We still had some driving to do so set off on the scenic route via Ahipara to Mangamuka and then another scenic route via Kaikohe, passing the gorgeous towns of Opononi, Omapere and the Waipoua Forest and its huge Kauri trees. Stopping at Tane Mahuta, its the tallest Kauri tree in NZ at 51.5m high and over 2000 years old, we also took a quick walk to see Te Matua Ngahere - the Father of the Forest with the biggest girth of all the Kauri trees at 16.41m and finally the Four Sisters which are four trees all feeding off the same trunk. Jan 24, 2005 - Northlands West coast

Our plan was to head up the west coast of Northland, up to the tip, then down the east coast. We started out by taking the state highway out of Auckland. The first thing we noticed was the roads - outside of the major cities they don't have any motorways. All the roads (even the state highways) are single lane and in the U.K. they would probably be classed as A or even B roads!! There are occasional, additional slow lanes up hills where everyone goes mad trying to overtake each other but other than that, all single lane traffic. The west...
