Apr 19, 2006 - To Koh Tao

19 April 06 - To Koh Tao I had decided that I had better leave Koh Pha Ngan today as wanted to take a PADI open water diving course in Koh Tao, considered one of the best places in SE Asia to do so, one of the cheapest and now being the best time of the year for it also. I have always said I would never dive, but decided maybe it would be good to face that monster and try to overcome the fear. Also thought that it would open up another activity while travelling. Checked out, but reserved a bungalow for my return on Monday. To get to Koh...

Apr 17, 2006 - Koh Tao

Koh Tao is only a 2 hours boat trip away from Koh Phangan, the island is much smaller and totally dedicated to diving, I will finally be able to test my new camera and its under water case... Our room is great and we have a great view on the beach. We are facing west and we had a great sunset last evening! I just finished my advanced diving course which means that I can now dive up to 40 meters deep... That was a very nice course, we had a very nice instructor and that was loads of fun! On our last dive me and my buddy (the person that...

Apr 14, 2006 - Crystal clear waters

So we didn't really realize it at the time, but we were hanging around the Koh Samui archipelago at an interesting time. It turns out that the Thai New Year was April 13th, and this coincided with the full moon. Some of you may have heard of the full moon parties on an island called Koh Phan Ngan very near Koh Samui. These are very large rave like festivals that last 24 hours. We opted out on this one as we knew it would be mostly 20 somethings, and we're way cooler than they are - we had somewhere better to be ;) The other aspect of the...

Apr 14, 2006 - Night Diving and Saturday

Last night might have been my most favorite experience of the trip...went night diving to a site called White Rock. It was unbelievable. I was a little freaked out at first, but it was fantastic to see how different everything looks in the dark. We chased a barracuda around for about 10 mintues while it was eating. We woke up sleeping fish, and even picked some up who slept through the whole ordeal (and yes, they sleep with their eyes closed). For those of you who have gone night diving before, this will sound so passe, but towards the end...

Apr 13, 2006 - Trying to Find Nemo

yesterday afternoon was absolutely uneventful...which was idyllic (i know, big word, not even sure if I used it correctly). Sat on the beach, read, ate, sat on the beach, read, drank some Gatorade, and did some more reading, but this time, in the shade. Had dinner with our new friends from London (Diane and Dan) and Stephan from Canada. They've been our constant dinner companions for most of the time on the island, so it's been great to end each day to see what everyone's been up to. I have an easy 10-15 years on everyone at the table, so...

Apr 13, 2006 - Ko Tao

Most hidious journey of our lives to Ko Tao. The night ferry, just never ever go on it. Awful and we were treated really badly by the people we booked through and ended up on Ko Phangan for 4 hours waiting outside 7 eleven till the next ferry to Ko Tao. All that after a long tail boat ride, a truck ride, a bus ride, waiting around a shack of 4 hours, on the night ferry for over 9 hours and then sitting on the floor of the ferry to Ko Tao for over an hour. Not happy to say the least. But Ko Tao was brilliant! Our fav island of them all and...

Apr 13, 2006 - Songkran and Full Moon - Koh Tao

today is April 13th...a very festive day in Thailand. It is a combination of the Buddhist New Year, the Water Festival, as well as the Full Moon. The Water Festival is the highlight in that everywhere (and I mean everywhere)people are standing on the roadsides and literally dousing you with buckets, pails, hoses, water guns full of water, and then for an added bonus, throwing powder and flour at you, so that everything leaves a sticky mess. Since my last entry, i went on a refresher course dive, and forgot how much i liked it, so I'm going...

Apr 11, 2006 - Koh Tao

Koh Tao literally means Turtle Island -- lotsa sea turtles. But in the most recent decades, they've found other less inhabited islands to breed. Back in the late 40's/early 50's it was also used as a prison. Today, Koh Tao is mostly a diving island, and this is where Lisa and I have decided to spend the rest of our time. It's quieter than the other 2 islands, Koh Samui and Koh Pahnang (where the full moon party is), and since the point of the trip is really to have beach time, and avoid additional 14 hour journeys, this is where we're going...

Apr 1, 2006 - Khaolak Live aboard and another visa run

So today is April 1st and I got back yesterday from a 4 night, 3 1/2 day live aboard in the Similan Islands, perhaps some of the best diving there is in Thailand. So Danielle, Dan, Lital, Perry, Wendy and myself packed our stuff up and left Koh Tao by the overnight boat on the 26th and arrived in Surat Thani about 4 the following morning. Woken by the police saying everybody get your stuff and prepare to leave the boat. Hhhmmm, . . so we got out and were hustled into the back of a covered pickup to be taken to the booking agents place to...

Mar 30, 2006 - Koh Tao

Koh Tao was our first island stop and where we decided to up our diving certification from "Open" to "Advanced", which included not only the ability to diver deeper, but the unique and frightening experience of doing a night dive. As luck would have it, our instructor Edwin was from Hamilton, one of the few people from Ontario we had met over our entire trip. Koh Tao is a beautiful island, and unlike its sister islands to the south, it has still maintained some of its authenticity by not being completely developed to meet the demands of the...

Mar 21, 2006 - Koh Tao

Have arrived in Koh Tao and escaped the excesses of Koh Phangan. We have booked a couple of dives and got ridculously cheap accommodation at the dive centre. But for a break tomorrow we are moving to a luxury bungalow with air con, fridge, hot and cold water, and best of all TV and DVD! That is more than we even had at home. So we are off to get some boot leg DVDs at one pound a go! The weather has broken a bit, and we had monsoon rains yesterday and for a few hours today (you will be pleased to hear.) As a result the temperature is a much...

Mar 21, 2006 - Full Moon Party photos and Ko Tao

Well we thoroughly enjoyed Ko Phangan, it was definitely a place to party and we did a lot of that there, especially at the Full Moon Party. It was great fun although the buckets of drink they sell you are really strong which we quickly found out! Before leaving Ko Phangan we went on a boat trip around the island which was really good. We expected to be getting on a big boat but when we got there it was this tiny thing with about 20 other people so that was cosy! It was great fun though, we went snorkelling - it was my first time doing it...
