Dec 18, 2016 - Sumo to New Jalpaiguri

12/18 We head to sumo/taxi stand after checking out of Hotel Broadway. It's getting colder (relatively speaking) so good to move on - down...soon to be hot and humid again, ha! We humans are so little adapted to multiple climates, reptiles seem to have an answer, maybe! But we are not related by evolution so I guess our fate is in the hands of M.N. Arrived after a thrilling downhill ride at train depot from whence we left ...2:30p.m. asked at the tourist help place for hotels nearby! A very friendly fellow pointed and said "Just 2 km that...

India One More Time

Nov 13, 2013 - Purnia to Siliguri

November 14, 2013 First chai break. I didn’t leave until 10:30am. I just about stayed the day add read. The hotel, abet a shit hole, was away from town thus no ‘traffic’ and it had a good restaurant. I found that I learned a lot by following a bus earlier. When to honk, when not to plus everyone hears a bus horn and can see it’s size thus following it I am almost guaranteed to have a clear roadway. I should be in West Bengal and Darjeeling by nightfall. There is an albino working at the shop next to the chai stall. They are calling him a...

Aug 18, 2012 - Siliguri

8-18 Bon was able to connect Skype to talk to Tiff before leaving. Taxi to shared jeep station and got one with front seats for us although we have to wait an hour for it to fill. Road to Siliguri has lots of repairs being done where it looks like there have been landslides. We pass by at least 3 large dam projects, all about half finished. Skies are blue at first but just as we are getting down to more hot/humid elevations it clouds over and surprisingly cooler temps. Siliguri is just a big city but everything we need is on the main Hill...

Dec 2, 2009 - Jakarta to KL to Calcutta to Siliguri to Darjeeling

In my year off I've come to realize that more ofteh than not I enjoy the journey more than the destination. Arrival at my location is often an anti-climax. (I wonder if I have the same issues with relationships?). The attached photos show one of my more memorable journeys - for its length, variety and places visited en route. In one non-stop journey spanning two days I undertook the following. Why? I wanted to visit Darjeeling to see the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and stay in a Raj era hotel - I got sidetracked from Nepal to Tibet...

Asia Journey

Dec 24, 2008 - Back to Siliguri and warmth!

HIGHLIGHTS • A jeep back to Siliguri DETAIL It’s a beautiful day and I have porridge on the rooftop admiring the Himalaya’s in the glorious sunshine. I chat with the owner and found out that Gorkaland doesn’t want to separate from India but wants an independent state. It was a good chat and I learnt a lot. But its time to leave Darjeeling even though it’s beautiful I’m so frickin’ cold. So down I walk to the jeep stand back to Siliguri and load my backpack on the roof and start chatting away with one of the passengers. He is a Christian and...

Dec 21, 2008 - Foot of the Himalaya's

HIGHLIGHTS • Off to New Jalpaiguri and the Himalaya’s DETAIL I sit and ponder my navel working out alternative routes north. Either train to Calcutta and then north to New Jalpaiguri or by plane. I don’t want to do either. I was wait-listed number 13, then 10 but finally I am confirmed. So it’s a direct train all the way from Puri to New Jalpaigui, a twenty-two hour train ride. I wander to the Pink House restaurant where I was last night and say goodbye to Christoff, sitting and chatting away with Jodie. Both are lost but Christoff is an...

Aug 18, 2008 - Siliguri

Siliguri is another chaotic dirty Indian town with nothing to recommend it and for most its a transit point on the way to Darjeeling or Bangladesh. My time here was all about catching up on some necessary internet chores and happily eating my way through the menu at the surprisingly good Sanjat restaurant.

Where's Malcolm?

Nov 14, 2004 - Sick

Hi, I have been out of touch for a while because I have been really sick with something, not sure what. I am all better now, though. I either had food poisioning (my preferred diagnosis) or dysentery (doctor's diagnosis). On the 12th at around 8 PM I got really nauseous, and ended up sick all night... no need to go into the distgusting details. But about every 30 minutes or so I was in the bathroom. The food at the guest house isn't too fresh, and at lunch I felt ill and then at dinner even worse, so I think it might have been the food. The...

Field Work 2004

Nov 5, 2004 - University of North Bengal

Hello, I am here in North Bengal. It's at the borders of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. It's really nice here. The plane flight was good, and when I arrived Dr. Das' graduate students picked me up at the airport. That was nice! They are all very, very nice. Dr. Das is super friendly and really kind. He sat down with me yesterday and we set out a tentative itinerary for India. He asked a former student to try and locate P. geminiflora for us in Darjeeling, and we are going on Sunday and Monday. Then Tuesday back, then 10-11 to Sikkim to use...
