Feb 21, 2020 - Coromandel Peninsula

Hot Water Beach Day 170 When this trip was first mooted, I spoke to my friend Michelle’s daughter Claire who had just come back from New Zealand and she said that we must absolutely go to Hot Water Beach, so that’s where we’re going today. The beach is towards the northern end of the Coromandel peninsula, about 90 minutes’ drive from Waihi. The peninsula juts into the Pacific Ocean east of Auckland and although very close to the largest city in New Zealand it is still quite remote and isolated, with quiet roads. The beach is on the eastern...

Nov 21, 2013 - Tairua

We stopped in another freedom camping on the Tairua estuary for the night but had to move before 7.30am so moved to a carpark about 1 km down the road k facing the other direction and the waves of the pacific ocean pounding up the beach. Quite a spot for breakfast. We then cycled back to Paku Hill to climb to a view over the estuary and up the coast. This is a rhIolytic volcanic dome and was a very very steep climb up mostly big steps to the top but it was worth it. The "hill" is connected to the mainland now by a sandy spit which is...

Mar 13, 2013 - March 13, 2013 - The Coromandel

March 13 Left Cambridge around 9:30 this morning and headed to the Coromandel. On the way, we repeated a small portion of the road we were on our first day with the Habitat group. Between Paeroa and Waihi there is a neat canyon we went through with falls. We stopped again in the area just up the highway from where we stopped with the group. Still didn't do the whole hike as we were on a mission to get to Hahei and do a hike into Cathedral Grove. It's about a 35 minute walk each way although we detoured to Stingray Cove on our way in so we...

May 4, 2012 - Tairua

Hello all, We left Helensville and headed to the Coromandel Peninsula. Just when we had decided that North Island was lacking the beauty of South we discovered this gorgeous region. Tairua is built on mountains peppered with pristine properties circling a lake and leisurely harbour. An evening stroll and watching the sunset was all that was needed after a decent length journey. Driving around NZ is a real pleasure just the views from the windows are enough, you real don't waste a day if you drive nearly all of it. What's more Kiwi radio...

Feb 24, 2009 - Feb 23rd 2009 Auckland to Tairua

Feb 23rd 2009 Auckland Met our fellow tour travelers – just one other couple – and our tour guide, Richard Neale. This is really nice as four people make decision making easy for when to do things. Joel and Nancy Cohen live in Florida but originally from Long Island . Joel was a tie designer ( who lived in Como, Italy for 35 yrs.) working with Italians on design and manufacturing for companies such as Liberty in London, and goodness knows who else. He drops names like Armani, YSL and Ralph Lauren all over the place. He does have some funny...
