Kamchatka is about the world's most beautiful place as far as I'm concerned, but you can almost never see it because the weather is so crap. On my previous trip in 2004, we spent days waiting for the skies to clear so we could heliski down a volcano. We bided our time in hot springs, cat-skiing in thick fog, and - most popular - bowling. If we did get up in the birds, it was only to ski down low foothills laden with thigh-busting spring slush - Siberian cement. Aug 26, 2008 - Russia onto Japan

Monday 25/8/08 5.00am arrived in Petropavlovsk, mist/fog 10 degrees, sunshine expected later in the day and temp getting up to 15o. The Harbour looks spectacular- surrounded by 26 volcanoes, the highest ones have snow on them. The Kamchatka Peninsular has over 162 volcanoes - many still active. We go ashore by tender today our ship is too big to dock. The Russian Customs have been on board since 5.00am and processing our passports once we get our passports we can go ashore. Brian cashed $60US dollars and got back 1200 Rubles. 10.30 Still...

Tuesday 19-20th August At Sea - since not being able to call in and visit Kodiak due to bad weather (please note Petra put in 70 knots winds, in fact it should have read 70 miles- 35 knot winds) we have had flat seas and the trip has been wonderful as we cross the Bering Sea and make our way to Petropavlovsk (Russia) We have seen pods of whales, in one day we counted about 14 whales slapping the water with their tales, the whales do this to stun the fish and then they casually swim around and pick up the fish while dozen of sea birds sit on...

TALBACHEK VOLCANO MOUSTACHE TICKER... is back from the penalty box!!!... in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, consecutive drivers of vans, buses and cars yield 10 of 50 moustached men (20%)... guides used offer 1 of 2 (50%)... on a drunken cruise with Russian pharmacists, 2 of 7 (both balding...hmm...; 28.5%) go 'stache; at the Esso regional museum, photos of Eveni locals put the 'oh you!' in moustache with 13 of 50 (26%)...
