Oct 18, 2006 - Mumbai (Bombay)

We have arrived into Mumbai and at least a city that resembles something of a modern city. Its a lot more Westernised here and theres highrises around and some kind of order in the driving. We jumped on a train at Udipar in Rajastan at 8pm and arrived into Mumbai at 5pm the next day....for the mathematically minded, that is a whopping 21hours straight on a train...lucky we could afford Air Con and a proper seat because I had seen the conditions where the natives(!!) travel and 21 hours in that carriage would have been absolute hell on...

Oct 12, 2006 - Like London...On acid!!

Hi people, Well we're here - we made it to the madness that is Mumbai...And it's like being in London on acid! Why? Well there's just as many people but they stare at you wide-eyed. There's as much traffic but as well as cars there's tuk-tuks, scooters galore and the odd ox pulling fuel tanks in rush hour as though it was the most natural thing in the world! We even saw one today trying to parallel park with a huge cart on the back (picture to come) We're staying in the Fort area and must have the only quiet (if not silent) room in Mumbai....

Oct 6, 2006 - Laenge leve aircondition! (Mumbai)

Oct 3, 2006 - Bombay

Arrived in Bombay at 4:30am today, went thru immigration, grabbed my bags, went thru customs, changed some money at the foreign exchange counter and found the pre-paid taxi counter. Got a taxi to Colaba which is the area where most travels stay in southern Bombay. It was a dark, humid morning, people slept everywhere they could and the taxi drive brought me thru some scary areas. Found Hotel Volga and the BOX I am staying in, it doesn't even have a window and this place was in the Lonely Planet! Anyway it's only for a few days and...

My World Odyssey

Aug 24, 2006 - Mumbai o Bombay

Hola a tots! Ahir a la tarde vam arribar a Bombay i avui estem voltant per la ciutat.Aquesta ciutat es enorme (mes de 15 milions) pero no es tant caotica com altres ciutats de l'India.Als llocs on hem estat el trafic esta prou be i els carrers tambe.

Jul 11, 2006 - Mumbai, bombings

I thought it would be appropriate to make a post, as I'm sure you've heard about the bombings that happened a few hours ago in Mumbai. I'm fine. We're not allowed to leave the hostel though, so luckily it has one computer with internet! All of the phone lines are also completely tied up. It's rather freaky though because I rode the same train line today for two hours and the bombings happened just an hour after I was on the train. I can't really write very much as others would like to use the computer. Apparently Bangalore and Kolkata are...

Jun 30, 2006 - Mumbai

India was just how I imagined it to be from the moment of touching down in Mumbai....Everyone was out their seats before the plane even stopped and then I was sent to the back of the Passport Control queue for doing something wrong with my immigration form! Although I knew through finding out the expensive way in Bangkok, that it is cheaper to get a meter taxi than a pre-pay, I just wanted an easy trip into town, so enquired at the first pre-pay counter. They were quoting double what the hotel had informed me to be a fixed price so I moved...

Jun 8, 2006 - Becomig a Bollywood movie star

So I arrived in Mumbai and was immediately hit by the heat, smells and poverty of India. The culture shock of arriving in India from China was probably even greater than if I had come here directly from the UK. I am staying in a non-tourist area of Mumbai (I haven't seen any other Westerners around the area) and after China where I found myself the centre of attention I was did I find myself besieged by touts, street-hawkers and beggars. The only problem with the area I'm staying in is the lack of bars, so to get a beer I headed to a pub...

May 29, 2006 - Coming to a cinema nowhere near you...

We're in a Bollywood movie!! The guy at our hotel just asked us if we wanted to be in a Bollywood movie and that his friend was looking for white extras. Naturally we accepted and got picked up from our hotel and dropped off 'en location'. The film is called 'Dhamaal' (Look out for it on Amazon or something). 'Dhamaal' means either mischief or excitement or fun (Depending on who you ask) and it was certainly all of those! The one scene we are in, it has to be said, is an awful, awful scene. Our acting is TERRIBLE, the lines are abismal and...

May 4, 2006 - Mumbai - Arrived Safely

HB I wasn't looking forward to flying long-haul in cattle class but we passed the 8 hour flight in relative comfort mainly due to the fact that the flight was empty and we could stretch out in a row a piece. The absence of tourists or nationals travelling home resulted in us wondering whether we had made an error in deciding to spend our first couple of months travelling around India in the hottest season right before the monsoon. Any doubts we had were magnified as we stepped out of the plane into a wall of heat, but we managed to navigate...

Apr 30, 2006 - Mumbai

We reached Mumbai in the afternoon, and had 1.5 days to soak up everything we could about the city. We were taken by surprise here; we expected Mumbai to be very much like Delhi but instead found big wide roads (no cows), less beggars, high rise buildings, shopping malls... the works! They've even gone a step further in using natural gas in public transport, which almost eliminated pollution in the city. We shopped, we watched a Bollywood movie at the cinema, and made friends with a nice taxi driver who drove us through most of the city...

Apr 28, 2006 - Street school for urchins and Dhobi Ghat

Before I forget, Torger and I did a back to back measure off in Sydney to determine who was tallest. The result was that somewhere in the South Pacific he passed me by. He obviously felt very good about it and he's been teasing me ever since. Back to the present... It was an early morning before we finally got situated in our hotel and off to bed. The kids finally got to bed at 1:00 am and Molly and I at 2:00, but it was four hours later in Sydney so we were all very tired. After an abbreviated sleep, we got up at 8:30 to have a buffet...
