Jun 21, 2012 - Bus to Kargil - adjust photos & chg captions

Wiki Info Kargil Wiki Info Dras - Coldest, See Photo Bhimbhut Stone - see fuzzy photo 6-21 Beautiful blue sky sunny day! By 8 am there was a long, long line of vehicles, mostly cargo trucks lined up in front of our hotel heading in both directions three across. They were waiting to start the trek up the mountain pass. However, it didn't really start to move until 11 at which time we were on the road waiting for our govt. bus to come by on its way to Kargil. It came and by noon we were moving down the road, there were 2 gals from TX on the...

Oct 4, 2009 - Leh to Srinigar

Leh to Srinigar in a shared minivan. Left 4:30 p.m., drove through the night, arrived 10:30 a.m. the next morning. I'm in the middle row, crammed in with two Indian guys. For 18 hours. I expressed my displeasure at being sandwiched with no room to move; the two Indian guys did not seem too happy that I was complaining (to them this was probably luxury); I summarised by position, describing them as something beginning with f and ending "ers", and that was the last communication we had for 18 hours. Suited me fine. Bumpy, dusty road, psycho...

Jul 18, 2009 - En Route to Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley - Leh to Kargil

We left Leh at around 7:15 this morning to begin our 430-something kilometer trip to Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. Rather than take one of the many shared jeeps and buses available for the long drive, as there were a number of sights we wished to take in en route to Srinagar, we chartered our own jeep and driver for the 2 day trip. Our first stop was at the ruins of the monastery at Basgo. This UN World Heritage sight today lays in large part in ruins, as the restoration process of the centuries old monastery at Basgo is far from...

Break From the Law

Aug 6, 2007 - Ley to Kargil - the horror of the mud!

What a special birthday treat! Left Ley at 8am in light rain until morning chai break, then much heavier rain to lunch at the 1000-year old monastery of Lamayuru. After lunch, what used to be a good sealed highway was covered in deep slippery mud all the way to Kargil. The worst ride of the trip so far: cold and wet (hadn't packed enough warm/waterproof clothing on the bike) for 12 hours on the road, at least 10 hours riding to cover 220km. Got in some slippery stuff trying to pass a van and ended up with the bike parked vertically up a...
