Apr 22, 2018 - Brunswick, GA

Brunswick, Georgia Sunday April 22 - Wednesday April 25, 2018 Monday afternoon we visited Brunswick’s historic downtown. Lots of vintage buildings, Victorian homes and a plethora of pocket parks. Stone blocks of the town’s original buildings are integrated in the pocket park’s landscaping and fountains. Huge live oak trees canopy the streets and provide shade for strolling shoppers. On the way back to our RV park Monday afternoon we passed by the port of Brunswick which can handle 800,000 vehicles a year. The port is filled with thousands...

Spring Trip 2018

May 22, 2017 - Quiet in Brunswick

We had a leisurely start to the day. First up was breakfast in the dining room - we met Jack and partner Matthew who run the B&B - they were very friendly and hospitable. It was a lovely breakfast - a fruit compote, followed by a potato frittata with local relish, and some tea ( yippee said C). Jack sat and talked with us and regaled us with stories from his life, all delivered with his Georgia accent. It was hilarious. We told him he needed to write a book, and we would buy it. P then took us out for a walk around the streets - amazing...

May 21, 2017 - Rainy night in Georgia

Today we travelled across 5 States! We packed up and checked out, then walked a couple of blocks to a French bakery called Cafe d'Or where we had coffee and raisin pastries. It was very nice and the building ornate with painted floral cornices. Then we headed out on a long 1000km (approx) journey to Brunswick in Georgia. It started raining very soon and was very heavy for a while. We soon slowed to a crawl and passed by a smashed car with police, ambulance and fire truck. The countryside gradually changed as we headed east, with the road...

Jan 19, 2017 - Brunswick and Mayo

Well, it has been a couple weeks since I posted, and that is because my Surface Pro decided to take a dump and refused to let me connect to the internet. I tried everything and even thought that my Verizon Jetpack was the problem. We took a trip to the Verizon store in Brunswick, and despite the best efforts of the sales-chick to get me to upgrade to a post-pay plan, I just didn’t fall for it. We stopped at “Network Monkeys” in Brunswick on Wednesday to see if they could fix my Surface Pro, but they couldn’t guarantee it would be ready...

2017 Life in our RV

May 17, 2016 - Georgia Coastal

We spent three days in Brunswick GA exploring the coastal barrier islands. Jekyll Island, now a state park, was a winter playground for the very rich (think Vanderbilts etc.). They shipped in their entire families, staff, and play things during the months of Jan through April every year. Started in the 1880s they would take the train to Jacksonville FL and then sail up to the GA coast. The rich folks abandoned the island in 1942 when German Uboats were reported offshore. Also, on the island is the location of the last slave ship whose...

Apr 9, 2016 - Brunswick, Jekyll Island and St. Simon Island, GA

We stayed at Golden Isles RV Park near Brunswick, GA for two nights. It is off Exit 29 of I-95 and though close to the highway, you really don’t hear highway noise. The park is somewhat tired with really old RVs still occupied full time but the people who run the park were very nice and moved us when we just couldn’t fit into the space originally assigned. Note to self...don’t go south this time of year again. The weather has been lovely but all the Florida and southern snowbirds are heading north for the summer and so the campgrounds are...

Bayou Bound

May 5, 2015 - Brunswick, Georgia

Happy Cinco de Mayo. Today we play with the Gopro. John gets the motorcycle out. We ride to St. Simon’s Island. There is no reason to visit St. Simon's Island but I play with turning the Gopro on and off. We ride to the marina where we went fishing a few years ago. To get there we have to go on the interstate. I resist hitting John’s helmet and yelling STOP. We arrive at the marina. Our captain does not charter here anymore. He is on St. Simon’s Island! Back at Mick’s, I play with the Gopro footage. There is always a learning curve with any...

May 4, 2015 - Brunswick, Georgia

We wake to the sound of the ocean. This is good. We get an early start. It is five hours to Brunswick, Ga. I have my doubts that we can make this in one day. We fill the gas tank and head south on Route 17. At Charleston, we get on the beltway. The first sign we see tells us that there is an “incident” ahead. All lanes are blocked. Fifty minutes later, we are on the move again. After a lunch break, we get on I95. It is a long run but we are determined to make it to Brunswick. We arrive at 3:30. We visit with our friend Merv. It is time to...

Apr 23, 2015 - Brunswick, GA

FINALLY – we escaped Tampa and Lazy Days!!!!! We are excited to be back on the road and heading to New England and Canada for the summer. Our stop for the first night is Brunswick, GA. And this sure brought back some memories as this was our first stop just after we got the coach – in fact we even were on the same site. We can tell you, this was a heck of a lot easier drive than the first time – the 18 wheelers don’t scare me when they pass, and we were not being battered by Tropical Strom Debbie this time. We now have the Harley so we...

Cat Nap Inn 2015

Apr 22, 2015 - On the move

We left Zephyrhills Monday about noon and by that time it was close to 90°. Oh what I would have done for a quick dip in the pool! But alas, it was not to be. Gary managed to pull a rabbit out of his hat and get the RV with the trailer attached turned around on our narrow dead end street and we were on our way! The seats were installed and we finally got the step carpeting installed also. It looks marvelous! One of our fellow campers from Michigan talked Gary into taking Route 301 north into Georgia instead of following I-95. What a...

Apr 10, 2015 - Moving on Up

Time to begin the trip north. Bill took the car up first and had another nice visit with the grandchildren before flying back to Jacksonville. He spent the night with Wende and Lee, returning Wednesday in time for a final dip in the Ortega pool. We left early the next day and the ride out the St Johns was smooth on an ebb tide. Our first order of business was to pick up some fuel at Port Consolidated in Fernandina near the Florida-Georgia border. Willi the attendant was on station and quickly dispatched us along the way. That first night...

2014-15 Adventures

Mar 1, 2015 - coastal GA

80º temperatures returned to central Florida, but we chose today to leave. So did many other rigs. It's the weekend and February is over so theoretically conditions are right for some of us to return home. Our departure was far from auspicious. We barely left the campsite and hooked up the car and bad things started happening. Given the fact that we have made numerous changes during the six weeks we were here, there were many variables to sort out as the alarms sounded. Most disappointing was the fact that the professionals who installed...
