Jun 25, 2018 - No engine, No problem

They couldn't keep me down.... After a rainy weekend we went back to Harris Hill Soaring to take a ride on a glider. A perfect day with winds from the north at 10-12 kts, blue skies and green lights all around. The winds were ideal in that they hit the ridge at just the right angle to provide great lifting currents. The pilot told me that he could stay airborne all day long if he wanted to. My $100 was only good for 20 minutes though (I think it was longer than that though, maybe 30 minutes) It was an interesting place in that the entire...

Jun 22, 2018 - Soaring Museum near Elmira

Elmira is considered the soaring capital of the world (or maybe country, or possibly Chemung County NY). We watched as several sail planes were launched, soared around and finally landed. We found that you can catch a ride for $100 and I was excited to try that (Patti, not so much). But first we went through the museum. By the time we finished the cloud ceiling had lowered to the point where they were no longer flying, rats. Hope to return to try it out.

Sep 9, 2008 - Canada to USA (Ramada Inn – Niagara Falls [Canada] to Holiday Inn - Elmira)

Today started off very well. But the end was a nightmare. We got up and decided to try to find a reasonable costing healthy breakfast, and in fact we did. A local café did a breakfast sandwich and coffee or tea for about CA$6. And the sandwich was made in front of you from fresh produce. We had had lunch at the place yesterday and had had a good laugh with the waiting staff, who struggled a little with our accents. We gave them a hard time and got it right back. We carried on the banter today and it was all well received. The owner of the...

Sep 2, 2008 - England to United States of America (Channins Hounslow Hotel – Hounslow to Holiday Inn - Elmira)

It is 4:20 am. Shit! We managed to sleep in this morning. Only about 20 minutes but enough to make us panic. Sleep was just not to be had as I tossed and turned all night. Typical that sleep happened when we least wanted it to. We raced to get showered, dressed, loaded and away. Wonderful. As we head out of the door it is absolutely bucketing down. Heavy surface flooding and heavy rain. Just what we wanted as we carry our bags the one and a half kilometres or so to the bus. We are so glad to be leaving this shit hole! (That is the hotel...

May 29, 2007 - New York State and heading home!

Well, our trip is drawing to a close! And what an adventure it has been. We spent two quick nights, one in a hotel and one in Western NY before we landed at our favorite camping spot in Erin, NY near Lisa's hometown of Elmira and Aunt Beth. Because we arrived when everyone else was leaving (on Memorial Day Monday), we were able to reserve our favorite site. Park Station is situated on the top of an almost mountain in the middle of almost no where, but is beautiful and the waterfront sites are giant, wooded and have green lawn down to the...
