Sep 19, 2010 - I've stayed in every blue light cheap hotel ....

Can't win for trying Dust off those rusty strings just one more time Gonna make them shine .... It's tough to follow an act like The Ritz-Carlton. Not to complain or anything but since my epic week in luxury it seems like I just keep ending up in one dusty, dirty, moldy, run-down hotel room after another. Fortunately for me there's been enough exploring to do that I haven't really needed to spend much time inside. I flew out of Kuala Lumpur into Penang. Penang is a huge island off the north western coast of Malaysia that is home to a...

Mar 13, 2007 - "If you're from Thungsong, I'm from England"

Hello Everybody, It's been a while since our last update, and a lot has happened. We'll report in sections since that looks best on our map:) Our first destination after we left was Ko Lipe, a small beautiful rustic island near the Malaysian border. We spent a few days just relaxing and taking in the scene there. We met some fellow Americans, and hired a longtail boat together for a day of snorkeling and beaching in the marine national park nearby. We had a great start to our next adventures, and eased in with some billiards and cocktails....

Jan 9, 2006 - koh lipi - like an old fashioned advert for bounty bars

Well this is all very exciting. We are now able to post video on the website. Not really sure how it all works, but I've had a first go, so fingers crossed that you should be able to see a short and shaky panorama of the beach we stayed on on koh lipi. It was hotter and sunnier and prettier than it looks.

Dec 10, 2005 - Thailand - Ko Lipe

Ko Lipe is only 5 km from Langkawi but because of border regulations you have to go via the mainland and cross into Thailand to get there. A day's travel instead of the 20 minutes it could take. The island is just outside Ko Tarutao MNP so has become fairly developed as it's a good base for island hopping, snorkelling and diving in the park. The diving was actually quite expensive and as the reefs are quite shallow here we opted to do a day's snorkelling on one of the dive boats for around 1/6th of the price. In the water Kevin pointed out...

Jun 22, 2005 - Langkawi, Malaysia

Greetings from Langkawi, Malaysia! Natalya Langkawi is an island in Southern Malaysia and it is beautirful here. The monsoon season has started here and every day it rains for a short period of time. The sun is nice and warm here. We are staying at the Sheraton here (using our Starwood points again). It is located right on the beach and has 3 amazing pools. The Malaysian jungle is all around us and monkeys are frequent visitors here at the resort. Apparantly they visit at 7am and we will definitely be looking for them tomorrow...

Mar 4, 2005 - Singapore/Langkawi

17/25 Feb Singapore We spent the first half of our week in Singapore staying with friends of Karen's Lynne and Rob in their gorgeous black and white (a pre war house occupied originally by British army officers, called a b&w because the blinds are black and white striped - Newcastle United house really). David used the swimming pool to improve his back. Karen caught up with many of her Singapore friends and we went to a few functions including a preview at the Opera gallery (see photo of the Russian girls) where much Champagne flowed. After...

Nov 27, 2004 - Across the border to Malaysia

I took a ferry from Satun and crossed the Malaysian border to the island of Langkawi. Apparently it's the first day of the Malaysian school holidays and I was greeted with hordes of excited kids as I stepped through immigration clearance on the Malaysian side, great! Managed to find some OK, if overpriced accommodation on Pentai Cenang beach. The beach is just across the road and is fab, white powdery sand and not too crowded. The Malaysians seem to prefer to go on to the beach and swim in the evenings which leaves us western tourists to...
