Jul 8, 2018 - Haines, Alaska

Left Juneau this morning on the ferry to Haines, AK. Took the fast ferry and it only took two hours to arrive here. We are now officially on the mainland of Alaska. This is a very quaint and sleepy little town. It is known for its huge population of bald Eagles as well as totem poles. Lots of grizzlies are known to live in the area. We took a great hike and explored the town, including the old downtown area, the boat harbor and the now defunct Fort Seward. Oh yeah, they have a hammer museum with over 2,000 hammers and the largest hammer in...

Jun 17, 2018 - Ferry to Haines

Went to the Assembly of God church this morning and had a warm reception. Had a great halibut sandwich at the Skagway Fish Co down by the docks. Loaded onto the ferry and had a ice ferry ride to Haines. Hotel Haingingland is on the former Fort Seward property and was nice but a little awkward.

Jun 13, 2018 - Haines, Alaska

Haines, June 13. We arrived just before 6:30 am. Sunrise this am was 3:56. I looked outside about 1:30 and it was dusky but not dark. Got up about 5:30 as I like to watch as the ship comes in. The temperature was 10 Celsius, or 50 F. Haines is a pretty little town on a sloping hillside. Fort William Seward is right off the dock. On the outside at least, the buildings look like they did long ago. We walked around there and then went into the nearby village. It's peaceful and quiet here. We did a little shopping and returned to the ship. The...

Jun 17, 2017 - 8" of snow

Another beautiful morning in Paradise, left camp and found our first grizzly bear feeding on the side of the road. He was one big dude! Spent the day watching the clouds shift so we could see high mountain peaks. Crossed the pass, 3564 ft, highest on the Alcan Highway with 8" of fresh snow on the ground. Took several short hikes in the Kluane National Park. Mom and dad saw a spectacular waterfall but wouldn't let us go because they were afraid we would try to go swimming. We did swim at Kathleen Lake, the water was so cold we decided to...

Aug 25, 2016 - good bye to Juneau

I went to the Glacier Gardens Rainforest in the morning. Mainly this is a tour destination for the cruise passengers, I had to wait to put accommodated on a tour as I was a lone traveler. Another, non cruise ship couple came in and the 3 of us were given a tour. The lower part of the gardens is on private property and extends into the Tongass National Forest, which is a temperate rain forest. The flowers in Alaska are much more vibrant than those in the lower 48. The gardens here are planted every spring and removed every fall and placed in...

Aug 22, 2016 - Good bye Haines, Hellow Alaska Marine Highway

Today we left the most expensive campground we have ever stayed at, it was a nice facility but we do not use the bathrooms, showers or laundry. Even though the rates are high, they charge extra if you want to use your electric heater or air conditioner. It was a morning of maintenance, cleaning the rv, cleaning the sewer tank (Glenn’s job), removing the tow hitch, stowing my bicycle and so on. The ferry charges by the foot and with a 35 foot RV and a 14 foot car, we didn’t want to increase the length at all by having a bicycle rack or a...

Aug 21, 2016 - Sunny day in Haines

Woke up to find blue skies and sun. A beautiful day, haven't seen one of these for a while. We hung around the campground for a while. This was the day that we agreed to drain and sterilize the fresh water tank. We had to drain the tank, add a mixture of bleach and water to the tank, refill it. and let it sit for a few hours before we drained it again, refilled it and partially emptied and refilled again. We also had to run all the faucets and the shower during each step. Time consuming, but we do drink water from that tank. After lunch we...

Aug 19, 2016 - Money in the Mail

Monday Since I got the check from MSD and deposited it through my phone and haven’t heard of any problems, I decided it was time to have my mail forwarded to me. I haven’t gotten my mail from my mail box in St. Louis since the middle of April, just before we crossed in to Canada. That’s just over four months’ worth of mail. When I called and asked about it, all he said was that it was pretty stuffed in there. If it gets too full they are supposed to send me an email, but I never got one. So, I hoped it was OK. I was surprised that it wasn’t...

Aug 18, 2016 - Haines and grizzlies

We woke up to a cloudy, rainy day. Tried to get out before the winds picked up but didn't quite make it. We rode through minimally inhabited area, mostly forests, passed mainly mountains, rivers and lakes. For a while the wind was very strong which makes the RV move in a very uncomfortable way. We went through Customs and arrived back in the USA. The Customs office is in a remote area and there is housing for the offices. After a couple of questions we were welcomed back. The campground I wanted to stay in was full, so we went to another...

Aug 14, 2016 - Day 49 Haines

Day 49 Haines Hitchup RVPark. Well.......weather not improving. Did a quick wash and shop. John also did a quick truck wash. Then went out to the ferry dock so we knew where we're going tomorrow. Took another walk into town...in the misting rain. Checked out a few of the shops. They don't have much here. Tomorrow we take the ferry to Skagway. It's about an hour and half trip. I don't know why we washed the truck, it rains every night and washes it off.(sort of) Dad just killed my pet gnat. He's been traveling with us since Anchorage.

Aug 13, 2016 - Day 48 Haines

Day 48. Rain, rain go away. Started raining around 6:30, (not that I was up or anything) and it hasn't stopped. Planned a hike, but cancelled that thought. Worked some more on planning rest of trip. And caught up on journal. Don't know if we'll have wifi in Skagway or whenever later. Later in the afternoon we went down to a salmon smoking place. In talking to the lady there she nixed our choice of restaurants and steered us to another. We went next door for a beer and the lady there gave us the same response. So, we went to the Light House....

Aug 12, 2016 - Day47 Haines, AK

Day 47. Hitchup RV Park. Best roads yet... Until we crossed back into US. They just kept getting worse til we got to Haines. A lot of spruce pine beetle kill. FINALLY a moose. Almost jackknifed the trailer stopping. But he just turned around and looked at me. I was despairing of seeing one. Campground here is very nice and groomed. Lots of neat grass. But we backed in and over look a boat repair yard or something. We love our large window in the back..until this! Our other view is our neighbors window. Took a walk into town ..about a mile...
