Oct 4, 2019 - Last day in Ljubljana

This morning I had breakfast at a cafe on the river. I remembered that the British couple had told me about a free city walking tour this morning at 11 so I walked over and joined that. It was really interesting. It lasted a little over 2 hours. Slovenia has only been a country since 1991. They were formally a part of Yugoslavia. In 2016 they earned the title of Europe’s greenest city. They are in the top few (I can’t remember the exact ranking) of Europe’s cleanest cities and with the most forest. I am really impressed with this city. It...

Oct 3, 2019 - Lake Bled

What a beautiful city! I strolled around a bit then walked to the bus station and went out to Lake Bled. Beautiful!! I had some of the famous Bled cake which was very good but I was bombarded by sparrows trying for my cake lol. On the bus back I was seated by a couple from just outside London. We had such a fun visit we ended up going for a walk together once back in Ljubljana and then for a coffee. I really enjoyed visiting with them. They have done a lot of traveling and shared many stories. The man said yesterday in Ljubljana he was...

Oct 2, 2019 - Ljubljana

I caught the train this morning to Ljubljana without any problems. The train station in Vienna is new and so much easier to navigate. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking!! I wish I could have taken more pictures but I was too busy admiring the view. A man on the train said it was the semmering train (spelling??) which has been written about because of the view. The parts of Austria and Slovenia that I saw were so beautiful. It started raining just before the train arrived so I was a bit wet when I reached my B&B. It is walking distance...

Nov 1, 2018 - Last day in Ljubljana

We had a leisurely last day in Ljubljana. The plan had been to float down the river, but since it was swollen, Biljana told us that a river cruise that was scheduled for 45 minutes would take 5 and be dangerous. So we headed to the castle instead. The castle is perched on the hill above the city, and there is a funicular ride included in the admission ticket. When we arrived the town was covered in cloud, but by the time we left the castle museum the sun was out. There is an exhibit on the history of Slovenia which is rather like an...

Oct 29, 2018 - Walking tour in Ljubljana

After our tour of the caves, we arrived in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. This city is our last stop on our tour. It is an interesting and beautiful city. Although we have hit some showers, so far we have been lucky enough to have rain only when we have been in the bus. For an hour and a half we hiked around the city looking at the lovely buildings, shops, markets, and restaurants. It was rather cloudy and getting dark since we have shifted to daylight savings time, but we will be here a couple of days so there will be more...

Oct 24, 2018 - Ljubljana, Slovenia

We arrived in Lujbljana on Oct 23, stayed overnight, then saw the town on Oct 24. Lujbljana is the capitol of Slovenia. Its patron saint is Saint George. The legend of Saint George and the Dragon describes the saint taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices; the saint thereby rescues the princess chosen as the next offering. So he slew the dragon of Lujbljana (the "j's" are silent). You will see pictures of the dragons on the four corners of the Dragon Bridge. Many of the buildings of the old town were from centuries ago...

May 22, 2018 - The land where no one stops………………..literally

This week we sampled the absolute delights of the Slovenian capital city, Ljubljana and the magnificent hiking and biking near Radovljica. We fell in love with Slovenia 4 years ago and this time it did not disappoint as places often do on a second visit; in fact it seemed to grow in stature. A cross between Prague and Amsterdam, but on a much smaller scale, Ljubljana seems to combine the best of western Europe with a touch of eastern block communism hanging on just to add character. We even managed to get a tough full day hike right from...

May 8, 2018 - Ljubljana, Slovenia to Venice Italy

So now we are off to Italy but have a stop in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, first. This is a city of only 300,000 people and each day at 10am the streets in the city centre are blocked with bollards and become pedestrian only areas. Lots of market stalls and also shops with Slovenian handicrafts. We had a river cruise on a lovely wooden boat and then had time to wander before we headed to Venice. This took longer than expected due to heavy traffic however after leaving the bus and taking the vaporetta we got to our hotel about 6pm. It...

Sep 12, 2017 - We are in Slovenia but we have never left Croatia

Another rainy day and only 50 degrees! Our passports were stamped when we left Slovenia a week ago and entered Croatia. When we crossed through Bosnia they were never stamped that we left Croatia or entered Bosnia but stamped upon entering Croatia when leaving Bosnia (never an entrance or exit stamp for Bosnia). On returning north no stamps on the pass through Bosnia. As we got to the Slovenia border there was no stamp for leaving Croatia but one for entering Slovenia! Because the line for all passports was long, we went in the EU line.So...

Aug 13, 2017 - Ljubjana, Slovenja

This a.m. we awakened in a little corner of paradise. Outside was Worthersee Lake, a long narrow lake squeezed in between scenic mountains. Sailboats, paddle boarders, water skiers and the occasional pleasure boat were enjoying being on the water under the sun. Downstairs a delicious breakfast awaited us. After we headed out on the 2 lane highway to Klagenfurt, turned south on E652/91 totally defying the GPS. We left busy traffic behind as we wound up Loibltal Pass (9367). Craggy grey-beige rock, green forest greeted us as we poked along...

May 29, 2017 - Leaving Ljubljana (on our way home!)

Monday,May 29, 2017 Travelling Home Up at 7:30 am, shower, breakfast and packing for the flight home. We are being picked up by a taxi to take us to the airport at 11:30 am. Our flight to Frankfurt leaves at 1:25 pm. We walked down the very, very quiet streets this Monday morning. Hardly any tourists and all the residents are back at work. Very hot again. We are wearing jeans in preparation for our flights and made sure to walk in the shade. We ended up at the market which was open again - smaller than Saturday though. Eke bought a top that...
