Nov 14, 2011 - A BBQ with Friends & Feeding ELEPHANTS!
It’s been a busy weekend! Friday we found a nice little beach called Sai Noi. There were maybe a dozen white people there & besides the vendors that snuck their way in it was nice and relaxing. I got a good burn – not that anyone feels sorry for me ;-) Saturday was one of the best days so far! In the morning we went out in the field ministry (door to door). There was about 15 altogether. There are 3 more families & a couple more single people here now for anywhere from 4-7 months. We are the only Canadians, everyone else is either from...Jump to full entry
Nov 10, 2011 - Headed to Malaysia
This morning we went to talk to the head of immigration to see if there was anything they could do for us. All we need is a month extension, long enough to be able to pick up Bryce, get our Vietnam visas & be gone to Laos. But no such luck. We doubted it anyways. SO the plan is to go to Penang Malaysia next week & get the tourist visa we SHOULD have got in Canada before we left. Honestly though even with the cost of travel it would have been the same price either way. I guess this way we get more adventure. We were going to take the train...Jump to full entry
Nov 9, 2011 - Pig Hoof anyone?
$2.10 is what we just spent at the market for a big watermelon, a huge pineapple, 8 mini banana muffins & 6 doughnuts. BUT we had to brave the market to get it! Every time we drove by one in the evening Brad would ask if I wanted to stop but I never had the desire or energy to go check them out. Being Asian is exhausting! Seriously. I guess it’s simple for them but my idea of shopping is a one stop shop like Walmart or Superstore. If I have to stop at too many places at home I even think it’s tiring. Here, besides the Tesco there aren’t big...Jump to full entry
Nov 6, 2011 - One Nasty Bug!
So today is the first day I've been out of bed for the last few days. I can't remember the last time I was that sick. I pretty much slept for 2 days straight, maybe up for a total of a couple hours. I have to admit I hated all things Thai the last few days. If the airport was closer & I wasn't so ill, I just may have hopped on a plane & come home. Yup, would have made it a whole week! I think I'm coming into the adjustment period now. The actual time we are spending away from home is actually hitting me & it isn't a couple week vacation. A...Jump to full entry
Nov 5, 2011 - Goodmorning
Good morning to all. Brad here. The chief story teller is in bed with some kinda nasty bug....eeeek! Its been two days now so hopefully she will be better soon. Ah where to begin?? Well today was the first day in the ministry. I got up, saddled my hog and was off to the hall for 9:30. Brother Paul took the group. There were 12 of us out this morning and with an English group of 20 that’s a pretty great ratio. Oh and one other thing I found out today... we are not a congregation here yet... We are just an English group but it is in the...Jump to full entry
Nov 3, 2011 - Turning Thai on our Scooter!
This afternoon we decided to go search for this beach the locals told us about. It's out of the way, no tourists, no vendors. It was another hot one today so we had to wait until about 1pm to head out. We had lunch just outside our apartment & it was delicious! Paul had told us about this place. Basically she has a little vendor cart outside that she prepares the food on & a couple tables inside. I asked them if we could eat, but I didn't know what. She said noodles or rice. We picked noodles & guess what they made us? Pad Thai! If only we...Jump to full entry
Nov 3, 2011 - Expectation & Perception
Since we got here I have been thinking a lot about our initial reactions. Why our expectations, being from Canada, really made the situation that much more stressful. If a Thai family escaping the floods (which there has been many coming here) got the keys to our apartment they probably would have looked at it totally different. They wouldn't have thought "boy that balcony is small or man this bed is too hard" no, they would have been grateful to have a clean place with a king sized bed & a shower. I've complained that the bed is hard,...Jump to full entry
Nov 2, 2011 - Hoggin’ It
Today was another great day. We’re really starting to relax & settle in. Each day seems to get a little bit easier. Brad got up early this morning to practise on our scooter. I will get some video of the traffic soon so you can kind of understand the craziness of the driving here. I started with YouTube now because I can’t upload videos through here very well. We don’t have too many videos yet, mostly just a bit of traffic in Bangkok & a ride from the back of a tuk tuk. With YouTube I’ll get more video! You can sign up to YouTube &...Jump to full entry
Nov 1, 2011 - Exploring Our Neighborhood & Our First Meeting
Today was a really good day. We had some frustrating moments – mostly to do with finding food. I think that has been our biggest challenge so far next to the language barrier. After we had gotten ready for the day we decided to explore our neighbourhood, since we have always gone the other way because of shopping. Today was the hottest day yet! It didn’t take long before the sweat was dripping. What a difference in the blocks behind our place. It’s so much more relaxed. Feels almost like being in the country. I took pictures of some of the...Jump to full entry
Oct 31, 2011 - Settling In Today!
We are exhausted today but so much more relaxed. No more panic attacks...for now anyways. Today was a very long day. We met Paul outside at 9am. He takes a tuk tuk to work so we shared the ride with him; he got off a few blocks before us. The driver took us to Market Village. It’s a huge mall complex much like ours. There was a market set up outside with touristy knick knacks which we didn’t even bother looking at it yet, we can go back some other time. I spotted a Starbucks instantly! After our shopping we had a delicious coffee. There...Jump to full entry
Oct 30, 2011 - Home Sweet Home???
Well we arrived in Hua Hin after a hair raising taxi ride down. It took about 2 hours but for most other people it probably should have taken 3 hours. Our taxi driver found it necessary to go up to 150km on the freeway. We had one near rear ender...not to worry anyone. I’m pretty brave but when it comes to trusting their driving – Now I’m not so brave! It’s funny there are so many stalls set up in random places along the free way. With strange things like plastic buckets and corn brooms...or hubcaps. The last one because if you blow your...Jump to full entry
Feb 18, 2011 - Hua Hin.
18 February. After the failure to find any room in Kaeng Krachan National Park and now on our way to Hua Hin, I felt a little bit miserable. Friday’s is not a good day for travelling, especially not now when we coming closer to Bangkok. Here we have to compete with people from Bangkok week-end travellers and of course they have pre-booked their rooms. For a moment, I wished that we stayed in Prachuap Kiri Khan. When the bus we were travelling on, came closer to Hua Hin, I started to look after landmarks, so I would know where I was. But, I...Jump to full entry
