Aug 26, 2018 - Cuzco

After breakfast we wander down to the square and there is a big parade being held. People everywhere. We have a look in a couple of streets to try and pick out our Hotel from 2004 but can't remember where it is. Finally we decide to go to an upstairs cafe and have a coffee and watch the parade. There are Military platoons, clowns, service groups, bands and children’s groups, all parading around the square. It is very colourful and noisy. We watch from the comfort of the balcony sipping on a coffee! We head back to the Hotel as we need to...

Aug 25, 2018 - Cuzco - Phil's 66th birthday

Today is Phil’s birthday. We breakfast in the Hotel, drop off a large amount of laundry to be washed, still only (PEN12=A$5) and then head to the Square. It has been 14 years since we have been to Cuzco and whilst it does seem familiar a lot has changed. The traffic is a lot heavier and Cuzco seems more “refined”, not so much a hick little town. We spot a café with a balcony overlooking the square so make our way there to enjoy a coffee and people watch. There are many marquees set up in the square this weekend for a book fair. Whilst...

Aug 24, 2018 - Arequipa to Cuzco

Up really early this morning as we have to be ready for our PeruHop bus at 5.15am. They pick us up on time in a small van and we are dropped off to an area where others gather and the Bus collects us there. All is going well as we go in the same direction as we did to the Colca Canyon. We have a small break for breakfast and then back on the road. About an 2 hours into our 12 hour journey we stop. And we don't move for 1/2 hour and then we crawl along for a short time. Then we see trucks on the other side of the road, but facing the same...

Jun 7, 2018 - Cusco to Machu Picchu

I went to Machu Picchu. I had to go on a train for 3 hours. Then I had to go on a bus up the mountain, it was very scary and twisty as we were high up. Final, I got there I had to wait a few minutes before I could go through the gates. I was there for 3 hours. It was so cool.

Connor's adventure

May 2, 2018 - May 2, 2018 – Cusco, Peru

May 2, 2018 – Cusco, Peru This was a free day. I don’t know what the others did, but I slept in a little and then repacked my suitcase. Cheo had loaned us duffel bags for the trip to Machu Picchu, and I had to get that stuff back in my suitcase so I might just as well repack so that I was utilizing the suitcase space to the maximum. I’ve bought some souvenirs and Christmas gifts so some rearranging was needed to get those things into the case. As I was going out to get a bottle of water, I met Wally and Donna who were looking for a bank so...

May 1, 2018 - May 1, 2018 – Aguas Calientes to Cusco, Peru

May 1, 2018 – Aguas Calientes to Cusco, Peru This morning we made our way to the bus which took us to the top of Machu Picchu. It was a 20 minute drive to the top over a gravel road which made many, many switchbacks as it climbed to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The trail to hike to the top kept crossing and re-crossing the road. There is not enough money in the world for me to have climbed up – even if I was 50 years younger. I used my trekking poles and was able to make all but one of the steep ascents and descents over stairs of uneven...

Apr 30, 2018 - April 30, 2018 – Urubamba to Aguas Calientes, Peru

April 30, 2018 – Urubamba to Aguas Calientes, Peru It was another early start this morning. We had to be ready to leave the hotel at 7:30 which meant having breakfast at 6:30 which gave plenty of time to go back to the room and do some last minute packing. A bus, a really luxurious one, picked us up and took us to the train station. First, we returned to where we were yesterday to see if anyone had found Coleen’s camera. She had left it at the coffee counter when she got coffee yesterday. Unfortunately no one had reported finding it. There...

Apr 29, 2018 - April 29, 2018 – Cusco to Urubamba, Peru

April 29, 2018 – Cusco to Urubamba, Peru Well, so far I’m not having much problem with altitude sickness. Today was the test as Urubama is higher than Cusco. So far, so good. We started early again this morning. Our 1st stop was at the Cristo Blanco (White Christ) statue in Cusco for a panoramic view of the city. From there we drove to the Piscac Ruins. These ruins were awe inspiring, but not nearly as much as the Ollantanytambo Ruins which was the last stop of the day. The Ollantanytambo Ruins are enormous. The town was a crossroads for...

Apr 28, 2018 - April 28, 2018 – Arequipa to Cusco, Peru

April 28, 2018 – Arequipa to Cusco, Peru We had another early start this morning. We left the hotel at 7 and arrived at the airport about 7:30. We got checked in and waited for our flight to board. It was an uneventful flight, but I must say it’s the 1st flight I’ve been on in a long time where there were empty seats. When we arrived in Cusco, a driver met us with a small minibus to take us to the hotel. This was another case where we weren’t too sure about our hotel when we got off the bus. It was not a particularly nice area, but we...

Feb 9, 2018 - Mon 5th after breakfast until dinner

After the ecstatic morning with the river otters, we had barely 5 minutes to have breakfast and we were on the move again under the strict guidance of Silvario. This time we marched 3km towards the clay lick to hopefully see what appears. The heat is very much increased as does the ratio of mosquitoes per cubic metre. We sit within a hide approx 30m from the lick. The wait is intense and finally there was a gathering of macaw in trees, their incescent squawking, chatting and screaking built to a high level of noise, but they remained high...

Feb 9, 2018 - Tuesday 6th PM local farm and sunset river trip and journey to Lima

After our visit to the tree, shower, and lunch we had a late afternoon trip to the local farm where. the food from the hotel was produced. The site was just across the river and as we approached the plot the farmer and his wife were working on the land in baking hot sun. The area had been cleared of rainforest to grow the crops and there little cover for the workers. The huts provided little more than cover and were built from the trees felled during the clearance. As expected the farm had many sorts of fruits, potatoes, herbs, rice,...
