Oct 20, 2018 - Puno- Lake Titicaca

A beautiful view of lake Titicaca from our room this morning with Guinea pigs running around on the back lawn, maybe like those restaurants where you choose your fresh fish from the tank. After breakfast we were taken at 7am to the port where we boarded one of the many boats heading out on tours into the lake. It was a 36 seater boat with many nationalities on board with the main guide whose name was Cleaver, he was very informative and funny. Or first stop was Uros and into one of the many floating islands. The islands are made from...

May 4, 2018 - May 4, 2018 – Puno, Peru

May 4, 2018 – Puno, Peru This morning was another early start. We left the hotel at 7. Our ride to the port where we boarded our boat for the Lake Titicaca experience was those little bicycle passenger cabs. It was fun, and also a bit scary given the heavy traffic. Our boat, the Calipso, would hold 32 passengers, but there were only the 9 of us plus the 2 guides. Since the 1st two stops were a National Geographic activity, we had a National Geographic Guide as well as Cheo. The boarding process was interesting. We had to climb over 2 boats...

May 3, 2018 - May 3, 2018 – Cusco to Puno, Peru

May 3, 2018 – Cusco to Puno, Peru It was a long bus ride today. It was through the Sacred Valley which we learned last night at the Planetarium was formed by the Milky Way when it touched down to earth and formed the Urubamba River. Much of the landscape looked like eastern Colorado or any of the Plains States. We stopped at the Cusco City gates which were some 50 miles or so from the current city of Cusco. We were able to walk on the actual Inca Trail at that point. In fact, part of the highway runs along the Inca Trail in this area. The...

Jan 28, 2018 - Tiquila Island

After having left the idilic setting of the Uros on the floating reed beds, we headed out by boat to the Tequila island in the centre of lake Titicaca. It's people there still follow the exact doctrine and traditions of the pre Inca period. The people still dress to the exact codes laid down over millennia. The style, colour, hat and bags all have an exact status of hirachy and martial position. Only the men knit and sew and only the women spin and weave. Also if a boy wants to date a girl he has to sew a band so tight that it will hold...

Jan 27, 2018 - Lake Titicaca

Arrived at the Libertor Hotel which is in a remote Penisular overlooking the reed beds. I am up at 05:30 still pinching myself to think that we are here in a place I'd only dreamed about or saw on some National Geographic TV program. Just missed a beautiful sunrise over the reed beds but raring to go out to the meet the peoples of Uros and their handmade floating homes made of Totora reeds. Our group of 6 were presented to a family onto their floating home.(island). There are 92 floating islands joined into a main water street, upon the...

Sep 22, 2015 - I made it! (cue the Rocky theme song...)

Tuesday. ....Ok, more like the Big Bad Wolf huffing and puffing song. We'll come back to that later but I take back what I said yesterday, Lois & Jack, about the altitude posing no problems! Back to the beginning of the day: super early start with Abel picking us up at the hotel at 6:40am. Mario Andretti Jr. drove us to downtown Puno where we picked up a young Canadian couple and their guide then a short trip to the docks where we boarded our boat for the day. The boat was a convergence of a good number of people and their guides. Sitting...

Sep 21, 2015 - Hitting "Puno York City"

Monday. Happy birthday to Jef and his sister, Lisa, born on the same day 15 years apart! They both love vanilla cream pie as their cake of choice; I hope Lisa gets hers but it looks like Jef will not! But he did get a nice breakfast at the buffet this morning :). A not-too early start, we met Juliana in the lobby at 8:45am for our transfer to the airport. Since it's a domestic flight, we only needed to be there an hour ahead of time. Check-in went fine, catching the plane went fine and arrival went as scheduled. The airport is actually in...

Aug 24, 2015 - A few days at Lake Titicaca

Being so high and also being the dry season, the air is exceptionally dry, we woke many times during the night to drink water and lots of it. When we woke up we were not disappointed by the view or the weather, it was a beautifully clear day and the hotel is situated right on the shore of Titicaca. it was beautiful to get out on the lake in kayaks, Toby and Felix shared, Dad and Tash shared and i went with the guide in a canoe, where I didn’t have to paddle nor did I get wet unlike the others. Felix and Toby took this as an opportunity to...

Aug 22, 2015 - The Andean Explorer to Puno

So we are sad to leave Cusco as we really enjoyed our time here, but again we are off on another adventure. We left The Monasterio at 7.15 for a short trip to a different train station to board The Andean Explorer for our 10+ hour journey to Puno. We arrived at the station shortly before 7.30 and true to form Carmen arrived with our tickets shortly after. We almost immediately boarded the train and found our “armchairs” which were to be our home for the next 10 hours. as well as the 4 carriages there was also a bar carriage and the...

May 6, 2015 - Puno, Peru and Lake Titicaca

The day we toured Machu Picchu we left by train back to the Sacred Valley where we went straight to a private bus and on to Cusco to the same hotel we started from, arriving about 9 pm. It was a long day and we were all very tired. I was feeling my sickest and asked Carlos, our tour guide, if he could book me a private room. I didn't want to make Leonor sick and I would rest better alone. That was an additional $150, but worth it for the rest. Next day was a free day and most of the others went on a tour of some salt flats and Inca ruins....
