Dec 25, 2012 - Day 5: Merry Christmas! Cruise to Carnley Harbor in the Main Auckland Islands
We cruised into a protected bay on Christmas morning in Carnley Harbor. The ship's galley prepared a wonderful Christmas feast for lunch. After lunch we sailed out of the bay into the South Sea. We were on the bridge looking for birds and watching the seas erupt. We rolled and pitched at severe angles. The waves were crashing over the bow and up against our window. Dec 24, 2012 - Day 4: Enderby Island
Last night, we sailed to the Auckland Islands. A gale ensued, resulting in huge swells. The ship rolled 33 degrees at night which disenfrangized all of our luggage, chair and papers all over the cabin. All through the night, we would slide from one end of the bed to the other, banging our feet first then our heads on the walls. The most challenging task to accomplish was taking a shower. This is a World Heritage site and a nature reserve, New Zealand's highest status of protected land. Sunrise: 0549. Sunset 2207 HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! The ship arrived around midnight at Enderby Island and anchored in Sandy Bay. We had a relatively early start with the first zodiacs leaving for the beach (about 1 km away) at 0830 hours. There are very strict rules about what you can and can't take onto Enderby Island. No food at all and boots need to be cleaned on the ship before departure.
