I am in a forest on the west side of I-5 in Dunsmuir, just a few minutes away from my cousin, Frankie, and his wife, Dona. After I got settled, they came over for a visit and then took me out to a Mexican restaurant in Shasta. They and I were surprised that the restaurants they tried first were closed on a Sunday night. But at least something was open and we had a good visit. Today, I woke up to a clear morning and could actually see the crags they were talking about yesterday. May 18, 2012 - A Short Ride to Dunsmuir

After running a few errands this morning, Pete & I decided to take a short drive up I-5. We saw the roadside sign for the town of Dunsmuir, we thought, hey...we've never been there, lets check it out. What a cute little town, as you look up the main drag you get a view of Mt. Shasta, its so cool. We just drove through town, turned around & headed back, stopping long enough to get an ice cream cone at the local Burger Barn & getting a photo of the Baptist Church (built of rock).

Jul 16, 2010 - Hike Castle Crags

It was a 7AM departure to avoid hiking in the searing heat. It is to be 95+ today. Castle Crags State Park is located just six miles south of Dunsmuir,CA and features soaring spires of ancient granite. Elevations in the park range from 2000 to over 6000 feet at the top of the Crags. Mt. Shasta glows as a brilliant snow capped white monument to the right while the glacier polished crags soar in front of us. The granite material was formed beneath the earth 170 million years ago and were then thrust upward by geologic activity. We hiked 5.6...
