Jul 7, 2017 - Mixing Fun With Culture

This morning we headed to a little French restaurant here in Bangkok but when we got there the power was out so we headed to another French bakery located in the Crystal Embassy Mall. The food was very good. The grilled ham and cheese sandwich had cheese toasted on the outside of the bread. Then we went upstairs in the mall. It has seven levels. There is a huge bookstore with both English and Thai books. There was also a large play area for children. Lily and I had a lot of fun playing there. We finished our day with more...

Jul 6, 2017 - Dinner and a Show

On Thursday Ms. Karen spent the morning doing some things all by herself. Her son dropped her off at Ten Ten Nails and she got here finger and toe nails all pretty. They couldn't help me because I just have fur and cloth on my paws. After that, she got some tacos. Then a massage. When she was done she took the Skytrain and got back to the hotel all by herself. We sat around the hotel for a while and then we took a cab to Central World. This is another mall in the Bangkok area. We had dinner at Din Tai Fung which is a restaurant from...

Jul 5, 2017 - Lions And Tigers And Bears, Oh My

Today we spent several hours at the zoo so instead of loading lots of pictures I decided to make a video for you today. You will find a link at the bottom of the post. When you watch the video watch for me and Lily to pop out in different places. Also, watch for the very cute baby otter. At first, his mommy tries to hide him but then he comes out to play. You will also see a picture of a group of local school children at the zoo for a field trip. I hope you like my ZOO VIDEO

Jul 4, 2017 - The Grand Palace and Other Cultural Stops

Today we started out by taking a ferry boat across the canal that runs through Bangkok. It was funny because we had to go through a ferry that was docked to get to the ferry we were riding on. As so as we got across we boarded another boat that took us down the canal in the direction of the Grand Palace. When we arrived at the pier there were lots of shops selling food, clothes, and other goods. We stopped at several of the stands and bought all kinds of fun food for breakfast. We had fresh pineapple, bread baked with raisins and...

Jul 3, 2017 - First Day in Bangkok

Today we arrived in Bangkok. After we got off the train we took a taxi to our hotel. After we got there we decided to head out for breakfast. We had breakfast at Tom n Tom's. It was a bit disappointing because their famous toast was "finished" for the day. Finished means they don't have any left. We had to make do with other choices. We then went to the Jim Thompson House. Jim Thompson came to Thailand with the military at the end the World War Two. He loved the country and came back. He moved 6 traditional teak houses onto...

Jun 26, 2017 - Hanging at the Airport

We landed in Bangkok and quickly got through custom and got the passports stamped. We can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days. We had to wait for Ms. Karen's son so we hung out at the Suvarnabhumi airport. We had a snack from Pie Face. These are very cute snacks. Everything they sell is in the shape of a little pie. Pie Face has savory which means things like meat and cheese; and sweet pies like apple. Each pie is given a unique face to tell you what kind of pie it is. There are many beautiful plants in the airport. One of the main...

Jun 11, 2017 - Last Day in China Town

We had our usual leisurely breakfast overlooking the river and decided one last stroll down Sampang Lane and the little back Soi's that bustle with market holders during the week. Knowing it was Sunday and the market was closed, we slowly found out, that whilst most of the stores were closed, the streets take on a new look of what could be best described as a sales day, what happens is that all the bargains come out, the cheap bags, the cheap clothes and lots of stuff, just thrown on a tarp on the side of the footpath. Prices are a steal...

May 4, 2017 - Hello Delhi

May 4, 2017 Day 155 Very early morning today. Getting up at five o’clock so I can get the free shuttle from the hotel to the airport. It only runs on the hour, so even thought my flight isn’t until 8:55 am, I have to take the 6:00 am shuttle in order to be timely for the check-in and immigration. If it’s anything like last night, I’ll need the extra time. Better to sit at the airport and wait then to miss my flight due to the lines at immigration. This airport is huge, and nothing is convenient. Air India is all the way down at the...

Apr 4, 2017 - Let all who are hungry come and eat

Let all who are hungry come and eat April 4 2017 Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean Pesach starts a week today. This can mean only 1 thing: “Let my people go …. home”. And so, our Exodus from SE Asia begins. We’re at the airport in Bangkok now and, all being well, we leave Bangkok today and arrive back in Edmonton before we left. I love the International Dateline. In between will be 3 flights (via Hong Kong & Vancouver) involving around 18 hours in the air over a variety of seas & oceans & more than 28 hours of total travel time. But that...

Apr 3, 2017 - Wat the heck .....

Wat the Heck …… April 3 2017 Bangkok, Thailand In 64 days of travel my wife only asked for 2 days off. Her first was in Siem Reap, Cambodia last month. Today, our last day in SE Asia before we leave for home tomorrow morning, was the 2nd. Being the magnanimous ruler that I am (in my own mind and don’t even start with me about that because I am very happy in my bubble world) I granted her request. I am a benevolent ruler. (God – if she reads this I am in SO much trouble). To prepare for her day off, she made me steal a napkin at breakfast...

Apr 2, 2017 - What you can get for 300 Baht in Bangkok

What you can get for 300 Baht in Bangkok April 2 2017 Bangkok, Thailand “The mountains gleamed around in a hedge of inaccessible purity, from which his eyes fell, dazzled, to the green depths of the valley. And when he heard the harpsichord’s silver monotony across the lotus pool, he felt that it threaded the perfect pattern of sight and sound”. -Lost Horizon by James Hilton, as reprinted on the bookmark left for me by housekeeping today. If I stay here long enough, maybe I’ll get to read the whole book on the bookmarks. I gotta say,...

Apr 1, 2017 - Chatuchak Weekend Market

Chatuchak Weekend Market April 1 2017 Bangkok, Thailand The Chatuchak Weekend Market is the largest market in the world. There are more than 15,000 vendor stalls crammed into 27 acres on land previously owned by the Thai Railway system. That is a lot of vendor stalls. I named them all. My favourite is “Spot”. (That was for my children). The brochure/map they hand out says this about the market: “Many Chinese tourists visit Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok to purchase fruits, handicrafts and milk tablets, etc.” I am intrigued. What is a...
