Sep 14, 2011 - The Countdown is On!

Last summer came up with the idea of taking a gap year to volunteer. It started with the thought that I would spend a few months in South Africa seeing my borehole and volunteering. Boy how things have changed. At times I was planning to go to Rome, Ghana, Nepal, or Vietnam. Every time someone asks me what my plan was, my answer was different. But one thing never changed: I knew I wanted to go to Dixie, South Africa and see the borehole. Now, my trip has developed into the one month in South Africa, two months in Ethiopia, ten days in...

Sarah's Gap Year

Aug 27, 2011 - Planning... it's not easy

I'll tell you one thing- planning a six month trip through five countries when I've never booked a flight without my dad's help is no easy task. Every time I think I've got everything figured out, I get another email telling me that something else has gone wrong. This week has been especially stressful as I am finally feeling like it's almost time to leave, but I still don't have everything in place. And on top of that I'm working all the time so I'm barely home to work on my trip! But while some things have fallen apart, others have come...

Sarah's Gap Year

Aug 10, 2011 - My Intinerary

As many of you already know, I just graduated from San Ramon Valley High School. I will be attending NYU (New York University) in the fall of 2012, but between now and then I am taking a year off and spending six months volunteering around the world. Below, I have included a full itinerary of what this trip will entail. September 22nd, 2011 I leave around 12:30 from SFO on the 22nd and fly from here to LAX to New York City to Johannesburg, South Africa. It's almost two full days of travel as I don't land in Johannesburg until the morning of...

Sarah's Gap Year

Oct 15, 2010 - Eugene O'Neill

Oct 15, 2010 384.0 70760 8:15 Sunny skies again today, it promises to be pretty hot. Yesterday was in the 90’s and today looks like it will be that warm again. We head out of Concord for Danville and the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site. The site is a memorial to playwright Eugene O’Neill. We find the train station and then try and find a large enough section of parking spots with not cars. Success, now if no one boxes us in we should be good. It is a 4 hour limit and that should work out just perfect. The Ranger and the van arrive...

Jul 4, 2010 - Travels with Rig #8

RIG: Dude - we’re back again. Once Angela got back from Denver, we headed for the hills. First up was Sequoia and Kings Canyon Natgional Parks (they're kind of connected). Woo-Hoo – Back in the Big Trees! Home of some of the largest diameter trees and oldest trees in the world. Several trees here are named after presidents. G & A did some light hiking, but mostly enjoyed the majesty of the trees here. There was still snow on the ground in a lot of places. Our next stop was in a great spot about 3,000 feet up and 25 miles outside Yosemite...

Nov 24, 2007 - Jill and Dave's California Wedding

On Thursday the 22nd, Dad and I flew into SFO, and met up with Mom who was already there for much brewhaha of a wedding. Jill and Dave got married that Saturday. My coup for the weekend was teh 58 lbs of persimmons purchased at a farmer's market then carefully packed in suitcases wrapped in 99 cent a yard flannel from Joann's Doorbuster sale...
