Jan 26, 2012 - Travel by Bike!
We knew we wanted to get to the Cave Lodge today-- it's a guest house (many bungalows) on a wooded hillside above the Nam Lang (9km north of Soppong), and in addition to being beautiful, it's a great base for kayaking, caving and trekking. Our mode of transport ended up being a really great part of the day! It used to be that you could learn to ride a scooter/motorbike at the main rental place in Pai, but supposedly the police complained enough that they stopped "teaching". So I decided to try to get us a quick lesson just by being...Jump to full entry

When we came to our end of the rafting excursion in Mae Hong Son, we had the truck take us to Soppong, where we were going to find a taxi to take us 9km up the mountain to The Cave Lodge where we would spend a couple of nights and also celebrate New Years. When we got dropped off in Soppong there weren't any taxis or motorbikes(everyone was drunk apparently). Nov 21, 2008 - Caving!!
I got up early and caught the 7:00 bus to Mae Hong Son, planning to only stop briefly before heading to a town called Soppong to do some caving. After four hours of the most spectacular scenery of the trip, I arrived in Mae Hong Son and decided to get off the bus so I could grab some lunch. I walked into town, had an awesome Shan lunch, took a quick look around and then headed back to the bus station. By that time it wasn't yet 1:00, but it turns out that the next bus to Soppong didn't leave until 4:00. Darn!! Luckily, I had a book with me,...Jump to full entry

Descripton The town consists of about 100m of "developement" along the "highway" where it dips near the river Highlights Getting to Soppong on the mopeds was one of the coolest things I've ever done. You go up these mountain traverses, you're the only one on the road, and every bend opens up to ridiculous views of the mountains. You get to the top of the mountain and then go down into the valleys where people have beautiful valley farms and then you go up another mountain, etc. And riding the mopeds were just fun in of itself. Took a...Jump to full entry
