Mar 31, 2008 - Totaranui to Marahu South Island 7th to 9th March 2008.

Sylvia’s Comments Our journey back over the dusty, winding, hilly road between Totaranui and Wainui took us up and over Pigeon Saddle, passing a number of internal tramping tracks that are in the area. On the top it felt like we were up in the canopy of the native forest of rata, rimu and many other tree that have been logged from the coastal areas. Leaving the camp site in the morning we were not as lucky to have the road to ourselves and had to negotiate our way past tourist buses, cars and motorhome of differing sizes. We managed it and...

Mar 22, 2008 - Kayaking

We were up bright and early today in order to spend the day on a kayaking tour of the Abel Tasman National Park. After departing headquarters we drove to the water taxi launch. We thought it was weird that all of the taxi boats were on trailers. After the passengers were loaded onto the boats tractors lowered them down a boat launch. Why don't they just have piers (we found out the answer later that day). The water taxi took us 30 minutes up the coast to Bark Bay. There we put on our gear and started paddling. Our first stop was a bay where...

Second Time Around

Feb 8, 2008 -

Jan 5, 2008 - Abel Tasman

So after a long but beatiful drive through Malborough Sound and up the west coast we arrived on the gorgous coast of the Abel Tasman National Park! The weather was loverly and the sea was almost as blue as Thialnd! There where also some great free camping spots along the road which we took full advantage of! The first day took a little strole of the local areas and found an amazing little cove with a split apple rock which looks just like the name surgests!. We also booked oursleves a full tore of the coast by aqua taxi which would show us...

Dec 22, 2007 - Ok, Ok New Zealand wins

Ok, so the jury has deliberated and returned with its verdict. We were wrong to ever doubt it, New Zealand is fantastic and beautiful and all those other things everyone else had ever told us. It is just a little bit moody and unpredictable and it just so happens that during our time in the North it was having a few bad days. Fortunately it now seems to be much happier again and is certainly taking great pleasure in revealing to us its sunnier side . We had spent our first night in the South Island in a pretty campsite on a marina in...

Nov 11, 2007 - Abel-Tasman

Day 36-Abel Tasman Woke up this morning and had a light breakfast in our little apartment and we were out the door by 8am. The drive to Abel Tasman National Park was just like so many of the drives here in New Zealand. We followed the coastline past huge coastal flats that were starting to get exposed as the tide was starting to move out. This part of NZ also has a large number of orchards, mostly apple and cherry. We arrived at the very small village of Marahau that was inside the park. Our first stop was an information center that booked...

Oct 14, 2007 - Abel Tasman

David and I woke up and headed into Abel Tasman National park, which was just a little hop over from Nelson (1 hour). It was such a beautiful park. I know I have said it, but it's just the diversity on this land that is amazing to me. We did not get into the park until around three, so we only had time for a 3 hour walk. It was such a pretty day. You walk through these windy paths that lead you to deserted white beaches. Then you walk through these lush rainforest, and moss covered caves all surrounded by this aqua blue water. We then...

Jun 29, 2007 - Abel Tasman Region

We left the North Island and headed across on the ferry to Picton in the South Island. from there we headed to Nelson where we stayed in a holiday park in the woods. From here we walked through the woods along the river and back to the holiday park. It was aboout 7kms and half way through we had a picnic by the river, it was gorgeous. From Nelson we headed up the coast a bit to Marahau which is the first stop in the Abel Tasman National Park. This is a tiny town beside the beach. The morning after we arrived we got a water taxi which...
