Aug 28, 2008 - Day 83 - Johnstown to Binghamton, NY

Headed to Jon and Debbie's around 8:30 to pick up the RV. Got hooked up, said our goodbyes and was back on the road at 9 for our 254 mile drive. The weather was crappy - cold and raining! But the drive turned out to be very routine and uneventful. Passed the 15,000 mile milestone as we passed Owego, NY. Lots of windshield time over the summer. Checked in at the campground, got set up and headed out to find a close grocery store. Called the munchkins for our grand kid fix. Headed back to the RV, putzed around and had dinner. Found that we...

Jul 22, 2008 - Back to the Old Stomping Ground

We've had a very busy 8 days walking, riding, driving down Memory Lane. Unless you are from the Binghamton area, you might want to skip this entry, but it will be in a bright color to maybe hold your interest better. We visited old friends we grew up with and went to high school with - grduating in 1966. We wandered the halls of Susquehanna Valley High School, where we first met, and drove around the area. We were shocked to discover there had been a major flood in that area (Conklin) in 2006 and our old school had been used as an airlift...

Jun 24, 2008 - Leaving Pennsylvania

Today we hitched up and headed to New York. Usually I am anxious to move on to the next destination. But today I was a little sad to leave. I have really enjoyed being at Strasburg. I think it is the farmland—that sense of being back to the earth, to a time gone by. Some folks might not find the farm life appealing, but I have always been intrigued by the ability to be so independent. I have wonderful memories of the many, many months I spent as a child on my grandparents farm—feeding the chickens and gathering the eggs, picking tomatoes...

Jun 13, 2008 - Joe's Roots - Port Crane, NY

We spent a day finding many places around Port Crane that Joe knew as a child. It's always amazing how little things change up north. If a building in Florida gets over 20 years old, they are ready to tear it down and build a new one. Up here, they just remodel old homes and commercial buildings.

May 14, 2008 - Departing from Binghamton

The day began with Nadine leading her Wednesday Morning Bible Study group at church, while Mark finished up some last-minute items in his office. When the study was over, the Bible study group reconvened in the church parking lot, where they popped the corks on a couple of bottles of (non-alcoholic) champagne. Then they gave Rosie (our Roadtrek camper van) a proper christening by pouring champagne on one of Rosie's front tires. Then, after a round of hugs, we were off! Our goal for the day was to get past Cleveland OH, so that we wouldn't...

Jan 8, 2008 - Return Home

Today is election day, and none of the candidates had any event listings on the Union Leader Web site (doubtless they'll be covering as much ground as they can, though). We decided to head back home to Binghamton in order to watch the returns. Since we weren't committed to any candidate, we felt a bit uncomfortable about "crashing" a victory party. [We learned later that all of the victory parties had smaller crowds than expected; they probably would have been glad to have us boost their numbers. Something to remember for 2012!) In the end,...

Sep 14, 2007 - Media Day - Binghamton, NY

Morning dawned cloudy, cool and threatening rain that never appeared. Phil has a nasty cold, so we just enjoyed hanging out at the campground, doing a few chores (mostly cleaning up the Roadtrek for the media appearances today!), and talking to the media. The local CBS affiliate WBNG (#1 in the market) came out to talk to us and we did a fun interview with them. FOX was scheduled to come by, but never showed. At 5 pm we were due at the ABC affiliate - WNIZ to do a live interview that they have "teased" for a day or so. It was a bit chaotic,...

Jan 8, 2007 - Brooklyn, NEW YORK

Monday 8th The day began for Lesley and I when the ship passed the Ambrose Tower and we were joined by the pilot boat which positioned itself under our cabin window. We sailed under the Verizzano Bridge around 5.00hrs and had docked by 07.50hrs. All the kitchen and restaurant staff were extremely tense as the ship awaited its annual coastguard inspection. Because of this breakfast was poor, we were late disembarking and the ship was late setting off in the evening. If the Seven Wonders of the World were experiences and not places, then...

Jul 6, 2006 - Syracuse, NY Turning Stone

Well we are back at Turning Stone. We told the Boomer's how nice it was here and we decided that it was a good place to rest up after the activities of the 4th and plot our course for the summer. We had a nice dinner and the next day Toni and I checked out the local TJMax/Homegoods store, it only took us 4 hours to look at everything in the store!

Jun 28, 2006 - Stranded in Sydney, New York

June 28, 2006 Stranded in Sydney, New York. As I sit here this beautiful evening in New York, I find it hard to fathom that we are in the middle of a "State of Emergency." This incident is catching the notice of the whole United States with regular updates on CNN News. We even had a fly over by the Governor of this state to assess the damage and destruction to this area. We first learned that there was a problem when we left Niagara Falls this morning. The Thruway to Albany was closed due to high water because of all the rain, so we...

Feb 6, 2006 - Goodbye Vermont/Hello New York

Had an early start to the day..a quick breakfast of bagels and cream cheese...we were on the road by 8am heading for New York...we were able to contact Amanda Murphy and met up with her at 2pm in Utica New York where we had a wonderful lunch and visit. At that point we had to decide which direction to go. We had contemplated heading for Niagra Falls however it was snowing heavy as we headed into Utica. So after getting the weather report, hearing from Amanda that the Canadian side of the falls is preferred and not wanting to head into a...
