Mar 24, 2006 - Day 66 Update - Palmerston North

We woke about 9am after an OK sleep in the car. We managed to check into a hostel that had been sold out the night before. it was called the Pepper tree hostel, it was actually someones house converted into a bed and breakfast, it did look like an OAP retreat but it turned out to be OK, warm, clean and the staff really helpfull. We spent the rest of the day completing some much needed chores such as paying parking fines, posting some things home and Chris getting a much needed hair cut. At night we went to a couple of bars in the town...

Mar 6, 2006 - Ohakune ---> Napier

We zien Mount Ruapehu. De berg die in Lord of de Rings Mount Doom wordt genoemd. In Palmerston North moeten...

AJUUS !!!!!!!

Jan 31, 2006 - Depart Palmerston Nth

After a week of farewells I was ready to go again. Cara, Hope and Holly took me to Wellington. We visited Te Papa before going out to the airport. While waiting to go I remembered that I had not filled my anti-malaria prescription so we made a dash to the closest chemist to do so. Then I said my good byes to my girls - that was sad. The flight was OK but there were 2 empty seats beside me seemingly to remind me that Garry was not there. So I offered them to a family who were sitting opposite me. They took up the offer and filled the empty...

Karen's Trip 2006

Jan 22, 2006 - River Valley

In river valley, it sucks. my dorm is a 16 bed room with 8 pieces of foam right next to eachother on a plank of wood, and then an upper bunk done the same way. at least there are only 5 or 6 of us in there so we were able to space it out. this place is so remote that we had to walk part way because the bus can't go down the hill. there is a nice stream to swim in though, i'll do that tomorrow before our bus leaves while most people are rafting some grade 5 rapids. i'll be in wellington tomorrow which will actually have internet cafes that...

Dec 1, 2005 - Picton to Levin (Ferry to North Island)

Arrived at the campsite in Picton ready to get the ferry in the morning back to the North Island. As we had a bit of time on our hands we went to the Seahorse world by the harbour this was pretty cool they also had stingrays and lots of different Fish found off the New Zealand coast, also a touch tank where the children could touch starfish and most shell fish. Another great boat trip through the Sounds across to Wellington to get off the boat, we had alittle look around Wellington but it was pretty hectic so we drove straight to Waikanae...

Nov 15, 2005 - Spaceships, saddles and sulphur - cont

Napier It was time for something a little more sedate after that, which was just as well as our next destination was the pretty little art deco city of Napier, lodged squarely in the middle of Hawkes Bay wine country. Jusht the tickhetttt..... The town of Napier was levelled in 1931 by a huge earthquake that, perversly, helped the region become what it is today. The earthquake raised the sea bed by 5 metres, freeing up large swathes of land for development. The almost mediteranean climate coupled with the soil characteristics, made it a...

Jul 3, 2005 - Campervan chaos

We thought that last Sunday was a wasted day in Kaikoura without being able to swim with the dolphins. That was nothing. Today is officially the most stupid waste of a day ever. We spent 5 hours in a wood panelled room with nothing to do waiting to collect our campervan! The whole episode was the shoddiest mis-management we've ever been a party to. We had to get up quite early because check-out at the funny hostel is 9.30am - way too early if you ask me, but anyway. We managed to get up and get all our stuff out on time but then had a very...

May 8, 2005 - In Palmerston

Stayed with Karen's brother and sister-in-law in Palmerston North so that my trip to Wellington to catch the ferry would be shorter. On the way to their house we drove around the surf highway and saw some pretty impressive waves but it was also wicked cold, so no surfers. In the morning, Karen's brother and sister-in-law made me waffles with real Canadian maple syrup, which was so nice of them. Their house was adorable and I had a lovely time staying with them.

Nov 16, 2004 - River Valley and the Lord of the Rings

Hey Guys, Well I am sitting here in River Valley doing this posting and it is raining and is super cold. So much for the nice weather.. ha ha. Anyway today I did a couple hikes in the rain and cold but it was cool cause it all scenes used in the Lord of the Rings movies. I really kinda felt as if I was making the trip to Mordor... ha ha. Anyway arrived in River Valley and it is beautiful but the hostel is very "rustic" so I can't wait to have a nice room in Wellington. Anyway I hope all is well at home... thats for all the postings and I...
