May 5, 2016 - Madera, CA - Madera Mobile Home RV Park

Our trip from Bakersfield to Madera, CA was a short 143 miles that only took a little over 2½ hours up the 99 through the Central Valley. Like most CA highways, there were good portions and teeth-rattling portions of that highway. I don't believe it is possible for the state to ever get their infrastructure back in good shape! About all we saw today was pistachio groves and vineyards with a few orange groves here and there. We believe most of the grapes grown in this region are used for raisins as the Sunmaid plant is along this route as...

Aug 28, 2015 - Friends & Big Trees

We moved just a short distance from Chowchilla to a few miles east of Madera at Hidden View CG at Hensley Lake. While we were in Montana and Wyoming we enjoyed the cool weather while our friends and family in Houston were suffering with the heat. We have now found the heat - the temperatures have been around 105 deg every afternoon and on our last day, while we were shopping in Fresno, the temperature hit 109. Our campground is another COE campground and is really nice. The lake is extremely low - now at 5000 acre feet vs a full pool of...

May 24, 2013 - Madera, CA - Country Living Mobile Home & RV Park

It was a pleasant 98 miles to Madera from Three Rivers, CA. We did have to feed the Mothership on the way at 3.999/gal. We needed 75 gallons this time for the 538 miles since the last fill-up in Arizona 12 days ago. Curiously the diesel in CA is usually very close to the price of unleaded regular gasoline? The trip was mostly along busy throughways so there are not many pictures of the trip. We are staying at the Country Living Mobile Home and RV Park which has a separate section of the property for RVs instead of mixing them in amongst...

Nov 17, 2012 - Thanksgiving Dinner At The Center

Today is the senior club monthly meeting and Thanksgiving dinner. The club supplies the turkey and all the members bring the remainder of the entrée's and deserts, as usual with all the good cooks there was a large variety and plenty of good food. Of course we played bingo before and after our meal , we made out like bandits with me winning the morning double jackpot plus our name was also drawn for a couple of the door prizes. It rained on and off last night and again today but around 4PM we had a torrential downpour with a little thunder...

Nov 16, 2012 - I'm jealous

Mary not feeling a 100% yet this morning but she is still determined to spend the day at the senior center. Ordered a new strap for my banjo to be delivered to the Sacramento Trane Parts Center so I will be picking it up next week. I've been making a push at getting my travel log caught up, two months down six to go. Mary came home after the morning bingo session still not feeling well. I'm jealous of how she can take an afternoon nap then go to bed and sleep all through the night.

Nov 15, 2012 - Pomegranates

I don't remember seeing so many pomegranate orchards when we lived here. Eating a pomegranate is kind of like eating crab, it's a lot of messy work to get at the good stuff, crab is worth the work not so much so for the pomegranate. I went into Fresno to pick up a couple of pizza' for lunch with the guys at Trane. Mary and Mary went into Fresno to do some shopping for the senior center Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. Mary got home about 5PM feeling sick and throwing up on the way home and after she got here, she said she thinks it might be...

Nov 14, 2012 - Still Hasn't Grasped The Concept

At Least I've been getting in more practice time on the banjo since we've been on the road, maybe not the two hours a day like I should but much more than I had been. Had the windshield replaced on the Cobalt for $165.00, I thought that was a pretty good price. The Senior Citizens Club is having their Thanksgiving dinner Saturday and everyone wanted us to stay for that so we won't be leaving for Sacramento now until Sunday. Three and a half years of being full time RV'ers and Mary still hasn't grasped the concept of how much is too much, I...

Nov 13, 2012 - A Need For Work

The last few days have been in the fifties but starting today in should be back into the sixties and seventies. It must be time to get back to work because I've noticed that I have to tug a little harder to get to that first notch on my belt lately. Put the bikes back on the rack this afternoon because the next few days are forecasted to have a good chance of rain.

Nov 12, 2012 - Left Hand Right Hand Thing Next

We had a pretty good rain during the night but it was a cold, chilly, frosty 26F when I went out for my walk at 6AM this morning. I've finally broke myself of the habit of watching my picking fingers when I play, now I'm working on getting my left hand to work in unison with my right hand. Fun day at the Senior Center today

Nov 11, 2012 - Mello Day

Today was a very laid back day, Mary made a large late breakfast. We went over to watch some of the fly ball dog competition, not sure who makes the most noise the owners? or the dogs? I took one of my rare afternoon naps today, I seen the beginning and the end of the NASCAR race from Phoenix but had a good nap in between. By 5PM it is already dark out so that by 7PM it seems like it should be 10 or 11PM

Nov 10, 2012 - Wine Doesn't Help

I think Madera should adopt the nickname of "The City of Crows". There is a fly ball dog competition going on here at the fairgrounds this weekend so I spent some time over there watching that, at the same time there were also some cars practicing at the Madera Speedway so I sat in on that for an hour or so. I still love the sound and smell of race cars at speed. It has been in the low fifties here for the last couple of days but today I managed to find a spot in the sun and out of the wind to get in a little practice on the banjo while...

Nov 9, 2012 - I've Said That Before

While Mary was at the senior Center playing bingo I stayed home and got a little work done around the coach and actually got about three weeks of my travel log updated so now I'm embarrassed to say that I'm only seven months behind, we have three weeks before we start at Napa Valley State Park so I'm going to try and get somewhere close to being caught up. This evening we went into Fresno for John Elvester retirement party, he was one of the service techs that I worked with at the Fresno office also gave us a chance to say hi to all of the...
