Jun 5, 2016 - Amalfi Coast

Our Amalfi coast tour was an 8 passenger Mercedes van... very comfortable! (more on that later) Yesterday's 6 companions were from New York, Montreal and Boston. Our guide, Carmoni, was very fluent (perhaps just a bit too fluent)...But was nevertheless a competent courteous driver. These are no small attributes when driving this incredibly narrow, winding, twisting and steeply inclined piece of marvellous Italiano 19th century engineering We left the port city of Salerno at 8 am heading north on the Autostrada A3 toward Naples, south of...

Jun 4, 2015 - Praino

This is going to be a short one today, because we decided to do absolutely nothing. We thought about going to Ravello as recommended by our friends, but couldn't get excited about the cost, time and effort. So we just sat on the terrace and read the entire day. I took some pictures of the hotel just so you wouldn't be completely bored. As I said, this hotel is not for the elderly or handicapped, even with an elevator. We have been walking up and down hills and climbing steps our entire stay. Land is vertical here, not horizontal! It's...

Jun 3, 2015 - Praiano & Amalfi

We have been so lucky with the weather! A few times it clouded up and threatened to rain, but after a few drops, it cleared and was beautiful again. The temperature has been consistently in the 70's - perfect. This morning after breakfast, I went to read and Norm rented a kayak for an hour and paddled around. He is enjoying the water, taking several dips a day, which means it's way too cold for me. In the afternoon, we took a cab to Amalfi, a small town east of here. Other than the public bus, which is unreliable, transportation is VERY...

Jun 2, 2015 - Praiano, Amalfi Coast

We are actually in Praiano, not Positano, which is the next town up the coast. We spent the day mostly reading because today is a holiday and impossible to get anywhere on the mini-roads of the Italian coast. But we needed a rest so we read and Norm and I went to the beach so he could take a dip in the water. Since we are on a cliff everything is a hike, even to our room, which is up a hill and a flight of stairs. The beach is about 300 feet below us down many stairs or a switchback path. Then you have to come back up! Norm spent about 5...

Jun 1, 2015 - The Amalfi Coast

Caught the train just in time - everything in Italy is 5 minutes away - even though we left a 1/2 hour before our departure. We have gotten that advice so many times - 5 minutes by cab, 15 minute walk. It always turns out to be at least a 15 minute cab ride! Anyway, the train was lovely even though we didn't realize we had assigned seats until some nice people told us we were sitting in their seats. The train was fast, about 180 mph, but stopped a lot, so it took 4 1/2 hours to get to Naples from Milan. We were met by a driver to drive us...

Jun 1, 2015 - Day 7 Positano

Day 7 I woke early with a cough. The congestion wasn't bad but the cough was! It was about 5 am and I could see the first Amy's of daylight, so I jumped out of bed, grabbed the camera and sat on the balcony, capturing night turning into day at Positano. I got a bit cold at 7 so crawled back into bed, but my cough started again, so I had a bath instead. Cerys woke about 30 minutes later, and we got ready for breakfast. Breakfast was a treat, with tony, dye effervescent dining room host making a huge fuss of Cerys! He picked out her food, has...

May 31, 2015 - Day 6 -Positano

Day 6 Dinner last night was really quite nice. A thick steak , cooked medium rare, but served slicesd with a hot stone to continue cooking at at the table, which we did. Novel, and beautifully tasting. After dinner, we strolled across to the lookout, and took pictures of the sunset, before strolling back to the hotel, and bed. Woke up early and down to breakfast. Breakfast was novel in that we actually had cooked food today, some sausage bites, and scrambled eggs. After breakfast, back to the leather shop for Cerys new jacket, all done and...

May 5, 2015 - Positano, Amalfi and Ravello

The boys turned up for brekky as if nothing happened. And maybe for them that's how it was. I wonder if they nick off to get away from the group and I'm collateral damage. Regardless they are totally oblivious. So maybe I have to find a way to tell them. The driver showed up on time in a blue Mercedes. We headed off after the others in our group had gone in their mini buses but ended up crashing into them at Positano anyway. The police keep vehicles moving the whole time so the drivers drop the passengers and come back and get them at he...

Oct 9, 2014 - Amalfi Coast Tour

Our drivers name was Peter and he was fabulous! He gave us lots of information along the way and he made lots stops at different places for us. He knew everyone and I'm thinking he gets a kickback because every time he stopped at a place to buy something...well, we did. Jason even bought olive oil LOL! And I was just walking up the stairs from a viewpoint and this guy asked if I speak English, I say yes and he hands me a book about Positano. I see that's its 20.00€ and I think, hmmm I didn't want to buy a book but ok, I'll support the...

Oct 9, 2014 - Amalfi and the Emerald Grotto

Peter also suggested that we do the Emerald Grotto tour...so we did. He said you see one...you see them all...so no need to see the Blue Grotto. There was one small part of the grotto that was beautiful but the boat rower guy was a duffus. It was only 5.00€ so it was worth it. We went into Amalfi and goofed around for awhile and then Peter dropped us off at a restrauant where we had a fantastic lunch. There are four brothers that run it and they are 3rd generation. Really nice experience. We really enjoyed this private tour and after our...

Jun 9, 2014 - Positano

Caught 8.40a.m ferry from Salerno to Positano via Amalfi. Thought it would be good idea to get the earliest departure to beat the crowds. Wrong! 2 Ferries both full. Perfect day for sailing up the Amalfi coast. Cheating to a crew member ,with my very limited Italian, on the way who played classical guitar, really interesting- he was really interested to see photos from Benabbio. First stop at Amalfi, where the bulk of the passengers disembarked. The scenic beauty of the Amalfi coastline got better as we neared Positano. Wow! What a place....
