain, which persisted all day. It has become cool also. Back from the sunshine. We left Cologne on the train for an easy ride to Dusseldorf. After finding a Hotel - Hotel Bismarck - dropped off all our gear except bikes. This hotel is pretty interesting. the seems from another era, lots of pictures of Otto Von Bismarck. He unified Germany in the latter part of the 19th century. Went to the Hauptbahnhof and dropped bikes at the Radstation. We then, with umbrellas...

Jul 23, 2012 - Some observations...

We've just boarded our next river boat cruise (Saone and Rhone Rivers in France) and hoping for reliable WiFi for uploading photographs. I thought this might be an opportunity to share a few thoughts and observations... * I continue to feel so very very fortunate that we are able to make such a wonderful journey as this one! We have seen and done so many wonderful things; I mentally pinch myself to be sure it truly is us! (And it is interesting that everyone who hears about our big trip shakes his head and says he/she couldn't do it!) *...

Jul 4, 2012 - Back to Dusseldorf

We got up at 5:45 to eat breakfast and finish cleaning so we were ready to pull out at 8:00 for our last drive (40 miles). We returned to Mulheim and the rental place by 9:15. This time we had no damage to our rig and will get the full refund of 1200 euro deposit back! I must admit I am relieved to not have to drive again for quite a while. 9 weeks on European roads of all types and sizes was challenging at times. I am ready for a break! Taxis took us to a very nice hotel in Dusseldorf where I think all 14 of us hit the showers and many...

May 31, 2012 - to Dusseldorf, Germany

[Do you realize Ivan has prepared and we've entered over 1,100 photos so far?!?] Up about 7:30 to repack the items we've used while in the hotel. Went downstairs for another great breakfast; ate by ourselves as no other caravaners left. We put our box in a day pack and headed for the post office; were 2nd on line when it opened. We were not sure if it was too heavy but guess not. A bit pricey to mail at 36 euros but worth it to get rid of the weight and know that we'll have it when we get home. We took a taxi to the train station in plenty...

May 24, 2012 - The Trip

The Trip: I had the best check in ever! No line at the counter, no messing with eticket printouts-I only had to use my passport, and no line at security I went on Air Berlin using American Airlines Advantage miles and they had lots of availability! The airplane was an Airbus of some kind from LAX to Dusseldorf. It had no legroom but left at 6 pm so after the little dinner the timing was perfect to sleep, so no big deal, but I'm going to request an emergency exit row for the way back. I rode the SkyTrain at Dusseldorf International! I had a...

Mar 16, 2012 - Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf not a bad town to visit people are easy to get on with not as happy as THAIS büt they are easier to get through to most of them can speak English and even if they can´t they will try to help. Had a bit of trouble finding this hostel I think the Google directions I downloaded was wrong but it may have been my fault. Ride on tram ten stops was a bit hairy thought you would be able to buy a ticket on the tram but they have a machine on the tram which checks tickets. Still don`t know where you buy them. Had good night got settled at...

Europe BY RAIL 2012

Jul 11, 2011 - Dusseldorf - Our last night in Europe

With the van loaded, we headed up to Dusseldorf for our last night in Europe. We had a funky hotel booked and everyone slept well. In fact, the next morning Katie made my day by saying "Dad, thank you for giving us such neat experiences that I know not everyone is lucky enough to have." What a great kid. We got to the airport, returned the van, checked in, paid the extra for the windsurfer and enjoyed the flight home. Back in Toronto our visit through customs was painless, the rental SUV was big enough to take us and all the luggage, and...

Apr 15, 2011 - Dusseldorf Germany - First Stop on European Adventure

Guten Tag! We arrived April 14, 2011 in Germany at 7:30 AM local time. Our flight left the Miami airport at 4:20 PM the day before. Air Berlin does a nice job and it was a good flight. Upon arrival, we managed to get some Euros from the ATM and took a taxi to the RV rental place. We had a walkthrough of our new little home on wheels. We then bought some diesel and found our way to the REAL Hypercenter - which is sort of a German Walmart Supercenter. Bought some supplies for the RV - which took more time than expected, since there is very...
