Sep 21, 2018 - Lapari

Got up super early and drove 1 1/2 hours to Milazzo to catch the ferry to Lipari. Back to island life for us. The gizmo that transfers pictures from our camera SD cards to the tablet has quit so the pictures that we now are uploading are from the phone only.

Sep 20, 2018 - Day 7 - Roma to Levanto

Time to say arrividerci to Rome. We'll be back on 3/10 ready to fly home on 4/10. We went down to breakfast early and then showered and packed ready for a days train travel. We are off to Levanto, near the Cinque Terre, via Firenze, Bologna and Milano....certainly the long way however it will do us good to have a relaxing day and one off our feet. We took to 8:30 shuttle and caught the train to Termini. We were out there early and it was drizzling, so had to stay undercover until the shuttle was ready. We've had lovely weather while we've...

Sep 20, 2018 - From Rome to Vieste

Buonasera from Vieste! Yesterday after breakfast we left Rome. The bus could not get close to the hotel due to the narrow streets. Our group had to go and meet the bus which was waiting for us just across the Tiber River in Trastevere. It was about a 10 minute walk. So picture this....26 people walking single file down the narrow cobblestone streets all pulling our luggage (imagine the sound of all of the suitcase wheels clicking and clacking over the uneven cobblestones). As we were walking we also had to to get out of the way of/maneuver...

Sep 20, 2018 - stage 27 San Quirico to Aquapendente

Overview/ Highlights We have now done over 1500km! A nice descent straight from accommodation then a little detour with a short sharp ascent into the old Roman spa village of Bagno Vignoni. The old baths were a huge pool of steaming and bubbling water, in the cool morning air. No bathing allowed (unless you booked into the expensive spa hotel), so it was off again for a very nice ride for quite away along a relatively quiet country road. Several pelotons of men passed in the opposite direction. We were on a popular cycling route. Stopped...

Sep 19, 2018 - Stage 26 Siena to San Quirico

Photos to be added Overview/ Highlights As we left we Met some Brazilian women also cycling the francigena... but not as far as us! Rode on a mixture of sealed and gravel roads until morning tea. There was one terrible unsealed climb. Many had to walk it as wheels were slipping. Morning tea we had in a little town, Buonconvento. Gaylene again had a challenge to get a large size ‘crema coffee’... it’s like coffee and icecream whisked together. Italians want to give a tiny cup of it and think more is too sweet ! After that we had gravel...

Sep 19, 2018 - CROSSING: Isle Giannutri, Italy to HBR. Portoferraio, Elba. (3:00am to 12:30pm)

Well, so not be the case of sleeping late! Jacques was up a little after 2:00a.m., and not liking what the wind was doing, thought it be best if we leave. So, up with the anchor, and off we go at 3:00a.m. From my bed, I was rollling back/forth and side/side, it was felt like medium close-together rollers. The seas were upchucking like this for the next 4 plus hours. Not truly a very comfortable ride.(pic) . Wow, we can see the end of the line! It won’t be long now. Tonight Elba, Italy tomorrow Imperia, France, and on into Cannes and Vieux...

Sep 18, 2018 - CROSSING: Isle. Ponza to Ise. Giannutri (3:30a.m. to 7:30pm)

Milena started her day much earlier than I did. There is something about starting my day, not only in the dark, but also in the middle of night that is not a pleasant thought. I have to hand it to these ‘three muskiteers’, they are forever alert, and on the move. They each make my life so easy. Even to the fact that we have had only one real day of bad seas, and that was the very first day..... leaving Corfu, and tackling a full fledged Beaufort 6! My day started at around 7:30a.m. . I was sitting in the salon, drinking my orange juice, and...

Sep 17, 2018 - CROSSING: Isle Pontile, Ischia to. Isle.Ponza(12:30p to 8:00pm)

Good morning.... we are getting a later start, waiting for Stephen to arrive on the ferry from Naples. Marina is bustling around the boat, while I had my own agenda — like laundry. Stephen came back with Jacques around noon, and we hoisted anchor and were on our way by 12:30p.m. (pic) As we left Pontile, I waved goodbye..... (pic) (pic) We continue cruising along the Eastside of Ischia. Once we got to Casamichelo harbor, and Lacco y meno I found myself waving a vigorous bye bye. I even managed to find the “mushroom” rock and take a...

Sep 16, 2018 - CROSSING; HBR Amalfi, Italy to Pontile, Ischia (Italy). (8:00a to1:00p)

Copolla came to Milena early this morning, and told us we had to leave now if we wanted to fuel up before we left. Being “a prosciutto slice of a BIG BOAT sandwhich”, Copolla helped us to squuuuuueeeeezze out of our spot, that was so very roomy when we arrived yesterday. (pic) . We were like a cork, being ejected from champagne, as we “popped” out from between two boats, as our slip immediately disappeared as it was swallowed up by our two neighbors. With Copolla and his zodiac at our side we carefully made our way toward the gas...

Sep 15, 2018 - Stage 22 Lucca to San Miniato

Overview/ Highlights Now there are only 6 of us. After Tom, Richard and I had breakfast in the town, Gaylene, Ian and Goran joined us for a little explore of Lucca (to find the famous ‘auditorium’ ) before we rode off on the VF route for the day. It was a fairly flat day’s riding through small towns and lightly rural landscape. Relatively densely populated countryside. Roads were generally fine. Stopped in Altopascio at a nice bar, for our morning coffee. They had a yummy iced coffee thickshake thing AND gf pastries in the freezer. Yippee,...

Sep 14, 2018 - CROSSING: HBR Reggio Calabria, Italy to Capo Palinuro, Italy (5:00a. to 9:00p)

Good Morning, and welcome to yet another day on Milena and her continued crossing to France, and Vieux Port, Cannes. For me, my day began the best of all days..... I got to talk to Lida... and even Ty.... It was so good to hear her voice again..... Blessings to you,Lida and thank you for handling all my complicated stuff when I am not home! My first picture of the day was after Milena had successfully maneuvered the Straits of Messina, while I was on the telephone. (pic) (pic) (pic) (pic) Our journey now Northward on the West side of the...

Sep 11, 2018 - Stage 18 Fornovo to Berceto

Overview/ Highlights We knew we had a big climb today so everyone was geared up (so to speak) for it. Tom headed off first to taking it nice and slowly. Helen and Gaylene followed later whilst Richard helped Ian replace his broken spoke with a special kevlar spoke that Tom had brought. Yay, Tom to the rescue. Meanwhile I had a pretty slow start to the day after little sleep and several bouts of vomiting through the night. No idea what caused it and although I was fully recovered by morning but I certainly wasn’t in top form for the climb....
