Apr 6, 2014 - Mumbai

Mumbai is like another world! Mumbai is a conglomerationof 7 islands that were home to fishing communities “in good old times”. The islands were gifted to Charles II on his wedding to the daughter of the King of Portugal. Many years later the wonderful colonial buildings are evidence of Britain’s role in making Mumbai (Bombay) an important trading centre. Later it became a centre for the Independence movement. There is a huge diversity between the very rich and the very poor here and of course there is Bollywood. Our major destination today...

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Whenever we visit Mumbai it always comes to mind that this was the first city I ever visited in India. We flew into Bombay in late June 1974 in order to prepare for our wedding on July 4th in Patna. For that reason, I always think of the city and our family members there in a very special way. This visit was a great as all the other visits we’ve made. Anil’s cousin, Dr. R. K. Kapoor and his wife Kusum have always lived with a view of the ocean, and the sea breezes are very much appreciated after touring inland...

Oct 29, 2013 - Hyderabad

So it was up and back to the Mumbai airport -- Domestic Airport for our journey to Hyderabad. The international and domestic terminals are miles apart -- in actuality 2 separate airports. I arrive wondering if my friends will be there. They stayed the Hilton the night before. I make it through checkin - no issues ( a bit stressed when i had to check my bag -- but C'est La Vie) Security is a bit different, segregated lines for Men and Women. The women have private screening. While I wait for my friends i notice there are no announcements...

Oct 28, 2013 - Mumbai Downtown

At last no stress -- the return of my luggage destressed me immensely but I still keep my massage appointment for today ;) Since i had to rearrange the entire plans and skip Jaipur (which had me really bummed out), I decided to go downtown. The hotel was out by the airport - so I needed the driver. I hired him for 2 hours (at $30 wow!). So we drove downtown --- well what a mess. They have lanes here -- but its really just mocking you as driver-- NO one pays attention to the lanes ---- and NO one pays attention to which side of the road you...

Oct 26, 2013 - ITC Maratha Hotel

Those of you who know Joe and I know we are point collectors -- so at Starwoods I am platinum level and looking to move to Super Platinum then back to Ambassador Status. I will make it this year! So all our travels we stay in the Starwood family of hotels. I arrive at the hotel after a taxi cab ride right out of the movies --- yes it might be a stereo type but it held true when I arrived, it was bedlam on the road. I will NOT be driving here ;) I arrive at the hotel and its stunning! There are Sikh doormen in full bell man uniform the...

Sep 22, 2013 - 16 September - Mumbai

It was an 8.5 hour (400km) drive over some very bad roads, and also some motorway, to get to Mumbai. We stopped about 50km away to get some snacks to tide us over till our late lunch, and it took us another 3 hours from there to get to our hotel! The traffic was so clogged up, with no-one giving way to anyone else and trying to squeeze their vehicle into any tiny space in order to move a couple of metres forward. They didn't even give way to ambulances! We finally arrived at our hotel at around 3pm and got settled in. After lunch we had a...

Apr 23, 2013 - Mumbai, India

Our final port of call on the beautiful Regent Seven Seas Voyager is India’s city of Mumbai. It has been a great 68 days visiting many diverse countries and cultures ranging from the opulence of Hong Kong and Shanghai to the poverty of Cambodia and rural India. It seems appropriate that our last stop further emphasizes this diverse theme. Mumbai is one of the most populous cities in the world with 21 million and is home to the Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange of India, Reserve Bank of India and corporate headquarters almost...

Apr 18, 2013 - Mumbai - (Bombay) here we come

Flight on Indigo was good - A3480 airbus. Airports tidy and well organized. Excellent airport security checks. Taxi at Mumbai chucked our bags on top on a rack (not tied down) Eeeeks! – a sinking feeling on the drive to our accomm. Shanty towns (slums) everywhere and a feeling of squalor. Our room – clean but extra basic. Does have a/c and ensuite AND WI FI. In the ‘burbs away from the Tourist area but still plenty of little shops and market stalls. A walk through the streets and a Baskins & Robins icrecream calmed the senses enough to...

Jan 18, 2013 - Mumbai a.k.a. Bombay Jan 13th to Jan 15th

Happily an uneventful trip business class in a A330 and B747, not too painful. Exhausted and vegged out all of Sunday Jan 12th. Met up with several other Directors and called it a day. Glenn had been trying to shake a seemly unidentified mysterious cold or virus which had kept him below his normal 113% operating mode for a month and pretty badly since the New Year, a consequence of which delayed our departure for 2 days. Today is Jan 19th and it is the first day that things seem to be right again. Whilst I had to work, Sylvia and Barbara...
