Oct 26, 2018 - Trieste, Italy

Trieste is city and a seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. It is also located near Croatia some 19 miles further south. It is also 30 miles east of Venice, our next stop. Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy, belonging to it from 1382 until after World War I in 1918. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Trieste underwent an...

Sep 15, 2018 - A Day Trip to Trieste

So close to Italy, why not take a day trip? It was unanimous. The map software said about 2 hours. No problem, should be easy. No way. Traffic at the border at Slovenia was so slow. (My kids, remember the Tijuana border crossing? Not that long, but close.) But we did get a new stamp in our passports. A three lane highway went down to one lane in a short distance. It was Saturday morning and it appeared a lot of people were doing some weekend traveling. We did a lot of hypothesizing about what the issue might be, but none of our guesses were...

Aug 19, 2018 - more lagoons - photo's added

Thursday 9 – Saturday 11 August Time to leave the Venice lagoon. Had a long motor sail to the Marano & Grado lagoons and anchored not far from Lignano Sabbidoro. What’s proved very help when navigating the canals/channels is that we can emulate the laptops desktop on the iPad and have the iPad in the cockpit. Saturday 11 – Monday 13 August Mid afternoon left the anchorage and headed for Grado and anchored in the channel not far from the town. On the way into the entrance we noticed a (German flagged) racing boat trying to flag anyone down...

Jun 6, 2017 - Trieste, Italy

The morning starts off with some work on my blog while waiting for breakfast, a couple nice morning pictures looking out of my balcony, saw a hot air balloon rising near the castle. Down to lobby for breakfast and the back to pack my bags and head off to Trieste Italy this is the northeast side of the country, the area around it is very hilly and the streets very narrow wow a real trip driving there. Checked out the castle and a few places in old town then out for some dinner before calling it a night. Tomorrow it is back to Split for the...

Apr 14, 2016 - Bus to Trieste

4/14 Raining, luckily it left off while we walked to bus station. But by the time the bus arrived at 7:45 it was pouring! Just an hour to Trieste.... Beautiful green pastures, more reminders of Wisconsin - dairy cows, bales of hay (rolls of plastic). Quite hilly, probably foothills since rain doesn't allow much visibility. Once we arrived - exactly at 8:45 a.m. as promised - the view was of a port city, typical shipping port (see photo). Also, the rain and colder weather was off putting. We discussed a plan and decided to go on to Venice....

Aug 20, 2015 - Gornja Kosana and finally Trieste!

Day 23 Gornja Košana, Slovenia – Ocizla, Slovenia 29 but I walked 20 kms The day dawned with thunder. Lightning and rain! Great! A small group set out early but most hitched a ride to the Skocjan Caves! Jeanette, my sister had told me not to miss them if I got a chance to go there. So it was wonderful when I found the walk went right past them. Unbelievable caves! Like the Grand Canyon. The cave tour covered several kilometres and that is only a small section of the cave! Six of us did this then set out to walk the rest of the way. The...

Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday Jerry & Jared! This will be our last update from Trieste. We will be taking the train to Treviso, Italy in the morning, then we take a flight to Frankfurt the next morning. We will be in Germany for the next two months. We have really enjoyed our time in Trieste. There is a lot to see and do in this huge city. We saw a lot but we still have things to do for the next return visit. I am adding a few pictures that didn’t make the other updates. I am not sure how great the Wi-Fi will be in the next two...

May 1, 2015 - Victory Lighthouse & More

We have noticed some beautiful lighthouses in this area. One very special one is the Victory or Vittoria Lighthouse. It shines down on the Gulf of Trieste and is one of the tallest in the world. If you love lighthouses, don't miss this one. It is well worth the trip to visit the site of the lighthouse where you can take some magnificent pictures of the Gulf and city below. I was also able to spot the beautiful castle in the distance. The Vittoria Light (or Victory Lighthouse), sits on Gretta Hill and sends its beam down towards Trieste...

Apr 26, 2015 - Trieste Grand Canal

We are really enjoying our time in the beautiful city of Trieste. Today we visited the Trieste Grand Canal. Yes, just like Venice, Trieste has it’s own canal. The Trieste Canal Grand is a navigable canal situated in the city center, midway between the railway station and Piazza Unità d'Italia. The Canal is the prized jewel in the center of Trieste and is lined with beautiful buildings and outdoor cafes which lead up to the amazing sight of Saint Antonio Church, the largest in Trieste. If in Trieste, you are sure to end up here and it is a...

Apr 11, 2015 - Trieste Apartment

We moved into our beautiful apartment this morning. We love it! The owner does not speak a bit of English, but we managed to use a translator to figure out everything she was telling us. :-) We are very pleased and can't wait to get unpacked and all settled in. Marico went all out stocking the apartment for us. We have milk, cereal, orange juice, coffee, pasta, olive oil, herbs, sugar, a huge bowl of fruit, butter and bread, luncheon meats and more. We could eat for a week on just what she left for us. :-) We are very happy to be here and...

Apr 10, 2015 - Trieste, Italy

Our ship arrived in Trieste early this morning. This is a new port for Costa, they were welcomed with quite a show of water. Jerry and I watched it all from the balcony. We also enjoyed seeing all the boating and fishing action going on outside our window. The water was also loaded with jelly fish. We had a great view of the huge square right across the street too. We could hardly wait until noon for our appointment to get the keys to our apartment for the next month. I was so excited, I totally forgot to take pictures of the apartment. We...

Dec 24, 2013 - Castello di Miramare and Trieste

Part of our Italy tour was visiting the Castello di Miramare- a "dream castle" which means it was built for beauty and not as a fortress or for fighting. The man (Maximilian) who lived in the castle with his wife (Charlotte of Belgium). Max's brother was the emperor Austria and granted Maximilian with the duty of becoming Mexico's Emperor of Mexico in 1863. Due to the amount of destruction in Mexico he was unable to bring the country to peace and was shot and killed in 1867 in Mexico. The table where he agreed to become the emperor is still...
