Over breakfast, we discuss our plans for today. Much depends on the weather and the weather is great. Get the bike out. The Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is an hour north of Scottsbluff. I get out the GPS and plan our route. We leave the RV Park. We get as far as the first intersection. John asks, “Wouldn’t it be better . . .?” I answer him, “Yup” We ignore the GPS. The huge yellow buttes rise out of the prairie floor. This is the area of Agate Fossil Beds. In 1887 rancher Cook, who owned the property, discovered vast fossil beds. The bones had been buried 19-20 million years ago. This is an extensive bed of fossils with many trails to follow. The visitor’s center also has an extensive display of Sioux and Cheyenne artifacts. Cook was a great friend to Red Cloud. Red Cloud gave Cook 100’s gifts of clothing and tools over many years. Cook greatly respected the Indians and became their government...
