Aug 31, 2019 - Downtown Omaha

While camped at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, we drove back to Omaha to take a ride on River City Star Riverboat on the Missouri River touring Omaha's riverfront. When we got there we heard about the big flood along the Missouri. In the early spring of 2019, the powerful forces of nature swept across the heartland to create flooding of epic proportions along the Missouri River basin. A “cyclone bomb” brought torrential rains and snow which hit frozen ground. The flooding that followed was devastating, affecting much of our River City Star...

Jul 31, 2019 - Day 19

Today is the day we depart Chicago on our train ride to San Francisco. Cheryl and I are really looking forward to this segment of the trip. We started the day at about 8:30, going down to breakfast. At this hotel I was entitled to free breakfast for Cheryl and I. The hotel itself did not have the usual breakfast area, but there was a restaurant attached to the hotel which provided the service. We were able to order whatever we wanted off the regular menu, and it was really good. Yesterday I was able to get the omelet with all the trimmings,...

Oct 6, 2017 - Our EVENTFUL journey home

Omaha, NE Jim is still on a high from all the congratulations and thank you’s he got for “saving” the trip for us by finding an alternate route to Estes Park when we were told the road was closed. It is hard for him to give that up and say farewell to our fellow travelers as they all scatter to various parts of the country: Texas, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Michigan and Indiana. We are the only ones from Nebraska and, apparently, the only ones to arrive and depart by train. Thus, we were almost the last to...

Sep 12, 2017 - Ya Gotta Be Flexible Redux!

Stopped at a Firestone store first thing to have my tire fixed. I apparently pick up a piece of metal somewhere along the way. In and out w/ in an hour or so didn't really impact the day since I arrived at the Durham Museum at 9:45, 15 minutes before opening. The museum is in their old train station, Union Station. Fabulous building. This is an excellent museum that covers all things Omaha...origin, growth, business, etc. There is even a display area about Omaha Steaks. Also some train history including 3 or 4 different types of train cars...

Sep 11, 2017 - Ya Gotta Be Flexible

Up and out by 8:30. Original plan for today revolved around the Durham Museum. However, when I was verify things last night, I discovered it is closed in Mondays, apparently after Labor Day. So I went to Boys Town first thing this morning which was actually on the itinerary for tomorrow. I was aware of the organization, had heard of Father Flannigan, and knew it originated in Omaha. I drove/walked around the campus, then spent most of my time in the Hall of History watching a film and visiting the museum. Yesterday my "low tire pressure"...

Aug 21, 2017 - Eclipse Day

Had to get up at 5.30am for breakfast at 6am and board the Eclipse Bus at 6.40am. Travelled for a couple of hours to Beatrice, picking up a few other people along the way. Arrived at Homestead park about 10am - a large heritage site managed by National Parks commemorating "homesteaders", the original settlers in the area. Very busy site - approximately 10,000 people, food vans, TV vans, telescopes, talks by rangers and activities for children. The Homestead Museum was also open - very interesting displays about the life of early...

Aug 14, 2017 - Travel from Moscow, IA to Omaha, NE

August 14 – Travel to Moscow, IA and Omaha, NE Our motorhome leveling/stabilizing system was inspected this morning at HWH in Moscow, IA. The technician calibrated the leveling control a small amount. No hydraulics problems were found. We then headed west in the rain across Iowa and enjoyed viewing the seas of corn and soybeans fields from horizon to horizon. We camped at an Omaha KOA and enjoyed diner delivered to the motorhome from the KOA kitchen. Tomorrow, Tuesday, we are heading west to visit our friends, Rich and Carol Deardorff, in...

Aug 2, 2017 - Omaha NE – Lake Cunningham Campground

Back in Omaha to visit with family. We got to hook up with niece, Michaela, who was in town from Buckeye AZ on vacation. Theresa (sister-in-law) and Jack (brother) had us over to dinner one night. Theresa made chicken cordon bleu for dinner and Jack got a luscious Village Inn pie for dessert so we ate well. Played a rousing game of Mexican Train dominoes. Kayla scored a big come from behind win. I think she cheats (NOT!). Why did we ever teach her that game??? Got to see nephew, John, his wife, Carol and kids AJ and Sara while we were in...
