Took a bus trip up to Cape Reinga right at top of Northland - the buses drive along the beach for 64 miles (its called 90 mile beach - work that one out !) and at the far end there are huge sand dunes where Alec did some sand sledging. Our driver was a Maori with a very strange laugh which he used a lot to celebrate his own jokes ! A few were quite funny though e.g. Kiwis bury Australians 12 feet down - why ? - because deep down they are Ok guys ! Maoris are buried 6 inches deep so they can still get a hand out ! Jan 17, 2006 - Baylys Beach - Aphipara ( via Waipoua Forest home of the Kauri Tree )

The Waipoua Forest park visitors centre offers the chance to save the Kiwi which is declining to extinction as 95% of the eggs hatched never reach their first year due to preditors such as stoats & possum. The Kauri tree which is in abundance in many forms, mostly preserved in swamps throughout this region but the living ones can reach 60metres in height & have a trunk 5metres or more in diameter.The gum found in these extroidinary trees is farmed to produce jewellry & objects sculptured after being highly polished.
