Jul 11, 2017 - London in the rain

We got up late this morning – 8:30 for me and 10:00 for Alice. I went down and had a bit of breakfast while Alice slept. We packed up all our cares and woes and took the bags done to be held by the concierge then headed off to our tour. We crossed Westminster bridge and walked along the Thames a bit - not much on the other side of the river. Then we headed inland as Alice wanted to get something to eat – like pizza. We stopped at a Pizza Express (with the exact same menu as Milano’s in Dublin!) and had lunch, then off to Convent Garden to...

Jul 10, 2017 - Back to London

Up early again and on the road by 7:30. Drive some distance with one stop for a bit then to Stratford on Avon. We stopped at Anne Hathaway’s cottage for a quick picture and then a group shop with the cottage in the background. Photo turned out pretty blurry it turned out. Then down the road a piece to Shakespeare’s birthplace where we rushed into the reception hall and had a salad, a drink, and sandwiches. Not great and seemed rather pointless. In any event we broke into small groups and wandered around the grounds watching some people do...

Jul 8, 2017 - If music be the food of life…play on.

What a magical musical week we had and it culminated today at the Royal Opera House in London. Last week Saturday we were taken to Lizzie’s son-in-law, Andy’s, choir’s summer performance put on at a nearby age-old stone church. It was a sell-out performance and we were entertained and transported on high with songs ranging from classical favourites to a medley of songs from our very favourite musical Les Misérables. As we left Oona, Lizzie’s 9-year-old granddaughter said – three of the sopranons shouldn’t be in the choir – they were off...

A Traveller's Tale

Jul 8, 2017 - A stitch in time…

Sad farewells to Derbyshire and the loved ones we left behind. But more of this later. We arrived into London yesterday at 2pm following a 2-hour train trip from Chesterfield. Not a minute late. A new experience - First Class. Do you know they give you complimentary tea, coffee, cold drinks like apple juice, peanuts, fruit cake etc all for the price of the First Class ticket? Thank goodness, they offer discounted tickets 3 months in advance – even with all the freebies us Antipodeans are always shocked at the price of UK train trips. Then a...

England 2017

Jul 2, 2017 - London for a tiny bit

Boarded a very full plane – they were offering $700 for people to delay until the evening, so luckily no one was thrown off the plane. Seats were fine and flight was only seven hours. Landed at Heathrow and caught a taxi to our hotel then went to the bar for dinner and a drink. Tomorrow we meet the tour at 7:45 and have to get up at 5:30 again, or just past midnight US time. Should be interesting.

Jun 27, 2017 - Going home

There were sadly no lingering farewells with Toni and Piet as they both rushed out the door for work soon after 7am. Just as well probably as I don't think Toni would like her Mum crying in front of the future son in law񏤔.. I really have so enjoyed my time with my daughter. Yes, she is strong minded and focused but I may share a few of her qualities I feel. So it was a quick goodbye and they were gone, leaving me to finalise my packing and make my way to the airport. I did have a bit of time and perhaps could have done one more small...

Jun 26, 2017 - Waiting game

Arrived at Heathrow on time after a good flight. We have about 3 hrs left before our flight - boring! The security man called C lovie! Of course we had to go through security here as well. You guessed it - the nightmare traveller who arrives at the scanner, then opens their case and starts pulling things out but only when prompted! Laptop, perfume, cosmetics, toothpaste, ......, brains?? C is off looking for a book that she won't read on the plane! We suppose we might need a drink and snack. J is unsure after his Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna!

Jun 26, 2017 - My last day in London

All good things must come to an end and sadly today is my last day in London. I would have loved to have attended a show but my leaving has snuck up on us and with Piet away for the weekend and us unaware of what time he would return, I realised that it was unlikely to happen. I did think about going on my own but did want to spend my last night with both Piet and Tonez so decided against it. So wanting to make the most of my last day, I packed my bags and did a little housework then I was off out the door. It was a lovely day and I thought...

Jun 25, 2017 - Recovery Sunday

After a nice sleep in, the plan was to visit the markets at Notting Hill. This is a lovely area and I don't know why I didn't take more photos𯘕. The only drawback was the hour long bus ride it took to get there. On arrival we wandered around the antique shops and market stalls. It really is a lovely place with some very upmarket clothing shops. Sadly a little too rich for my pocket, even with the sales on but it was still fun looking! We called into a busy cafe for a drink and a light snack before the long bus trip back. We both only...

Jun 24, 2017 - Birthday in London

Today is my birthday so after a slow start we were off to visit China town for lunch. We found a wonderful cafe called "Viet" which you guessed it, was Vietnamese. The food was delicious and very filling. After that we headed to Somerset House which is more like a Palace. A huge building which holds many exhibits. Toni had found a perfume exhibit which we found really interesting and informative. We came out smelling like roses lol! with many different scents tickling our nasal hairs 𯘀. After the exhibit, it was time for coffee and perhaps...

Jun 23, 2017 - Back to London

This morning I thought before I leave Edinburgh, I would climb up to Arthur's Seat for a view of the city. It was a very windy morning but I thought I would give it a shot. There were quite a few other people doing the same as it turned out. 30 minutes later I was at the top and even though it was extremely windy the views of the city was well worth the climb. The descent took me about half the time and I was soon back at Keith's to shower, pack and leave for London. As I had time before I caught the airport bus I thought I would find the...
