Sep 19, 2019 - Arrivederci Italy, Hello England

We bid a fond farewell to Italy this morning. We had absolutely NO problems at all which, considering we got lost a LOT in Venice, was atypical. We reached the water bus right on time, it delivered us at the water terminal right as the water bus to the airport arrived, and we made it to the airport without a hitch! The airport was unique because it listed water arrivals as well as land. It was spotless, well-designed and never seemed hurried. If I rated the Venice Airport it would be near or at the top of the list. Not only was the Airport...

Sep 18, 2019 - Murano & Burano

We woke to an overcast and cooler day. This was our day to head to the islands of Murano & Burano. We took the vaporetto from San Toma to the San Marco/Giardetti stop to check out our plan of attack for leaving tomorrow. To our amazement, the stop for the Ilalguana vaporetto to the airport was on the other side of the same dock. That should be easy & NO steps! On we went to Murano, the island of blown glass. That is exactly what it is. Every shop, and there are many, was filled with blown glass. Some of the high end shops were like museums....

Sep 17, 2019 - Discovering Venice

2019-09-17 OUR FIRST DAY IN VENICE This morning we got a good look at our apartment and were thrilled. We had not one, but two patios that were for our use only. The interior was recently renovated, and sported rows of LED's for lighting in the bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen/dining area was not upgraded, and we lived with a single bulb in the ceiling for some time until we found a short LED strip over the microwave. Still, it was a delightful place to live, and even sported another bedroom (sleeping room for 7). Hey, that means any of...

May 21, 2019 - Two days in Venice, Italy

Day 24 Monday 20th May 2019 Venice, Italy 𯇮𯇹 We were up around 6:30am as we had to be out of our cabin by 7am, so down to breakfast with all of our hand luggage. We arrived in Venice about 7:45am and were ready to disembark but had to wait our turn until about 9:45am. Walked off the ship and went through immigration then picked up our luggage in the arrivals hall, and walked to the people mover in light rain (about 1 km away). We were dropped just near the main railway station and then walked to our hotel about 300 metres away. After we...

May 12, 2019 - Venezia

Our room overlooked the Grand Canal, and it was such a thrill being woken early by the many water crafts - delivery craft and others going to work. Then the chimes from the Church told us it was time to get up! It is pouring rain and very cold! So armed with a Hotel shower cap over camera lens and wet weather gear, we braved the elements. Fortunately not many people out and about yet (but by midday, the crowds were so thick with umbrellas everywhere.) We entered the front area of the Ferry, and wondered why there were only a few people...

70 Canals 2019

May 11, 2019 - Today’s THE day - off to Venice!

After showering again in the “broom” closet, went down for breakfast. The waitresses wear traditional black dresses with white lace collars and stiffened cuffs - as of old! Then, we pushed our suitcases the 600 metres from our Hotel to the Railway Station “Termini,” over pothole pavements, bouncing the gutters, cross roads with peak hour traffic - no! don’t look that way - you are in Europe, then around crowds that don’t move aside for “oldies”. Successfully completed! So exciting in ItaloTreno fast Train - we are in row one, having...

70 Canals 2019

Oct 29, 2018 - Venice, Italy

Venice is the capitol of northern Italy's Veneto region. It is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals - including the Grand Canal thoroughfare - lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The islands are linked by over 400 bridges. The Central square is Piazza San Marco or Saint Mark's Square. It contains Saint Mark's Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics. The other important structure is the Campanile bell tower that has been there as long as the Basilica. This square...

Sep 27, 2018 - Day 14 - Day trip to the Dolomites

Chiara recommended that we visit the Dolomites if we had lime while we're away. Today's the day. We had to be up reasonably early so we could walk to meet our driver at Piazzale Roma at 8:30. Surprise, surprise, Riley had left over pasta for breakfast before we got under way. Sarah once again took the tour leader role and made sure we arrived at the meeting point with plenty of time. It's another sunny day however we all dressed in layers as we were told it would be cool up in the mountains. We met our fellow travellers, 2 Australians and...

Sep 26, 2018 - Day 13 - Venice and walking tour

We have a walking organised for today however it doesn't start until 4:30 so we decided to have a lazy morning. I popped to the supermarket to get the makings for pasta sauce to have when we return from the tour. We still had half the packet of pasta we bought on the farm so didn't need to buy pasta. Both kids decided mushrooms for breakfast might be nice so I bought extras...some for pasta, some for breakfast. I cooked the pasta sauce so we could dish up dinner fairly quickly when we returned from the tour. Brekkie over, we sent off to...

Sep 25, 2018 - Day 12 - Florence to Venice

Time to pack up for the next leg of our journey. The train to Venice didn't leave until 11:30 and we had until 10:00am to vacate our accommodation so I let the kids sleep late and then we breakfasted and finished packing up before leaving at 10. We were sad to say goodbye to our little apartment. It was very cosy and suited us well. We stopped at the local market in the square not far from the apartment and Riley and I bought a couple of souvenirs from a local craftsman. We were both happy with our purchases. We made sure our journey took...

Sep 13, 2018 - Venice or Venezia

Our full day in Venice was EXTREMELY full. We gathered early in the lobby of our hotel after breakfast and then headed to our personal water taxi for a trip to Murano Island. It was quite foggy that morning, but in its own way, it made the trip more enchanting. Murano Island is known for glass blowing. After a demonstration, we were shown some of the studio’s signature pieces and then browsed the showroom. Many of the tea and coffee sets included gold as part of the glass and were just beautiful. I did see a very modern blown glass burro...

Sep 10, 2018 - Venice Day 2

After a good nights sleep, we slept in and almost missed breakfast. Our plans for today included a three hour walking tour, followed by a water taxi tour of many of the canals around Venice. Cathy arranged the tour, and it was wonderful. Our tour guide was absolutely delightful. She showed us many historical places, and history here means many centuries . We had a pistachio gelato this afternoon, which apparently is the best anywhere. It was indeed delicious. Tom and I ventured back to the hotel to escape the mid-afternoon heat; you can...
