Jul 16, 2018 - Train to Talkeetna

On Sunday morning, we were up early at the Denali Princess Lodge as we were on the move again. We boarded a bus for a transfer to the Denali Rail Depot where we boarded the Princess train. Oh my goodness – it was so cool! There was an engine with 4 cars - each car was a double-decker with dining and observation rooms on the bottom, and seating on the top. The top level was all glass which provided optimal viewing all around us. We settled in and were on our way. We were in the 4th passenger car in the back of the train, and our car had the...

Jun 7, 2018 - Talkeetna

The skies were overcast as we left our site at Teklanika. We have really enjoyed the 4 nights here. The views of Denali and the surrounding Alaska Range have been spectacular at times and hidden in the clouds at other times. The weather pattern has been mostly clear mornings and then showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or early evening – we even had pea sized hail one afternoon. We have managed our resources very well – we have plenty of fresh water still available and our holding tanks are both ok, and propane is still above 50%. We...

Jun 4, 2018 - Magnificent Denali

Magnificent Denali!! Under clear blue skies with unlimited visibility we rounded a bend in the road and got out first full view of The Mountain – Denali. It is so spectacular. It seems to be a magnet for the soul. The view is almost beyond description and we are so fortunate to have such a beautiful day and such an amazing view. At Eielson Visitor's Center, we had our lunch with the mountain right in front of us - in my many trips to Denali, today we have the best views ever. Over the next three days, we have been on the bus every day,...

Aug 11, 2017 - Starting the Cruise

Side note: It is hard to keep up a log when internet is so hard to get. I thought I would be ok back in WA but their wifi wouldn't let me send pictures. The next campground had no wifi. This campground has wifi. Yippie!. The Alaskan/cruise portion of the trip is over. We got back to the USA several days ago. We changed hotels 7 times prior to starting the cruise and 3 times after leaving the ship. Needless to say being back in the RV, sleeping in our own bed with our own pillows is heaven. We will be changing campgrounds every so often but...

Aug 7, 2016 - Talkeetna, AK

August 7, 2016 The drive towards Talkeetna, 153 miles south on Parks Highway, provides many opportunities to view Denali from the south. However, rain started almost immediately and there was fog everywhere. We really saw very little of the Alaskan Range at all. The drive was pretty much blue spruce and birch the whole way with a few steep grades but mostly rolling hills. Arrived in Talkeetna (population (853) by taking a 14 mile spur trail road off the Parks Highway. The town had its beginning like most in the area by supporting the...

Jun 10, 2016 - Mt. Denali

The Mountain Wake-up Call rang at 4:34 am Alaska time. We jumped out of bed, quickly changed clothes and went outside to see "The Great One". There she stood in all of her glory! At 20,320 feet, Mt. Denali is the highest point in all of North America. What an amazing sight!! We took a TON of pictures, hoping that at least a few would turn out. Attached are some of our better shots. Our ATV excursion was a blast! For two hours, we drove our own ATV's through mud, water and some pretty rough trails. SO FUN!!!! This evening, we attended a...

Jun 9, 2016 - Mt. McKinley Lodge and Talkeetna

The past two mornings, breakfast was called "Sourdough Breakfast". Basically, a breakfast buffet with sourdough pancakes and waffles. Every meal we have here in Alaska includes at least one sourdough item: bread, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, etc... Trivia: A "sourdough" is a nickname referring to an Alaskan old-timer. Experienced miners carried their sourdough starter around their neck or on their belt, fiercely guarded, to keep it warm during the coldest months. Alaskan old-timers are likely to have heard about a sourdough starter that has...

Dec 5, 2015 - Talkeetna Bachelor Auction Weekend

This was a weekend that I went with friends up to Talkeetna where they have a wilderness woman contest and bachelor auction. The Wilderness Women contest has categories such as hauling water, using a chain saw and snow machine (notice native Alaskans I didn't say snow mobile)and pretend salmon fishing; and no I didn't take part. Then in the evening there is a bachelor auction. I didn't bid on any. I think the lowest winner was around $500. All the money raised goes to charity and it was a fun time.

Jul 7, 2015 - Talkeetna, Alaska

We went into the darling little town of Talkeetna, Alaska. Note: most of the tour companies do not come to this town. It is their loss! Stopped by the National Park Service to get our Golden Eagle Pass. (Age 62 plus) This entitles us to get into national parks in the US free for life. Then we walked the town and checked out the shops. We ate at a little outdoor café. The town as you can see is very colorful. Mostly log cabins or lodges. Just an addition to yesterday's posting. Our plane landed on Ruth Glacier which is between Mt. Dan Beard...

Jul 6, 2015 - Talkeetna, Alaska

Left Fairbanks this morning and the weather was nice and clear. The sights were every bit as beautiful as other days then as we got closer to Talkeetna we could see Mt. McKinley. I heard that most people that come to Alaska do not see Mt. McKinley because of the weather. It was clear today! This evening we took a tour with the Talkeetna Air Taxi. Our plane took us over the mountains and glaciers, however, the clouds came in and we were unable to see Mt McKinley. We landed on Ruth Glacier and the views were awesome, words cannot describe it....

Jun 7, 2015 - Talkeetna Alaska

Talkeetna Alaska 6-7-2015 We left Denali this morning pretty much on time and arrived in Talkeetna by 1pm. Not bad for a change. There was no wildlife along the road and the scenery was pretty obscured due to low lying cloud cover. So a view of Denali was out of the question. When we arrived at the Camping Park in Talkeetna I had mistakenly made a reservation for 8 days instead of 1. I thought they were kidding me at first. Then I thought they may want to bill me for all 8 days. But we worked it out and since the place is full he knows he...

Aug 21, 2014 - A sad parting

Talkeetna, AK At the Kantishna Roadhouse, guests are assigned tablemates. We were very fortunate to be given Tim and Julie. They are a delightful couple whose company we greatly enjoyed which is good because it turns out they were next door to us in our 4-plex, too. Today we had to say goodbye to them as our time in Kantishna has ended. We had to be up at 4:45 am and have our bags outside by 5:20. Breakfast was not until 5:30. Why would you have to wait for breakfast after you had to have the bags outside? There is nothing to do after...
