Jun 14, 2010 - U.S. Open -- checking it out

We got to the course around noon. Had to check out our shuttle bus from CSU in Monterey -- which worked very well. Very efficient operation. We walked around to the rest of the holes -- way out to 7-13 holes. Saw Zach Johnson, Furich, Perry and others. A little cool, but we walked over 6 miles going from hole to hole. No Tiger today. We were pooped at the end of the day. It's so cool on the holes near the ocean and at the end of the day. Only got up to 61 for the day, so when the sun goes down, it's chilly! Slept well!

Jun 13, 2010 - Moved to Moss Landing

Left the Park Sierra around 8:45 and arrived in Moss Landing around 1 p.m. Didn't even get things set up and we were on our way to Pebble Beach to exchange uniforms for Rick and start checking out the course. We saw Tiger on hole 15, so that was interesting. We didn't think he would be there on Sunday. Who knew. We got a tip from a camera guy. The course is awesome and quite challenging. The holes along the Pacific are something else. We left the course around 7 and then went to eat at Phil's Fish Market which is probably the most popular...

Jun 9, 2010 - Another trip to Yosemite

We went back into Yosemite to hike the Vernal Falls and Rick made it to the top. Got soaked! Too much of a challenge for me walking up the steps along the falls --yikes. He said there was a sign there saying that every couple of years a couple of people fall down the falls!!! Glad I didn't go! Also took more pics of the park; should be last trip in park. We were pooped again. Ate El Cid's nice Mexican restaurant.

Jun 25, 2009 - Moss Landing CA

When you're this close to the ocean, you just have to drive over to see the rugged coastline along the famed Highway 1, and we decided to also take in the 17 Mile Drive, Monterey, and Big Sur. Our first choice for a staging area was Marina Dunes RV park in Marina but...they never returned our call so we resorted to plan B, which was Moss Landing RV park, now a KOA. We stayed here 3 years ago and it is a nice clean park in an area where RV parks are few and far between. Friendly and helpful staff as well. Moss Landing is pretty much as we...

Jun 8, 2009 - Elkhorn Slough

Elkhorn Slough is one of California's largest wetlands. The reserve winds inland 7 miles and provides an important feeding and resting place for a fantastic variety of wildlife. As we launched our kayaks we immediately encountered at least a hundred harbor seals lying about the docks and sandy banks of the estuary. The cool wind cast a chop and a chill upon the water as we paddled about the harbor. We then encountered schools of much smaller and very cute and playful sea otters. They love to float outstreached upon their backs and...

Jun 7, 2009 - Moss Landing, CA

The drive to Moss Landing from Morro Bay is about 195 miles and took us about 3 hours. We followed the coastline north for about 25 miles and drank in the beauty before our eyes. The rolling surf, the sudden bursts of spray as they attacked the rugged rocks of the cliffs and the endless blue sky which merged with the deeper blue of the sea. Since the road began to narrow and twist, we had to leave US 1 and head inland to US 101 about 30 miles to continue our journey north. US 46 connects the two thoroughfares and we wound our way up and...

May 5, 2008 - Biking, bluegrass and seafood

At last, a sunny day! We were so excited we decided to do the coastal bike trail. It still felt pretty cold but with the sun shining it certainly was more enjoyable. We biked from our RV spot through downtown Monterey and Pacific Grove. The trail passes through Cannery Row so for lunch, we ate a burrito on the deck of a local hotel looking out over the water, watching sea otters play. After biking as far as we could on the beach route, we returned and stopped by the Monterey Aquarium for a visit. We spent a few hours there before biking...

Mar 25, 2008 - Moss Landing

Yesterday, we had a great trip up from Morro Bay to Moss Landing near Monterey. We drove the Pacific Coast Highway all the way and it was spectacular. Doing it in GG is just so much better because the views are fantastic. We had the Pacific Ocean on one side and dramatic cliffs on the other...wonderful. We didn't go and see Hearst Castle, which is a shame but time and money meant that it was not a top priority. We stopped lots of times to take photos en route, including one of elephant seals lying on the beach and drove over two fantastic...

Sep 17, 2007 - Moss Landing, CA

After Pat and Cliff left us in Petaluma, we drove south to Moss Landing, a small town just north of Monterey. To get to Moss Landing, we went directly through Castroville, which just happens to be the self-proclaimed artichoke center of the world. While we were there, we took the Jeep down to Big Sur for a day -- such a beautiful area. The Henry Miller Library is in Big Sur, which isn't actually a "library" in the strictest sense of the world, but more like a memorial/bookstore/coffee bar/ping pong table. Very unique! We also visited the...

Aug 23, 2007 - Monterey, California

We are staying in a small town named Moss Landing which is actually about 12 miles north of Monterey. The RV park backs the local marina. After setting up camp we had lunch at Phil's Fish Market, and we were glad we did. We both had artichokes and clam chowder, yum! After lunch we discovered several otters and a seal playing in the marina area and we really got a big kick out of these playful creatures who seemed to just love putting on a show. Thereafter we went to Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey and browsed the shops and watched the boats...

Aug 9, 2007 - Arrival in Monterey

We arrived Sunday, August 5th at our site for the next month. Moss Landing KOA RV Resort is a perfect spot for us! We are just 20 minutes from Derek in Monterey and our site is in a small park just off the Pacific Ocean. Climb over the sand dune and you are there. Cory arrived on the 4th of August in San Jose and we have spent the last five days touring Monterey and Salinas. We even squeezed in the Monterey Aquarium. Did you hear about the evacuation of the Aquarium this week? Well, we had just walked out of the facility when it happened!...

Mar 11, 2006 - We begin our retirement journey!

This visit to familiar surroundings at the Moss Landing RV Resort was primarily to give us a little rest and relaxation before departure on the great adventure. We were able to visit Phil's Fish House a couple of times. Nick and Denise Villa (friends from Alameda) came down for a visit and lunch before we left Moss Landing. The weather was still rainy and very cold with snow down to the low hills around Monterey. We have stayed at this park many times in the past, but this visit was enjoyable because we were no longer on vacation and...
