Jul 24, 2018 - Day 9 Lago Maggiore

The Grand Hotel Dino was where we stayed for 2 nights. It was beautiful. It was situated on Lago Maggiore. The view from our room was spectacular. In the afternoon, we had short cruise to an island called Isola Bella. There’s a 14th century palace owned by the Borromeo Family. They were a wealthy bankers during the Renaissance. The family still owns the palace. We wandered around the massive italian gardens.

Jul 9, 2018 - Lake Como

I thought I was in love with Venice!! Omg Lake Como is stunning in every way!!! I haven’t had coffee with George Cluney yet!! But he’s probably busy𤘈𯘍 besides that, the atmosphere is magic. So relaxing, walking the lake is exilerating, most days we walk around 10km ++ and the scenery is breathtaking, we also did a walk similar to lofty but not as long, so we had amazing Veiws from above, fantastic!! I could definitely live here. Relaxed the last few nights eating in the square overlooking the cathedral (Domo) with caprese salad,...

Jun 18, 2015 - Day 24 Milan - lake Como

Day 24 Thursday 18 June 2015 Up and at 'em at 7.30 this morning, wash and dressed then downstairs for breakfast! What an expansive breakfast...counters and counters of cooked food, uncooked food, cereals, breads, pastries, juices, coffees etc. had a wonderful brekky before collecting the car and heading out towards lake Como. The drive was good...only two tolls today...gee they are fun but they take too many words to explain so let me do that in person! The drive was good...the gps only sent me the wrong way down a one way street once,...

May 29, 2015 - Around Lake Como

Today we took the ferry to Bellagio and Varenna, two beautiful towns on the lake. Bellagio is probably most famous for the estate owned by the Rockefeller Foundation where they host conferences and retreats. It is closed to the public, but they give tours of the gardens twice-a-day, which of course we missed. So I got a picture of the side of the estate, which will have to do. We took a little train around Bellagio and saw beautiful views as well as some beautiful estates. Since the lake is surrounded by mountains, the towns are all built...

May 28, 2015 - Lake Como

I slept in this morning and almost missed breakfast! They lower shutters over the windows so it's pitch dark and I had no idea what time it was. Norm had gotten up, worked out and showered. Finally, fearing I might have passed away in the night, he woke me at 10am. Great breakfast overlooking the lake! We decided to have a rest and sat outside and read for a few hours. It was delightful. The weather is perfect, around 75, and I think we hit Lake Como just before tourist season. I can't imagine what it's like here in the summer months. Many...

May 27, 2015 - Road to Lake Como

My cousin, Melissa, met us at our hotel for breakfast after coming back to Geneva from a whirlwind trip to the U.S. on Monday and Tuesday. She looked well and told us all the news of the Malhame/Dahan families. She misses California and is planning her return! We then got on the road to Lake Como, about a 4 hour drive through the Alps. Man, the tolls were expensive! I think we paid about $100 altogether. Oh, yes, and there is a slight dent in our rental car... Oops! We knew we were in Italy when we came face-to-face with a tour bus trying...

May 17, 2015 - Train to Milan and Como Italy

You have to love European trains! Although the departure was way too early for my tastes, the train left right on time and arrived at Porta Garibaldi station as scheduled. The scenery on the way was absolutely beautiful as it whizzed by. We took a taxi to Cadorna station for the local train to Como Lago. That was an experience. The cab driver only knew one word of English - "Ok". Fortunately we made signs for the addresses of the hotels and any places we thought we might need a cab. Richard just took out the sign for Cadorna and the driver...

May 12, 2015 - Last full day exploring Como

Leisurely got up this morning - well, I wad awake before the 7:30 church bells rang! We ate up the last of our eggs, Edie made a bread and orange run down the hill to the little store, and we had boiled eggs with toady & peanut butter. People before us left some supplies - peanut butter being one item. We will leave maybe olive oil. We walked to the tourist center to find out about bus schedule for going to Cenobbia, two towns up the lake. The young in there wasn't too helpful except directing us to the bus station. It was a short walk...

May 11, 2015 - Boat ride on Lake Como and exploring Bellagio Italy

Had a leisure breakfast showered, and got ready for our boat ride on the ferry on Lake Como. We didn't have any hot water yesterday, told our neighbor, and Voila! I think the hot water heater was turned off. Anyway, Adriano came over to see if everything was ok. She was in Assisi when we came and the man we met when we came was her husband, Gigliola. She showed us where the iron and toaster was (hidden in dining room buffet). I also got online for train tickets. Adriano said they would take us to the train station and Gigliola would carry...

May 10, 2015 - Funicular ride above Como

We took our time getting up. Washed clothes. After a breakfast of eggs, we headed to the funicular - a train that goes up steep inclines. It was very reasonable and the line wasn't long. It's already getting warm out. The ride up what'd an awesome. IWW. We went straight up almost. We heard there was a scenic overlook to the right after getting off.what a view overlooking Como, Tavernola, and Cernobbia. From there we walked the other direction. We met a lady on our walk to funicular who lived in Como and told us a couple places to stop that...

Oct 2, 2014 - The Lombardy Lakes

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Italy chapter on Lombardy and the Lakes has to say: “Writers from Goethe and Stendhal to DH Lawrence and Hemingway have all lavished praise on the Italian lakes, but even their words scarcely express the lakes’ beauty. Elaborate villas attest to the roll call of celebrity visitors and residents that the lakes, which are ringed by snow-powdered mountains, have attracted over the centuries. Tourism, though, isn’t as prevalent around the lakes as you might expect. Many northern...

Nov 23, 2012 - Lake Como

The next day we headed back to Italy. Mike had put the name of our hotel that we planned to stay in at Lake Cumo into the GPS. We kept climbing up the mountain with the roads getting narrower and the switchbacks getting more plentiful. Mike was frustrated as, when he talked to the hotel manager, he was assured that we had a lake view from our hotel room. We finally got there on a one-way street that we would generously call an alley in the states! Little did we know that there were two hotels with the same name, and Mike had punched in the...
