Aug 4, 2018 - Icy Strait Point

We arrived to Icy Strait Point to drizzly damp weather. We had a late breakfast and decided to wait a little bit to get off the ship since it was supposed to clear. Icy Strait Point is a new ship destination since 2004. Looked like just a dock when we arrived, but tucked beyond the trees is the visitor center, some shops, eateries, and the Hoonah Packing Company Cannery. The cannery dating to 1912 is now a museum with some historic machine displays. Icy Strait Point is on Chichagof Island and just 1.5 miles to Hoonah, home to the largest...

Aug 15, 2017 - Icy Strait Point Hoonan- Third Port of Call

We left Skagway behind and ended up at Icy Strait Point, within, what else, Icy Strait. The point is near the town of Hoonan on the northern edge of Chichagof Island. It is also very close to Glacier Bay National Park. This is the smallest port we stopped at. The point is owned by about 1350 Alaskan natives from the Huna Tlingit tribe. Since Steve keeps talking about owning his own boat, I gave him a chance to be captain. We chose another very different shore excursion. We signed up for a coastal exploration by 4 person zodiac. Steve was...

Jun 16, 2015 - Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, Alaska onboard Celebrity Millenium

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 Onboard Celebrity Millenium at Icy Strait Point, Hoonah, Alaska TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Of all the books in the world, the best stories are found between the pages of a passport." -unknown Slept very well after all that pedaling uphill yesterday (did I mention the hills?). Woke at 7 as we stopped in Icy Strait Point (town here is named Hoonah; it's the biggest Tlingit settlement in Alaska). Beautiful sunny day here, little cooler, upper 60s/low70s, getting cooler as the day went on. Checked email and took some...

Jun 4, 2015 - Hoonah, AK

Thu, 04 Jun: Hoonah Alaska aboard the Oceania Regatta Today is day sixth day of our ten day cruise and we're anchored off the Tlingit town of Hoonah. We visited Hoonah in 2012 but never left the ship due to really rotten weather and a good dose of lethargy. Today's weather wasn't anything to write home about (actually, that's exactly what we are doing right now, isn't it?), but we went ashore anyway. Guess the lethargy isn't part of today's equation. Anyway, we lazed around our stateroom till ten or so when they announced open tendering....

Jul 17, 2006 - Icy Strait Point

Monday We are at Icy Strait Point. The village of Hoonah is nearby. The day started out overcast, but then the mist and rain moved in so we decided to stay on the ship awhile before trying to go ashore. Later the girls decided to stay aboard, but Walt and I went ashore for awhile. There was more to see there than we had thought. We disembarked the tender at an old salmon canning factory. They had exhibits showing how it worked when the factory was in operation. Part of the buildings was set up as a museum and part were shops. We browsed...
