Wednesday, August 16 Langst to Xanten 3 hrs 48 mins 70.8 kms One would think that the Langst campground would be noisy due to its proximity to the Duesseldorf airport. And it is until around 8 in the evening. Then it is quiet. Until 6 in the morning. Then the planes start coming and going every few minutes. In between it is quiet. The planes woke me, then put me back to sleep with their rhythm. I was hoping that the sun would come out and bake me in the tent. There was too much ground fog for that to happen. Thursday, August 3 Zutphen to Xantem 5 hrs 6 min 96.0 kms I am on my own today. Totally. I had hoped that Cor would lead me out of Zutphen and point me in the right direction. No; his back was getting worse and he was taking the drastic action of staying off his bicycle. It was 9:30 when I cycled in front of Cor’s home for some obligatory bon voyage photos. May 17, 2013 - Romans not in Rome!
It was still cold and grey but not wet so we headed first to the nearby small town of Kalkar. The market square was dominated by the 15th century brick Gothic Rathaus a very impressive building. We enjoyed a gentle wander through the streets and looked inside the St Nicolai Church. This church had an amazing collection of nine Gothic altars all carved in wood.
