Jul 15, 2018 - Day 6

Today started with breakfast at a place called Ambition on a pedestrian mall in Schenectady. Good meal. We headed for Howe Caverns, arriving less than an hour later. Cheryl has said that she went there in 1964. Obviously didn't make a large impression. She remembered very little. We went on the tour with about 20 other folks. The tour starts with an elevator ride down 163 feet...roughly 16 stories. We stepped out into the starting point really glad we brought sweatshirts. Upstairs it was 84 degrees. Down here about 50 degrees. We walked...

Jul 14, 2018 - Day 5

Today started out with breakfast at the B&B. Our plan was to travel to Howe Caverns and stay near there this evening. We found a Doubletree hotel in Schenectady, about 25 miles from Howe Caverns. We arrived at the Doubletree near time for lunch. We also adjusted our plan to relax today and see the caverns tomorrow. We also planned to stay an extra night, and drive to Cooperstown (our next stop) from there, a little over an hour drive. When we went into downtown Schenectady we first happened on an area that seemed to be in the process of...

Jun 21, 2018 - Riding the Rails

Not a lot to write about today as it was mainly a travel day. We had breakfast at the apartment, cleaned things up and were out the door at 11am. Jef had gone out earlier to visit the Mass Gen Hospital Museum that we'd seen on our walk to the T each day. He'd come back quite enthused about it and thought we'd like it as well. Since we didn't have to be at South Station to catch the Amtrak until 12:30, we all stopped by the museum. The volunteer Dr docent was very passionate about the museum and wanted to make sure Kayla and Colin got a...

Sep 14, 2016 - Schenectady New York

What a beautiful day for a drive. We left the campground around 9 am but needed a stop at the local Walmart. There are not many in this part of the country. Our drive today was to Schenectady NY to spend the night at Arrowhead Marina & RV Park. The campground is located right on the river so it was a nice view. This is just drive and park type day, didn’t leave the campground after we arrived.

2016 New England

Aug 8, 2016 - Pooka

"From old celtic mythology; A fairy spirit in animal form, always very large. The Pooka appears here and there, now and then, to this one and that one. A benign but mischievous creature. Very fond of rum pots, crack pots, and how are you Mr. Wilson?" -Harvey, 1950 My next jump was to West Virginia. As has become my custom, after I setup my camp site, I went to the grocery store, the nearest of which is a Walmart. There was a teenage girl in the parking lot selling baby bunnies. I checked inside the Walmart and they sold all of the...

Jul 31, 2016 - Go West Young Man

Having spent four months in New England, it’s time to head out on new explorations of our glorious country. My first year as a full-time tourist was basically random with extremely little advance planning. I had a rough plan of making a long counter-clockwise loop from New England to South Dakota, Texas, Florida and back to New England. And, that’s exactly what I did. Along the way, I would find and visit whatever was fascinating locally. Even though I’ve traveled extensively for my entire life, I was still amazed that there was always...

Sep 27, 2015 - New York

I guess you have noticed that we have had no pictures of beautiful fall colors, leaves and things. Everybody says its because it has been so dry this year. Doesn't help us, we have traveled up and down the coast of Maine and across Massachusetts but still nothing but a hint. Maybe New York will show off for us. Timing is everything.

Aug 26, 2014 - Making Tracks West

We were in four states today, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and finally, New York. It was not a day for photo ops; we stopped often enough to stretch but kept moving. The sites at Arrowhead Marine & RV Park are laid out as the spokes of a circle, which is interesting and works well, with all the hookups fairly centralized. It’s on a river, shady, grassy, and buggy (a constant this season). Joe fixed the gas water heater (spider webs or bugs are frequent cloggers of the supply line) and replaced two light bulbs, adjusting a...

Jul 20, 2013 - This is a fishy story

We weren’t sure of our next destination as Rich wanted to do some fishing, so we finally found a Coast to Coast campground just west of Albany – actually in Schenectady, NY. Coast to Coast hasn’t always been kind to us so believe me I had no expectations, but I have been pleasantly surprised. We are on a mountain; the park is well maintained with stocked ponds that require no fishing license, and very nice park staff. Oh, yes…the restrooms get a 10+ so I’m happy. We had a bit of an adventure getting here though, relying mostly on the GPS to...

Summer 2013 Stories

Jul 16, 2011 - Schenectady, N. Y.

A short drive to Schenectady, NY. We drove beside small lakes and the Erie Canal. Not much here to see so will only spend one night here. This is a blue collar town but the campground is nice. Another family type with a small lake and lots of things for the kids. We are backed up to a huge play field. Parked next to another HHII from OK. Bill

Steele summer 2011

Jul 9, 2011 - Hampton Beach 2011

We finally got all the crops planted and sprayed. This morning we started our trip to Hampton Beach. We had decided to make the border crossing at Queenston/Lewiston at Niagara Falls. As we approached Niagara they had warnings signs of a two hour delay at the Queenston bridge. Not wanting to be stopped for several hours, we decided to continue to Fort Erie and make the crossing there. We were still delayed about an hour, but cleared customs and headed east along I90 toward Albany. It cost us $45.00 in tolls to get to Albany, but was an...

Jul 9, 2009 - Highland Falls to Schenectady, NY

We got an early start for once and arrived at West Point a bit after 9 a.m. We caught a one-hour tour at 9:45. It was a little pricey -- $42 – but it was great. We hopped on a school bus and our tour guide told us all about the history of the campus. We stopped at the largest cathedral, drove past all of the professors’ houses, then got out again in front of the dorms and mess hall. Although it’s summer and regular classes aren’t in session, the cadets get very little time off. They spend this time in combat training. We saw cadets and a...
