We set out for the West Coast with stop at a very big dairy farm along the way. The Land Corp farm is located in the rainforest side of the S. Alps and receives over 100 inches of rainfall per year. The soils are acidic and water logged - squishy when you walk. The land and fauna are incredibly different from those we have seen thus far on the other side of the Alps! The Land Corp Farm (a State Owned Enterprise) was "developing" inefficient farm land for dairying. The process of development was estimated to cost $20,000 NZD /hectare....Jump to full entry
Jun 5, 2006 - Run to the hills...
Sorry about all the pictures of rocks, but I can assure you they were very cool rocks. This was at Castle Hill, which for all the climbing nuts among you (of which i know there are a few) is a big place for bouldering. And was pretty much completely deserted, so if you're ever in the area. Arthur's Pass, further down the road, was also pretty cool, and definitely a good choice to go back up into the mountains before leaving the South Island.
