Oct 7, 2010 - Truckee, CA (Lake Tahoe)

We stopped here to visit Lake Tahoe. It's the second deepest lake in the US. Clear water and snow in the high mountains made for picture postcard scenes. We took a tour of Thunderbird Lodge-the summer home of George Whittell built in 1936. We also visited Donner Memorial State Park near the site where the Donner party got stranded in the winter of 1846 trying to cross the Sierra Nevada mountains to join the California gold rush. Of 89 people, only 47 survived the winter. The two nights we were there the low was 35 and this was early...

Sep 9, 2010 - Donner Lake

28 Degrees this morning! We left at 8AM to make the one hour drive to Truckee and Donner lake about 41 miles away. It was a spectacular drive of horseshoe turns and steep climbs to a narrow ridge broad enough only for a two lane highway with a drop on either side to Lake Tahoe a 1000 feet below. No sudden swerves here! I would never take the RV on this road! We then followed the west shore of Lake Tahoe north to Truckee,CA. We arrived at Lake Donner and launched at the west end on a sandy beach. The temperature was now about 52 degrees and...

Jun 26, 2010 - On Our Way To Vegas

We left the Mendocino campground yesterday morning and headed east to Truckee for the night. I have to admit, I am not sorry to be leaving the roads we have been driving the last week or so. It seems they measure everything in air miles rather than actual, so with all the turns and such, it takes over an hour to go 40 miles. On our way east we passed through some redwoods but the road was narrow and we had very little turn off space so not photos. I am still fight a very sloppy head cold and everyone, including the cats, dogs and myself...

Jun 3, 2010 - Truckee

Over the last three days we have seen some beautiful areas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, had Clyde’s oil changed in Stockton, eaten enough fresh cherries from the roadside fruit stands to burst, and are now settled in for the night in Truckee at the Coachland RV Park. Thankfully, after those 11 days of recovering in Coarsegold, Will’s back seems to be doing fine now that we are back on the road. Part of our drive today took us through Donner Pass where we saw plenty of snow still glistening on the ground. We even saw one snow recreation...

Oct 14, 2009 - Trip 13: Coachland RV Resort, Truckee, CA

The Truckee area has some great bike trails, so we decided to get up there before the weather got too cold, we left 100 degree Sacramento on Friday for an 80 degree Truckee. The Coachland resort is well kept but has a majority of permanent residents and other than the premium slots, you are packed against your neighbors. But it has one major amenity: it is in Truckee! We got the trailer set up and then headed out on the bikes; there is a new planned development nearby with bike trails throughout. We realized quickly that we were at 6,000...

May 24, 2009 - Tahoe: Prey Meadow and Skunk Cove

On our last day at Tahoe, we hiked to Skunk Cove (not certain of the origin of this name) and along Prey Meadow. I think the light was better on this day to capture the colors of the Tahoe water. The stone building is at the end of the hike and was built by someone from San Francisco as a "picnic house." It is larger than our house at Sugarloaf!

Dilsea's Road Trip

May 23, 2009 - Lake Tahoe

We spent Memorial Day Weekend at Lake Tahoe. Memorial Day is not our favorite weekend for travel. The highways are crazy, the parks are crowded and noisy. Fortunately, this year we ended up in a quiet and sane RV park located in Truckee, on the north end of Lake Tahoe. We did a series of day trips around the lake, as well as one 3-mile hike from a mountainside down to the shore (and back!). Tahoe is a beautiful, although crowded, lake. It is 22 miles long and 13 miles wide, with a never ending series of small coves. The water is very clear...

Dilsea's Road Trip

Sep 29, 2008 - All Things Truckee...

Cleaning the Johns and thinking of you…. I was power-washing the concrete vaults of the restrooms recently at Martis Creek Lake campground in Truckee and realized I hadn’t talked to you lately…or to a number of you, anyway. And since we leave next week for Montana (at last!), I thought to take this chance to get you caught up on our adventures, such as they’ve been. This little interlude in Truckee as Camp Hosts hasn’t been wildly exciting…maybe that’ s why I haven’t written much earlier…but there have been a few interesting moments, and...

Sep 6, 2008 - Truckee, Ca

Moved on to Truckee, Ca which is 13 miles North of Lake Tahoe, and 1 of the only RV parks large enough for us, most of the others have a 30ft length limit, so here we stopped. Drove to the lake it is beautiful, even felt the water, could even enjoy a swim if we were going to be around. Drove down the east coast looking at all the beautiful big homes on and off the water, money - money - money. Turned around and drove to Incline Village, NV. Ended up at the Hyatt Casino, actually left a little ahead this time. On to Reno tomorrow.

Jul 21, 2008 - Loooong day of boring driving

After leaving Salt Lake City, we spent a long, boring day driving before we arrived at Kathy’s aunt and uncle’s house in Truckee, CA, close to Lake Tahoe. Unlike South Dakota, the drive across northern Nevada has no interesting signs except “Please pull over if drowsy.” (Don’t worry, moms, we took turns driving.) Perhaps we wouldn’t be so drowsy if you made your highway more interesting! We suggest brightly colored signs with interesting pictures and sayings. Kathy was trying to convince Bonnie to open up the Walldrug equivalent in...

Jun 4, 2008 - EFI

OhmyGAWD....That was genuinely tough! We departed Auburn around 7:00 after not one but two Grand Slams from Denny's. Weather forcast was for temps in the 40's at Auburn and 30's at Truckee. We emerged at 5:30 to load our gear and found it already in the 50's so everyone started shedding clothing with the promise that we could get them prior to the descent. By 8:30 when the serious climbing started it was in the 60's and we were glad we did. Multiple short climbs of 12-16% resulting in a relatively rapid gain of 3500 of our needed 9000 feet...

"Retirement" Journey

Dec 29, 2007 - 2007 Final Chapter - Family At Tahoe Cabin

The weather in Sacramento had turned cold and sloppy which is not conducive to motorhome living. Patches of mildew were sprouting in dark places and we amused ourselves with browsing the Weather Channel for Caribbean locations and doing a bit of complaining! O.K. Beth and Chris (of Kauai timeshare fame), what can you pull out of the hat this year? We had a wonderful Christmas Eve and Day with Stevi and Gary. On Christmas Eve she fixed a tasty fondue spread with dips and candies and cookies, homemade, of course, and had a few friends over....
