I had big plans for today, I was going to drive all the way around NZ's north eastern coast along highway 35 to Gisbourne and spend the night nearby, and the trip on the highway through the Maori dominated part of coastline with its deserted volcanic ash beaches and green hilly landscape was memorable. May 23, 2008 - Opotiki to Gisborne and on to Tolga Bay North Island 06 to 07 May 2008

Jeff Every day is a beautiful day and this one has good weather as well. The clearer weather afforded better views of Whale Island and White Island and this should be a good day for our journey through the Waioeka Gorge. Whilst conversing with our neighbors, (what nice people motorhomers usually are), we were joined by our host Jon. Yesterday I learned that he was a local Coastguard and they act as volunteers in the same manner as the Lifeboat Service back home; and voluntary funded just the same.
