Oct 8, 2017 - Los Angeles - hop on-hop off bus Day 2.

8/10/2017. Sunday. Los Angeles Ian had a good sleep in this morning, and just had time for a quick shower and then down for breakfast. We caught a taxi to link up with the hop on-hop off bus and were in the city area of LA - whatever that means. It's such a big place - where is the city centre? We went to the Farmers Market and The Grove, which is supposedly famous in LA, and then we joined the bus for a few stops and walked along the Avenue of Stars, and in my naivety, I thought it was just one street, but it's both sides of Hollywood...

Oct 8, 2017 - Los Angeles Hop on-Hop off bus

7/10/2017. Saturday. Los Angeles No rush this morning - leisurely breakfast then we decided we'd do the hop on-hop off bus with a 2 day ticket. We had ice creams at the Marina Del Rey as we admired the water, big and small boats, a seal splashing in and out of the water and a brown pelican, whilst amazing at the amount of money which must be tied up in this small area. We continued on past Venice Beach which was very wide, with lovely white sand, although a couple of streets back the housing and shops were very old and run down and from the...

Oct 6, 2017 - Halifax-Boston-Los Angeles

6/10/2017. Friday. Halifax to Los Angeles. Not a lot to report today. Canada, and Halifax in particular, really turned it on for us on our last day here - the sunrise was spectacular. And as we drove to the airport, and then from the air, the trees are well and truly dressed in red and orange. Such a wonderful sight. Saw a few of our group at breakfast, then it was on the shuttle bus to the airport and go, go, go from there. We had to go through Passport Control, and once we were on the other side, it's considered we were in America. Our...

Sep 26, 2017 - LA to Hong Kong

September 26, 2017. The next day we get to the airport in plenty of time, but I start to wonder whether the 12:55 departure time is AM or PM. We are acting as if it is PM. Panic again! But we shortly learn that it is PM and we are in good shape. Cathay Pacific is our airline to Hong Kong, and we are flying Business Class. This was a wonderful start to the trip. No issues with the plane, good food and drink and mostly comfortable pods. (I have discovered that I lack enough padding to sit for long distances). I had my first drinks since we...

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Sep 4, 2017 - Downtown Los Angeles

Had breakfast at the hotel, checked out and ordered Uber car to LA Airport. Left bags at the Embassy Hotel, bought a Hop On Hop Off ticket at the front desk and caught the Hop On Hop Off bus nearby at 11.30am. The system is, however, extremely difficult to navigate, with long waits and unmarked bus stops, so only managed to get to Venice Beach and Hollywood and Vine Walk of Fame. Very busy, crowded and noisy all day and quite hot. Caught the Hop On Hop Off bus diectly back to the hotel and checked in. Beautiful room with lounge and separate...

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Sep 3, 2017 - Return to Los Angeles

Missed breakfast on the train (ended eary because the train was 40 minutes ahead of time). Arrived in Los Angeles at 7.30am. Spent a couple of hours at Union Station - breakfast pancake and tried to sort out issues with Mastercard payment and Uber payments. Finally caught a Uber to the Travelodge hotel where I had booked for 2 nights, and found that it was far from the city, no public transpart and in a predominantlt Spanish-speaking area, and was going to be very difficult to link up with the Hop On Hop Off bus to tour the city. After...

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Aug 28, 2017 - Los Angeles and Long Beach

Our first few days on the big adventure! We started in LA and stayed with the loveliest of hosts Dan, Lisa, Henry and Charlie in Long Beach, and boy did they look after us! On the first day (Tuesday) we did Hollywood, seeing sights such as the Hollywood sign and the walk of fame. It was 44 degrees, so we didn't stick around too long here! We quickly headed to the beach at Santa Monica which was beautiful and full of weirdos, much more our thing. Finally it took us what felt like forever to reach Dan and Lisa, who treated us to some yummy...

Aug 15, 2017 - Australia to US

Train and bus to Melbourne airport for departure at 11.30am. Arrived at Los Angeles at 9.30am - 2 hours before I left Melbourne! Airport shuttle to hotel in El Segundo in LA. Big Latino area and fairly basic hotel. Too early to check in to wandered the streets nearby, bought a few things at a supermarket and had some lunch. Checked in and rested at the hotel (no sleep on the plane), re-organised luggage and watched TV (wall to wall Trump on CNN).

Eclipse Chasing 2017

Aug 7, 2017 - Los Angeles

So here we go with another travel journal. I have just realised that it was 10 years ago that I did the first one! This trip will mostly be in Western Canada but I am spending nearly a week in Altadena, with my very good friend Celinda. Altadena is part of Los Angeles. Celinda has a wonderful California bungalow and it is a great location to get over jet lag. An excellent recommendation for jet lag is a double margarita at Carnitas the absolute best Mexican Restaurant in the "World" I am totally not exaggerating. Yesterday Celinda and I...

Jul 27, 2017 - Pleasant evening in downtown LA

After checking in to the Omni Hotel, we walked over to the Otium Restaurant on Hope Street and had a great dinner. From there, we walked a couple of blocks to the Mark Taper Forum where we saw the play Heisenberg. Rita liked it a lot better than I did The whole thing consisted of a dialogue between two people.

Jun 13, 2017 - On To Asia

Perhaps you haven’t been following the situation in Qatar. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have accused Qatar of sponsoring terrorism, calling to mind the proverbial pot and kettle analogy. More likely, they are frustrated at the Emir of Qatar being a big supporter of the Arab Spring movement. As a king on a faction-divided and dangerous peninsula in the Middle East, a grass roots uprising is not something you are likely to endorse. So, the situation has boiled over into a blockade of the little country of Qatar. I’m told they are having to get...
