Aug 22, 2019 - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

2019-08-22. Traverse City, Michigan Before waxing poetic about the beauty of Great Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore, a word about camping in state or local fairgrounds. We have stayed at many different fairgrounds on this trip. Check ahead of time for when the events are happening at the fairgrounds, but if there are no events, you may have the place to yourself at low cost but with at least electric and a dump station and often, water as well. Yesterday, we spent the night in the Upper Peninsula State Fair Grounds ("Upstate") in...

Aug 17, 2019 - Boondocking at the winery

We are implementing a slightly different tact on campground expenses. Often we can get discounted camping during the week (Sun through Thursday) while the weekends cost more. So this time we relied on the Harvest Host program to reduce overall cost. We can park free in many wineries and farms. This time we checked out a couple for Friday and Saturday. Then we went to a more upscale resort on Sunday.

Aug 1, 2019 - August

The first week of August was pretty quiet, except for the dress rehearsal of our choral group on Monday night and then our performances on Thursday and Friday nights. Both concerts went really well and we had a lot of fun. I got to sing a solo from Les Miserables, which I really enjoyed doing. I also got an invitation to sing at a charity concert after the coordinator heard me sing. What a nice compliment. Unfortunately, it’s after we leave for home, so I had to decline the invitation. That said… we decided pretty early in the month not to...

Jul 1, 2019 - July at our summer home

After a wet and cool June, July finally started to feel like summer with warmer days and less rain. The end of June and beginning of July started with the National Cherry Festival. We went twice, the first time to see the Thunderbirds and go to the craft fair and the second time to take a tour of the cherry fields where lots of agricultural testing is done by Michigan State University. In addition to learning a lot about growing cherries we also got to taste lots of cherry treats. Wow! Unfortunately, though, due to a cold spring, cherry...

May 30, 2019 - Traverse City, MI - our summer home

We drove about 90 minutes north on U.S. 131 to Kalkaska and then headed west toward Lake Michigan. About 2 miles from the coast, we found our summer home, Traverse Bay RV Resort. We booked this RV resort for the summer back in January and although it looked great on the web site, we weren’t positive what we were really going to find. Given that this place was more expensive than most, we were really hoping for a nice RV park with activities and nice people. Well, as we drove in, our fears were put aside. The entrance was beautiful, lined...

Aug 30, 2018 - Sleeping Bear natl seashore

We woke up late after a nice cool night and Jean made us the best blueberry pancakes ever! We walked about 2 miles around the campground which is huge. We took a drive over to Sleeping Bear seashore and did the Pierce strong highway to see the dunes and Lake Michigan. We stopped at the big dune which goes practically straight down to the water- looked like about 1/4 mile. Bill decided he had to do it after we heard a woman who had just come back up it in 13 minutes. He did it down and back in about 35 minutes- probably a record for a 66...

We met up with our neighbors from Georgia at the Holiday Park campground outside of Traverse city and got a site next to them. They spend 3 months up here and we wanted to see them and the area. It's pretty up here and cool- about 60. We're going to stay another day and drive over to see Sleeping Bear natl seashore tomorrow.

Jul 31, 2017 - Traverse City

Our GPS almost took us right past our stop at the Travers Bay RV Resort but fortunately I spotted it as we went by on route 72. We are now set up in one of the prettiest parks in which we have stayed. We are paying a high rate for the privilege. Traverse Bay RV Resort is beautiful and would get our highest rating if only they had good internet. Unfortunately, there is rarely serviceable internet at our site. Soon after we arrived, I figured out that we were here during the Traverse City Film Festival. We have seen only one film since...

On Saturday our group traveled to Frankfort a small town on one of the lakes, for the farmers market. Lots of local fruits and veggies, I found a vendor doing gluten free baked goods and granola, baked goods were delish!! The town was also having a street sale, street closed off and local shops put up tables with all kinds of bargins, some came home with bags full others like myself bought a couple of nice knit tops. After lunch we went to Point Betsie, for a view of the lighthouse and walk on the beach, some looked for Petoskey rocks...
