Jul 9, 2012 - On the road to Denali

July 9, 2012 Monday On the road again. Reminds me about yesterday’s trip to El Dorado mine and how I forgot to mention the serenade while waiting for the train to load. Didn’t catch the guy’s name but he played some Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Ray Orbitson, and others. He was very good and had actually opened for Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson and numerous other CW. He played a Gibson guitar and the fiddler yesterday of the 5 instruments he plays. He also talked of the historical aspect of the train and the El Dorado Gold Mine. It sure made...

Jul 6, 2012 - Healy

This morning I did nothing but laze around the RV. After lunch I drove in to Denali National Park to see the Visitor Center and Book Store. I took a few pictures of the displays inside the Visitor Center. On the way back to the RV I stopped at went through the shops at the area just north of Denali National Park that they call “Glitter Gulch.” I did not see anything there that enticed me to spend any money. The Alaska Bowl Company was nice but very expensive. I got back to the RV and put in a load of wash. Going to do nothing but relax the...

Jun 20, 2012 - Healy day 2

OK, so here we are on day 2 near Denali. We awoke early today and the sun was still shining, but within an hour it started to rain. We sat around til John said the rain had slowed, so we took off for a hike in Denali. It continued to rain for almost the whole hike, but that kept the mosquitos down. We hiked down to a lake where we saw a moose eating at the edge. Had to take a quick picture as the mosquitos were worse by the lake and the camera was getting wet. Stopped in town and went to lunch - had a fried halibut taco (very interesting,...

Jun 19, 2012 - Healy, Alaska

Denali RV Park. Very nice campground, don't feel quite so up close and personal to all the big RV's. It's about 8 miles from the entrance to Denali. Had a pleasant drive this AM. After setting up we went down the road to Denali NP. We check about our reservations and hikes, etc. Took a short hike. There's a correction on yesterday's blog. The "reindeer" I pictured were really caribou. I just assumed they were reindeer being at Santaland in North Pole, Alaska. (I never said I was a real outdoor girl). Also forgot to mention that we were...

Jul 20, 2011 - North to Denali

We left Anchorage heading north to Denali National Park and Mount McKinley. We started seeing Mt McKinley after turning onto Alaska Highway 3, stopped and took some pixs of it after reaching the State Park. Had lunch at the North viewing area and then headed on to Healy, AK to the McKinley RV Park and set up. Val and I walked up to get info on tours of the Park and found the 49th State Brewpub 1/10th of a mile down the road, so I had one while we discussed what we would do tomorrow. Went back to the RV and tried to order our tickets on...

Jul 14, 2011 - Denali National Park. Ak, Wilderness Tour

Today we had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to catch a 6 a.m. bus for the 8 hour "Wilderness" bus tour. Waiting for the bus to arrive we received our tickets for the park tour and complimentary(Ha!) bag lunches. After boarding the bus we discovered each seat had a snack box on it also so we had plenty of food and water. Because of the cloudy skies, it appears we will be very lucky to see Mt. McKinley today but we are still hopeful. We entered the Park and drove for 15 miles which is as far as anyone can go in their personal vehicles. A Park...

Jul 13, 2011 - Denali National Park. Ak

Left Fairbanks heading to Denali. Staying at the Denali RV Park in Healy only a little over 115 miles up the road. Stopped at Tatlanika Trading Post Company and RV Park as recommended in the Milepost. They had a huge stuffed Polar Bear but an even nicer gift shop. I am way past my allotment of Alaska souvenirs but Lyn finally found the neatest Alaska cap. We are disappointed that we haven't yet been able to see Mt. McKinley, but he/she only shows her face about 20% of the time so we may not see her at all. We are hopeful that we will get to...

Jul 11, 2011 - Healy, AK - On the Road to South Central AK

(Elena Writing) Have you ever had Stuffed French Toast for brunch? Well, that's what I prepared yesterday and served with sausage and fruit. It's easy to make using sourdough bread slices slathered with peach jam (compliments of my friend Dot) and Neufchatel cream cheese. Slap those slices together and dip in a French toast egg mixture and fry in pan. Sprinkle with powdered sugar (which I forgot to do) and serve with pure maple syrup, if desired. Yes, it's so yummy! I had my last chiropractor treatment this morning. It feels great to be...

Jul 22, 2010 - Denali

We had a lazy day. We went to the Visitor Center and took a bus to the sled dog compound. A number of the dogs were available to “meet.” The dog teams have been working in the park since 1939; they supply the ranger posts in the winter. These dogs are bigger/taller than the racing dogs, needing to pull heavier weights. Listened to an informative talk and watched the dogs in action pulling a sled with wheels. We did the Spruce Walk and the Taiga Trail; we saw moose scat and tracks, but nothing on the hoof. One path is off limits because...

Jul 21, 2010 - Denali Wildlife Tour

It rained overnight and was still raining, about 49 degrees as we headed to the Wilderness Access Center to join our tour. You are permitted to drive your own vehicle into the park only 15 miles, as far as we went yesterday. This drive on a school bus goes out to the Eielson Visitor Center, at mile 66. The tour started at 8:00. The driver provided “color commentary”; for the first hour and a half there were no animal sightings but we learned about the topography and climate zone transitions. The drive had multiple elevation changes, from...
