Sep 30, 2011 - All Work and No Play...
We have been enjoying ourselves here in Michigan, but it is starting to get colder and we are about ready to head for warmer climates. There was frost a couple of mornings, but the days have generally warmed up to the low to mid 60’s. We hear this “heat wave” will probably end any day now. To catch you up on the saga with our leveling jacks, they are still not fixed but I think we are getting closer to the final solution. We did have to bring the unit back down to Camping World to have the inspector from the warranty company take a look at...Jump to full entry
Sep 9, 2011 - And the Saga Continues...
We have been here in Hillman almost a month, and are having a great time. The people are very friendly, the golf course is beautiful, the work is interesting, and the weather has been just lovely. There have been a few glitches to work through but all in all it has gone very well. Buzz worked with Mike, the greens superintendent, and set up a schedule where he gets in all his required hours by working just Friday, Saturday, & Sunday; he rolls the greens one day, mows them the weekend mornings, picks and mows the range and marshalls the...Jump to full entry
Aug 18, 2011 - Thunder Bay Golf & RV Resort
Well, we are finally here. So let me explain where we “here” is and what we are doing. Here is Hillman, Mi which is about halfway between Gaylord & Alpena, neither of which you have heard of either. It is south of Mackinaw City and inland from Lake Huron, and pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The reason we are here is to “workamp”; workamping is working at a resort, rv park, national or state or county park, amusement park, or any other facility in exchange for a free site including utilities and sometimes pay. Time period can vary from...Jump to full entry
Jul 14, 2010 - Preparing To Hit The Road
Today was very busy preparing for our move to Ishpeming tomorrow. It is about a 250-mile trip with hardly any freeway so we plan on leaving here at least by 8:00 in the morning. Roger did all the things he always does like checking the tire pressure and making sure everything on the outside is stowed away properly. I finished packing up everything on the inside and then went to town to fill up the car with gas. While I was out I came across a truck with a sign that said fresh sweet corn. Well, I just had to stop and see. Sure enough, the...Jump to full entry
Jul 13, 2010 - Busy Day And Saying Good Bye
Our day started quite early this morning with our usual coffee, then showers and clean clothes. We had a number of things we wished to accomplish today and we did it all. First, we changed the bed linens and I washed and dried a couple of loads of clothes. Then, I set up the ironing board and ironed all the clothes that I washed yesterday. All these chores were finished by 10:30 and we were ready to go to town for another adventure. Today we had plans to tour the Besser Museum in Alpena. They have quite an extensive "Life and Times"...Jump to full entry
Jul 12, 2010 - Rafting On Thunder Bay River
We sure did have an exciting adventure today. Around 9:00 we joined Howard, Barb, Butch and Rob for a raft trip down the Thunder Bay River. It was a cloudy morning and looked like it could rain so we dressed accordingly and I made sure to take my waterproof Gore-Tex jacket. Jack, the owner of Thunder Bay Resort, drove us in a van to the put-in spot and after donning life vests, we were on our way down the river. What a fantastic adventure! The river is quite high right now so we floated very nicely. Several of the work campers at the Resort...Jump to full entry
Jul 11, 2010 - A Week Of Fun
This past week has been very busy with get-togethers with the RV Dreamers and our solo excursions and we are having a wonderful time. It is just what we have needed to help us deal with our loss of Heidi. We still think of her every day but with time, we know it will become less painful. Roger and I have lived in Michigan all our lives but have never really explored the northeastern side of our state. There is a whole lot more to do and see than we ever imagined. One day we went to the Great Lakes NOAA Maritime Heritage Center, which was...Jump to full entry
Jul 10, 2010 - Thunder Bay Resort
We left Haas Lake last Saturday morning and drove 210 miles up to Hillman, Michigan. It was the first time I followed Roger while he drove the truck and RV and I drove the car. It was an easy trip and we only stopped once to get out and stretch our legs. We arrived here in the afternoon and Howard and Linda were both here to greet us as we pulled into our site. It sure was nice to meet them after following their blog all these years. Of course right about 5:00 we all met in the Pavillion for Happy Hour where Jim and John were hard at work...Jump to full entry
Jul 30, 2008 - Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort, Michigan!
Leaving Frankenmuth Tuesday morning, we followed I-75 to Rt 23 and followed the Lake Huron coast. As in California, there are only a few places where water actually comes in view along the highway, but the back road was worth it. Lots of little towns slowed us down -- not like driving the interstates that get you there fast -- but, hey! Who's in a hurry?? Well, actually, by this time, we kind of were! We've been anxious to get to this golf resort for weeks! Jim had read about it on-line and fell in love with the idea of stay-and-play....Jump to full entry
Jul 24, 2008 - Long Lake, MI
Thunder Bay RV & Golf Resort, Hillman, MI. (20 min. from Alpena, which is on Thunder Bay--part of Lake Huron.) "Resort" is not an understatement; this is definitely not your typical RV park. Situated next to the golf course (yes, we were warned to watch out for stray shots), this place has wrought-iron table & chairs at each site and perfectly level asphalt--an RVer's dream. The 23 sites are spaced fairly far apart and only half a dozen are occupied. The latter probably a reflection of the sorry state of Michigan's economy. We're here to...Jump to full entry
