Aug 23, 2018 - Colca Canyon

We are up at 5.00am this morning as we are going for a walk to a lookout point across the Valle of Colca. We can see small villages on the other side of the canyon and down to our right is an oasis of green where different crops can grow because the altitude is so much lower. Some of the small trails we can see on the other side of the canyon date from Inca times. Back to the Hotel for breakfast and then we go back to near the Condor Cross and we walk for an hour or so to get to the lookout. As we walk we can see quite a few condors but as...

Aug 21, 2018 - Arequipa

Today we leave our Hotel around 9am to vist the Museo Santuarios Andinos. Here we are given a guided tour of the artifacts found in the tombs on Mount Ampato, dating from 550 years ago. We are shown ceramics, jewellery textiles and also the remains of Juanita a 12 year old girl that was sacrificed to the gods for good crops and favourable weather. She was discovered in 1995 when a nearby volcano erupted and melted the ice on Mount Ampato. When found she was frozen, therefore mummified naturally, so all her internal organs and some fluids...

Aug 20, 2018 - Arequipa

We arrive into Arequipa at 5.15am. The bus was very comfortable and we managed to get quite a lot of sleep. The whole busload is being dropped at their Hostels or Hotels and we are the last, so we arrive at Casa Consuelo Hotel at 6.15. Unfortunately our room is not available so we sit in the foyer until 7am and then we wander up to the main square to hunt for a place to have breakfast. As usual there is a man on the footpath trying to get passers by into an upstairs restaurant but we are happy to go as it overlooks the square. An American...

Apr 27, 2018 - April 27, 2018 – Arequipa, Peru

April 27, 2018 – Arequipa, Peru We had a later start this morning so we did not have to roll out of bed before 8 if we didn’t want to. However, I woke up at 6:30 so I just went ahead and got up. It is a good thing that we came yesterday because there was a strike by group of laborers (we didn’t hear who), and the road on which we came to Arequipa was closed by the strikers for several hours. As it was, one of the streets here in town was closed by miners who were demanding their pay for the work they had done. To say that traffic was...

Jul 13, 2014 - Germany Defeats Argentina

We had lunch at Crepisimo - lots and lots of different crepes to choose from. When was the last time you had a crepe? I forgot how much I like them. I finally had a chicha morada, a beverage, made from purple corn boiled with cinnamon, cloves and pineapple skins. Delish! The game is on the big TV screen and all during lunch the score was 0-0. Boo hoo - Argentina lost The World Cup, however, it was fun to be part of the buzz as soccer is so big in Peru. Walking down any street the game is on in every restaurant/bar with people cheering...

Jul 13, 2014 - Arequipa - The Last Day!

Repeat of yesterday - breakfast in bed and lounging. We are going to 11:30 mass at the Cathedral that dominates the main plaza. This cathedral is the only one in Peru that stretches the length of the plaza. It is one of less than 100 basilicas in the world entitled to display the Vatican flag. Not sure what the criteria is to have such an honor but I will try to find out. And by "I" I mean Mirta will need to ask one of the locals. Some speak English, however, some do not. Sunday is also mercado day in Arequipa - let's see what little...

Jul 12, 2014 - Arequipa - The Lazy Day

The day is off to a great start - breakfast in bed, compliments of Mirta, who brought food to our room. We ate in bed as we checked email and lounged. The shower in this hotel is to die for and we take full advantage of the nice bathroom! Our first stop is Museo Santuarios Andinos where Juanita, the Ice Maiden is housed. She was the beautiful young girl (age 12) who was offered to the gods by the Incas - they thought the gods were angry due to the volcanos, rain and lightening. Juanita traveled to Ampato Volcano accompanied by a great...

Jul 11, 2014 - The Day Of The Condors!

Short night - up at 5:00 with breakfast at 5:30 a..m. A great variety of cereals (nothing remotely like we have at home), home-made yogurt, freshly squeezed papaya, pineapple and orange juice and of course their incredibly yummy bread with cheese, olives, tomatoes and avocado. The second half of the tour continues......to see the condors. First we make 2 stops at nearby villages in the Canyon; to visit their church and perhaps to have the tourists spend some of their money on local crafts. We do the former, not the latter. The scenery is...

Jul 10, 2014 - Colca Canyon

Breakfast at Tierra Viva (our second hotel of the trip) is the most standard breakfast yet. Cereal, eggs, pancakes and sausage already prepared. It really didn't matter as we didn't have time to lounge. Our driver, Cocoa and our guide Olivia picked us up at 7:30 a.m. and we set off for yet another experience. This tour includes 2 days and 1 night in Corporaque (Thursday) and the Colca Canyon (Friday). It's a 5 hour ride from Arequipa, stopping along the road for coca tea, however, this time we had tea with 3 herbs; coca, and 2 sprigs of...

Jul 9, 2014 - Arequipa - Day 1

The day begins having breakfast with our friends, Ghia and Kasey from Dallas. We say goodbye to Carlos, our host and off we go with our driver to the Cusco Airport. The flight to Arequipa was a short one, 35 minutes with amazing scenery of the mountains peaking above the clouds. Those clouds seem to just hoover over the mountain tops. Mirta and I both had window seats and looked at this sight the whole way there. We check into the hotel and as usual, we hit the ground running! We walk around the town, getting the lay of the land and even...

Jun 17, 2014 - Arequipa to Colca Canyon, Peru

Tuesday 17th June 2014 Arequipa to the Colca Canyon and Coporaque, Peru - Day of the Condors We woke up at 3:00am this morning and left at 3:30am in a minibus for our trip to the amazing Colca Canyon. By about 5:30am, we had reached an altitude of 4,910m above sea level and we stopped for a photo opportunity. We looked across the landscape to see two beautiful volcanoes, one smoking, in the crystal clear morning air. A fantastic sight. We then drove further and by around 7:00am we had reached a little town where we stopped for a toilet...

Jun 16, 2014 - Puerto Inca to Arequipa, Peru

Sunday 15th June 2014 Puerto Inca to Arequipa, Peru Left at 7:00am after an early breakfast. Today was a driving day and we travelled from our camp in Puerto Inca down the desert coast of Peru through dry dusty towns and spectacular roads close to the coast but high above it. We finally turned inland towards the mountains and arrived in Arequipa, set at around 2,300 metres above sea level with a perfect volcano overlooking the town. Arequipa was badly damaged in an earthquake in 2001 as were many places in this area. We have seen many...
