Nov 25, 2018 - The Pink City

Day 11: Jaipur The Pink City I know what you’re thinking. But no. Jaipur is not known as the Pink City because a boatload of gay men and 2 lesbians visited there. The real story is that it’s due to the pinkish color of the stone used in construction of all buildings. That plus the fact that the Maharaja in 1876 decided to paint the whole town pink to welcome Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales on their first tour there. Since then it’s become the law; no matter how many queens come over. The city’s “must see” sight is Amber Fort....

Reaching Jaisalmer I boarded the Bandra Terminus Jaisalmer Express (22931), which halts at Ahmedabad. It departed at 10.30 pm and reached Jaisalmer at 12.50 pm the next day. Nov 5, 2017 - Bikaner

Sunday 5th November 2017 Bikaner and Karni Mata Temple (Rat Temple) Today we had breakfast and were met by our guide at the hotel at 9:00am. We drove 32 kms to the Karni Mata Temple (Rat Temple) at Deshnok. The visit to this temple was the reason for this trip. Lynn has always wanted to visit there since she saw it on an episode of The Amazing Race. We took our shoes off (as you always have to) and entered the temple with many others who come to worship and also to see the rats that inhabit this temple. They are holy and there are thousands...

Nov 4, 2017 - Jaisalmer to Bikaner

Saturday 4th November 2017 Jaisalmer to Bikaner Up on the roof again for breakfast for another beautiful view of Jaisalmer Fort on a lovely morning. Lynn saved her toast for the mother dog we had seen from the roof, she has 10 very lively puppies. The dog was happy to receive the toast and quickly ate it. The hotel manager told her that they feed the dog and give the puppies milk, but we wondered what would become of them – so many dogs on the streets of India. The manager of the hotel gave us a present of 2 very beautiful cushion covers...

Nov 3, 2017 - Jodhpur to Jaisalmer

Thursday 2nd November 2017 Udaipur to Jaisalmer via Jodhpur Up very early this morning (5:30am) for a 6:15am pick up at the hotel. When we went downstairs the staff were asleep on the floor and on the lounge in reception and there was no sign of our promised tuk tuk, so Lynn went to find one for our trip down to where our driver would be waiting at 6:30am. Meanwhile David hailed one down, so when Lynn came back with another one, we had to give one some money to not take us. Although our guide had given the hotel instructions about the tuk...

Nov 1, 2017 - Delhi to Udaipur

Tuesday 31st October 2017 Delhi to Udaipur Today marks the start of our new trip in Rajasthan. We farewelled our fellow travellers from our bus trip this morning and last evening. We met a representative, Vikas, from our new agency in the hotel reception this morning. He accompanied us to the airport in a taxi through the morning traffic. As we have 2 internal flights with smaller luggage allowances we have ‘decanted’ quite a few belongings into a separate bag and Vikas planned to take it to our final hotel in Delhi for them to store until...

Oct 29, 2017 - Pushkar to Mandawa

Sunday 29th October 2017 Pushkar to Mandawa After breakfast today, we joined one other couple and went back on the bus to the camel fair. It was quiet in the arena as nothing had yet started unlike yesterday when there was a great deal of action. We strolled around and looked at horses and camels for nearly an hour then back on the bus to the hotel, had lunch in our room then checked out of the hotel, waited downstairs and left Pushkar at around 1:00pm for the long drive to Mandawa, arriving at the hotel there at about 7:30pm. Dinner was...

Oct 28, 2017 - Jodhpur to Pushkar

Friday 27th October 2017 Jodhpur to Pushkar Up early today and left the hotel at around 8:30am to drive to Pushkar. Arrived at about 1:00pm. The city was bustling because the Pushkar Camel Fair was just starting tomorrow. Lunch in the hotel, and in this town there is no meat, eggs or alcohol, so it was a total vegetarian meal. At 4:00pm we went with the group for a walk from the hotel into the town about a kilometre away. We visited the Pushkar Lake where Hindus come to pray and bathe at one of the 54 ghats and have ceremonies, then we...

Oct 26, 2017 - Jaipur to Jodhpur

Wednesday 25th October 2017 Jaipur to Jodhpur Up early today for the long drive from Jaipur to Jodhpur through the dry and dusty countryside. No sightseeing en route today but lots of countryside and the occasional village to view. Left at 7:00am and arrived at the hotel in Jodhpur at 2:00pm, checked in and free time for the rest of the day. Lovely grassy gardens and a slightly cloudy swimming pool at this hotel that used to be a mansion used for polo players. Spent the afternoon relaxing in the room and dinner in the hotel at night. Today...

Oct 24, 2017 - Bharatpur to Jaipur

Monday 23rd October 2017 Bharatpur to Jaipur Today we left our hotel in Bharatpur just after 9am and drove about two hours to Abhaneri where we visited the Chand Baori step well, supposedly the deepest step well in the world. It was constructed in the 9th Century and is about 100 feet deep and has a total of 3,500 steps over 13 levels. This place was totally amazing and could still be used as a well after it fills in the monsoon season. There was nearby a Hindu Temple (Harshat Mata) from which, over the centuries, the nearby villagers took...

Oct 22, 2017 - Agra to Bharatpur

Sunday 22nd October 2017 Agra to Bharatpur Today we had breakfast in the hotel and left around 9:30am to visit Fatehpur Sikri (City of Victory) where the Mughal Shah had his capital for 10 years, then due to lack of sufficient water, the capital moved back to Agra. It was quite frantic when we arrived with hawkers and other local people out in droves as it was a holiday Sunday. The city itself is a World Heritage site and is absolutely beautiful with many carved stone walls in a rusty red colour and set at the top of the hill overlooking...
