Jan 5, 2007 - Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island is part of West Bali National Park. There are no habitants on the island, only visitors - mostly divers stopping for lunch. Great spot except for the trash which, according to H, is blamed on the Javanese by the Balinese and vice versa.

Jun 28, 2006 - Diving!

We both woke up around 6:00 and tried to go back to sleep, but the roosters were crowing and the wind was rustling the trees. It sounds a lot like rain when the wind blows through the long, thin leaves of the tropical trees and they rub together, so we were fearing our dives would be cancelled. Then the sun came up. It didn't meander up into the sky as it does back home - it just popped into the sky and it was light. So we got up and headed to the restaurant for breakfast. We both ordered the same food as the previous day, had several...

Jun 27, 2006 - First full day on Bali

Our first full day on Bali. Woke up early since Bali is 12 hours off of US East Coast and our body clocks were trying to tell us it was 6 PM. We puttered a bit, then went for breakfast at the restaurant. I had reviewed the Mimpi map that was in the room, so I thought I knew how to get to the restaurant, but when we got there it was empty. So we wandered over to the other restaurant, and that was where we had breakfast. We had ordered our breakfast and were chatting when Bob The Academic came over and introduced himself. He asked if we were...

Jun 26, 2006 - Denpasar to Mimpi Menjangan

The first thing that struck me while we were driving through Denpasar was the number of motorcycles and scooters. When the car and truck traffic was slow, the motorcycles were passing us on both sides, but since many of them had three people or a person or two and some sort of cargo, they didn't actually go very fast, and when the four-wheel traffic started to move we had to pass the motorcycles. It appeared to be Good Form for the car drivers to toot their horns when they were about to pass the motorcycles. Not so much the question, "May I...

Oct 1, 2003 - Indonesia - Bali - 4 Temples and A Ceremony

There are approximately 100,000 Hindu temples in Bali. I had not yet experienced one. We were about to change that. Quite unknowingly, we picked a great day to visit temples as it was Full Moon, and special ceremonies were taking place at the temples. I don't know the significance of Full Moon to Balinese Hindus, but from the size and elaborateness of the ceremonies we attended, it's apparently a big deal! ******** After our week in Java, we arrived in Bali feeling overjoyed to be back in civilization. We spent 3 days in Kuta making plans...
